This is the version that should have been the hit. And the guitar solo shows how good Glen really was in his prime. Wish the director had shown us more of him playing that. Thank you for posting this video.
I think it is appropriate that Jimmy Webb has returned to his Christian faith. I've never been sure that there is a God, but if there is, Jimmy Webb was so blessed with such enormous talent, that it is only appropriate that he should be thankful. When I think of the life he has had, the music he has written and the untold hours of joy his music has brought to so many millions of us, it just stuns me. Thank you Jimmy and thank you Glen, and God bless both of you. (Just covering my bases here.)
Amen to melody!!! Recording technology has never been so good as it is today but the level of crap coming out today has never been so low. A serious imbalance propelled by today's pop-culture dribble. I can only hope the pendulum will swing the other way one day and popular music will again have some artistic merit and substance.
A classic that I love. Hope he does this one on his "Good Bye Tour" when they come to Philadelphia, PA on September 15th. Google Perelamn Quadrangle for more information.
Jimmy Webb wrote Macarthur Park I watched this Glen Campbell special years ago a truly magical moment in t.v. I was a seventies teen. Loved Richard Harris on the hit but yes Glen takes this to another level. His voice was and always will be timeless
@debdireen4 I'll post here with yours. Yes, indeed deb, the man is timeless. Such a soulful voice and the guitar technique is fantastic. I hear that Glenn is not well these days. God bless the man, he has provided a great body of work and was a major star. By the time I get to Phoenix, Witchita Lineman, the best!
It is Jimmy Webb conducting, he also plays piano on other songs in this concert which was recorded at the Royal Festival Hall in London, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. I have the concert on video, and it is brilliant. This has to be one of the best live versions of Macarthur Park, and it's easy to see why Glen Campbell is considered the definitive interpreter of Jimmy Webb's fabulous songs.
thank you for this video, must of been one i missed in my younger days. liked glen campbell, didn't know he had a version of the song. sounds like they used the original score of the song. it is great. thank you
Accolades, justifiably so, have been bestowed upon Jimmy Webb for years. Webb is an amazing and truly gifted songwriter. On the other hand, Glen Campbell, though very popular, has never been fully recognized for his contributions as one of the best singers and interpreters of song. In addition to being one of the greatest voices around, he's one hell of a guitar player. There is nothing finer than Campbell paired with a Jimmy Webb tune. Arguably, nobody does Webb better than GC.
McArthur Park ~ Glenn got the lyric right, (unlike Richard who was english and kept singing about McArthur's Park where ever that is). Love the song and the 70s presentation. Not sure about the "striped pair of pants" lyrics, but I guess it fits in with anquish about a lost cake recipe.
@SuperNevile Hello :) I think the "striped pair of pants" lyric is misunderstood because its context is misunderstood. Its function is symmetrical to the "old man playing checkers" line - each of the first two verses begins with a stanza about the love affair, then turns to a digression about something unrelated - as if the speaker becomes distracted by something that's completely pointless... perhaps a reflection of why the relationship failed.
@stevevandien If you're looking for a haircut to hate, how about the babushka do and/or the weed whacker do, or the worst of the worst, the weed-whacker babushka dos that the gals are sporting these days.
This is an amazing performance of a great song! I first was attracted to MacArthur Park, the song, by the fabulous recording by Donna Summer (yes, she did record the bridge. It's on the full version of the song, not the edited for radio mix). Then I discovered Richard Harris version, now Glen Campbell...Jimmy Webb's song is just amazing to listen to. And I'm glad so many people have recorded this great songs in so many different ways! A true credit to Webb!
I heard that when Jimmy Webb wrote this song, he was walking in Macarthurs Park in the winter. He had lost someone he cared deeply about, perhaps a girl friend and as he was walking, he noticed that someone made a birthday cake out of the snow and it was raining... Therefore, Macarthurs Park is melting in the rain... Someone left my cake out in the rain... etc., etc..
A wionderful version of MacArthur Park, equal to the Richard Harris version, much better than a few versions I've enountered on YouTube, far better than a few more.
A wionderful version of MacArthur Park, equal to the Richard Harris version, much better than a few versions I've enountered on YouTube, far better than a few more.
Glen's voice is perfect for this, and all Jimmy Webb songs - after all, original singer Richard Harris was an actor, though a great one at that. I've left my cake out in the rain a few times since I first heard this, ha ha. Always found the recipe again, not sure about this time round ... The original hit arrangement beats this, it was groundbreaking 'orchestral rock' at the time ('68). Glenn's guitar solo doesn't work here, despite his chops.
Masterpiece of a song and I don't think I've ever heard a version of it I didn't like. Hard to choose the best...all the best singers seem to have done it. Great classic.
@MrJohnlord27 No, I don't agree sir. I think this song is a guy's song if you will - and best sung by one. Richard Harris is probably definitive, but would love to hear the Jerry Vale version. Didn't Vic Damone also sing this?
So they should it's either the London or Royal Philarmonic conducted by Jimmy Webb (who wrote & composed it, he also coached Richard Harris on the original recording)
The best version of this song, in my opinion, is by Jerry Vale. He has such a powerful voice and the song's ending is unbelievable. Unfortunately, there is no video, but the song can be purchased on Amazon.
Campbell is a musician's musician, and a songwriter's singer. Everything he does is in the service of the song. A wonderful, wonderful interpretation!
Like Tony had predicted in his song *The Music Has Died* - what's played on the radio now are either Hispanic or hip hop/rap along the Bay to Lalaland corridor.
Techno? Way to play favourites. How many Techno songs do you actually know. Rap? Isn't that like saying death to singing. It's a way of vocalisation not a genre. Hip hop? Well you already said death to rap so hip hop just becomes crooner without the singing. Pointless.
Also, all those genres suck on the radio. Look underground for the good stuff.
@boogiefever1985 For crimineys sake. Todays music is just as valid. This song is great, for sure, but this comment just displays a complete close mindedness that I'm so tired of seeing on videos of cool songs. If you don't like it that's cool but don't go dribbling shit out the corner of your mouth because you can't be bothered to turn off the fucking radio. I'm going to listen to some Kanye West now just to spite you.
@darthkrueger If you read my comment properly you would have seen that I did not say that ALL music today was terrible. I also never said that ALL hip hop, or ALL rap was bad. I was talking about SOULLESS music and so-called POPULAR music. There are lots of good songs and artists out there at the moment, it is just that the music industry does not promote them very well. Btw, if somebody has a different opinion to you doesn't mean you should insult them. Attack the argument not the person.
It is the same arrangement that he sang on the Boston Pops back in the 1970s. I have been searching for this version for over 30 years..it is an excellent rendition of a classic.
He is playing an Ovation Bluebird electric 6-string. These (about 8 in all, including the 12-strings) were built exclusively for him in the late 70's. You can see some clips of the 12-string versions on Youtube as well.

NIce performance, Glen is in my top ten favorites. However, his "high note" isn't that high, since he starts the song out in a pretty low register. I sing Baritone, and I can hit that note clean. Richard Harris mangles his high note, but it's a much, much higher note.
"I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it" - Jimmy Webb should rewrite that lyric and add new CGI effects with surround sound.
Well, what I ment was Donna Summer left out the heart of the song and only sang the choras which leaves no meaning to the song in her disco version. And I have never herd the 18 minute suite, maybe im missing something.

WHISPERS? That LOUD-MOUTHED DRUNKEN IRISHMAN? ;) Webb himself says Harris's version is his favorite. No question, though, Campbell has a far better voice.
