Privachi, a privacy-centric social network, is an attempt at giving users a choice to protect and own their social data. On Privachi, updates that users post are “locked” in such a way that even Privachi can’t unlock it; only the user’s friends can. The goal is to prevent any one service from knowing everything about the user. Hope this helps users protect themselves from social profiling.
there's also geotags, name tags, dates and other stuff that gets automatically stored in photos when they are taken. Even Facebook recommends that you remove it in their privacy policy (sec 2, last sentance). I use a free app for my iPhone called Pixelgarde Photo Privacy Editor, which works for me. I like that it's free. They have other applications for PC and Android too.
I think everyone should be careful in sharing their personal informations in setting up their profiles in any Social Networking sites. This is one of the disadvantages we may get in social media, anyone can use your identity by simply creating fake accounts to use it in whatever reason. There are as many gains that come with social media and it is undeniable. But what many forget is the negative side, the disadvantages. PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY. :)

Something we should all consider about social networking websites. How private is our information? What information is gathered in social networking websites about us? How can information about us be used for or against us in the future?
It's all over. Google has developed cars that drive themselves by measuring everything around the car within 230 feet down to 1 centimeter. For now the information is used to help the car navigate. It's takes only a small leap of imagination to see that in 20 years every car will measure everything down to an atomic level governments will be recording all of it. Don't believe me?
Google:
"Guided by Computers and Sensors, a Smooth Ride at 60 Miles Per Hour"
The 19-year-old Zuckerberg said, “Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard just ask. I have over 4,000 e-mails, pictures, addresses, SNS.” The unknown friend asked, “What? How’d you manage that?” Zuckerberg responded, “People just submitted it. I don’t know why. They “trust me.” Dumb f**cks.”

not helping ... other people give your email address to social sites and these create your (maybe not complete) social network without you knowing it. they even try to suggest mutual friends. and people post images of parties you've been to and they tag you as well. so "not signing up" is helping :).
what really help is isolating yourself/changing friend/hang with people over 85 who don't use internet at all
The best new social network where the users market, search, and share news, blogs, feeds, music, videos, websites, and events. Search for "TheMusicAge" on Google.
I recommend folks watch, "Taking Liberties" its available online & an excellent example of how the US is strongarming compliance of foreign nationals & governments to cough up privacy freedoms.
I also recommend "The Jeff Farias Show" which covers these issues regularly. HIs show is also free, online & features podcasts of fantastic interviews with leading researchers & activists.
I was a victim of he CIA MKUltra brainwashing experiments in the 1950's i sued the CIA then the Cdn Gov't and in 2007 I found outthat the Canadian security intelligence service have me in there subversive group bank(s) for no legeimate reason unless suing the CIA put's you there this is not a legetimate reason I appealed to the Privacy Commissioner in july 2007 and still don't have a response. I have the first part of my video up you can find in under Ravenscrag
I don't understand why the Privacy Commissioner takes forever to process a complaint. If it is because of short staffing then hire more people I submitted a complaint in august 2007 (thats a long time) 17 months still no response
Seems to me a precursor to a national identity card... I can just imagine some time in the future once ID-cards are forced upon people a question on users facebook profiles "Would you like to import your ID card data into facebook? connect with friends...FREE, win a chicken!"
Yesterday I say the first ad saying the national ID cards in my state will be manditory after june 2009. Its no longer a conspiracy theory.....its already happened. pretty sad :(

Wow, this is disturbing. And I just came across this video while searching to see if anyone from my family was on here T_T my dad broke off all contact with them years ago. The Stoddart family... He had four sisters (I think!)... I know this is useless, but it would be great to get back in touch with my cousins, or aunts, or even my grandparents on her side.
I never heard of this organization until I saw this video, I am comforted by its existence.
I actually work on a project related to data mining consumer and web services. It's scary what can be done. But, web services don't have to be vilified, there are ways to manage personal information and advertising needs without infringing on users rights and expectations. This is a topic everyone really should learn more about.
The video provides an insight into a much wider topic of depleting individual privacy. Its not just social network sites that process our data. Look at others like our credit card companies(they know our shopping patterns), loyalty cards or grocery store cards(they know how much of what you consume every week), banks, email service providers, Google (it knows your browsing/searching patterns), ebay, amazon, paid digital tv channels. All of them earn something by analysing our patterns.
Interesting to see an institution I think of as 'square' (Canadian privacy regulators) getting into the viral video marketing game. I don't agree with all of the claims made in this video but it's making some of the right points...
after i watched this video, my insight is very open because the video is very good to give information Privacy and Social Networks

It's not nice to protect your tweets after you follow somebody on twitter!
Your entitled to your privacy. But from the other end it feels like two people whispering in each-others ears right in front of you
If you don't like the person? Have the common decency to either block or unfollow them. Not shut them out for no reason!
