this version of My Favorite Things is my favorite song of all time, bar none. It has been ever since I heard it two years ago. Mesmerizing, heavenly, sad, happy, all at the same time. Makes you feel everything at once, like music should...
@Kasseur2fass & @Easleytee Seriously, give me a break you obnoxious pricks - implying someone is less intelligent because they prefer Mehldau to Tyner? Please, regale us on how that sip of wine harkens to black currants and Edam cheese. No, on second thought, the next time you feel like pontificating from on high about an art as subjective as jazz, spare us the sniveling - nobody digs it, it doesn't make you cool, get fucked.
@Kasseur2fass You can't really say one version is better than the other. They have such a different feel. Turner's version is much more aggressive while Mehldau's version is more soft and contemplative. They are both very unique in their own way.
Finally a blogger who has the intelligence and discernible sensibility to recognize the artistic difference between what Mehldau has failed to do with this tune compared to the legendary MT.
@Easleytee Well... Have you ever heard in your universe about CLASSICAL music? Or to? So, Mr. Musician (M is capital, your Majesty), Brad Mehldau has the most Chopinish and Scribinesque sound you've ever heard, and still, it's JAZZ. The man is a genius, he CREATES atmosphere like so little other jazz pianist, and (if you've ever dared to play the piano) IMPROVISATION!!!! FOR HEAVEN'S SHAKE, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT???
@Kasseur2fass first off Tyner played it with the quintet so there is NO comparing. second, kenny g is elevator music, or orchestrations of beatle or steely dan tunes. 3rd, it does him a while to get thru the george winston
soundalike section so you re partially right, sounds like he's doing a musical nod-off, compared to his solo opening on "alone together" (which i think, tyner could never match), 4th there is a much better, much more complex live version of this floating around somewhere.
when i heard this on mary poppins or the sound of music or whatever the heck movie it's in i thought it was kind of trite. Then Brad Mehldau got a hold of it...
@StanleyDonwood Perhaps he made it on prupose? It is a good tool if used correctly and not always. Like those 2 seconds. It gives the solo a nice and modern sound. But don't look for something wrong, for details and mistakes....enjoy the whole, the complex, the beautyful harmony that every note creates....even if it is "slightly out of tune"...
oh yea, and 5 people are not only deaf, but they're blind, dumb and lame. I feel so bad for those 5 peoplle. I'm sure they've all killed themselves by now...
@tpstrat14 I don't know why you feel the need to say such things while listening to such a wonderfull music. It's strange....These 5 people have perfectly good right to have their own likes and dislikes, haven't they? Actually your comment sounds dumb and lame to me, but it doesn't change the way that song sounds in my heart, see what I mean?
@expiculimagister nah, you don't go out of your way to listen to this song, and then go out of your way to "dislike" it if you don't have serious mental problems. You're a troll and you know it.
@tpstrat14 I'm just pissed off by the ever growing army of assholes who made every single music video on youtube contain a "XX justin bieber fans watched this/ XX people should kill themselves" type of comment. I find it useless and annoying, specially on awesome videos like this one. Anyway, I'm not much into arguing on internet, so no hard feelings an I'll keep my mouth shut from now on
@tpstrat14 --...those 5(now 6) were sooo effected by the song, that they didn't like what they were feeling. They pressed 'dislike' because of the PAIN!! Good music is supposed to make FEEL something. Oh well......
@63weezer I don't usually complain about dislikers, but this one is ridiculous. I don't understand how anyone could dislike this. Maybe someone that had something personal against Mehldau? Maybe someone who was expecting a video and then heard that french dude addressing a picture of Brad? No one could possibly listen to any good amount of this song and dislike it. I know people have their opinions, but come on...
@63weezer --[through my hands up to surrender]..."NO!!...it's not ME!!" I guess my earlier post was a bad joke. I am not one of those 5/6 dislikes-far from it! This interpretation was not only inventive, but smooth with style. The intro transported me to a sunny day when I was a teen...trying to figure out a way to kiss this girl. After I kissed her she said, "What took you so long?"....a favorite memory! :)
@63weezer I thank you for your note of the sunny day when you were a teen, and that girl's cute response ... memory, reminiscensce, recollection, remembrance, for others, the present times, ... I don't know which is the better word to define it, but it was a beautiful image, and a feeling which many, I guess, can share. :) - By the way: Mehldau's version of MFT is outstanding.
Great musician really, but several years ago I read one of his interviews in a Downbeat magazine and was very disappointed by his attitude towards Bill Evans.
''I don't quite understand why he's put on a pedestal... I'm not even crazy about his playing...''
When I read these words I couldn't believe my eyes.
Mehldau is great, but by putting down Bill Evans he did bad not to Bill Evans, but to himself.
Again, he's great, but I'm not among his fans anymore... sorry
I'm a huge fan of Bill Evans as well(Blue in Green is my favourite piece of music - out of all I've ever heard), but that Mehldau doesn't appreciate Evans is no reason not to like Mehldau.
@Ramaz1969 hmm yea that's no good. You can tell more about a person by what they say about others than what others say about him. But what I feel about this song doesn't change. This isn't even Brad Mehldau's music to me. Whatever flaws he has I don't care. This song is still absolute heavenly bliss beyond compare.
God, I feel like Brad just...mailed this....to my soul...Like I just downloaded pure love...like jesus gave me a back massage...this is one of my favorite things! LAWLZ! <3

dunno if you already heard it but FINALLY this masterpiece will be released: Live in Mariac 2 CD + DVD [track 2.05. "My favorite things" Rodgers/Hammerstein], can't wait till January 18, 2011! thank you thank you thank you Brad.
totally addicted, just can't stop listening to this masterpiece since yesterday... lying in my bed and pushing "replay", again and again and again. need to wake up from this hypnosis...No, not yet. Replay.
@pmsmorga i did the same thing a year ago when i first found this song. it is truly magical. that's all i can say about it. no other words will suffice.
@pmsmorga Im addicted too to this masterpiece. It will be released with the full Marciac concert on DVD in the UK on the 22nd February 2011 under the title " Brad Mehldau live in Marciac"
Every comment hear seems to be similar. An entrancing masterpiece of heart and soul for the ages. This rendition of My Favorite Things will live on forever and ever. It hasn't been properly recognized yet, but give it time. A truly GENIUS masterpiece...
@pmsmorga Excelent comment. No need to say that the Brad's recreation of the masterpiece of Coltrane is better than the original, in my not humble opinioin.
I don't mean to piss on anybody's parade here, but for large parts of this Mehldau's timing seems off. This kind of hypnotic ostinato is very fragile when it comes to this kind of inaccuracy. At least to my ears.
@Superphilipp I think it's part of his style/interpretation. If you listen to his version of "River Man" by Nick Drake, he does a similar thing. Part of his genius is that his left hand is like a metronome whilst his right hand has an incredible rubato. It sounds very free to me
You're right, Brad Mehldau is a rare and precious genius. Of course there's Brubeck here...he was a great teacher and influenced all piansts who had ears. so did keith and evans. brad takes it all to the next level. keith's trio work can get boring where brad takes a simple tune as such or "things behind the sun" and creates a new universe. god bless him. need this issued on a CD asap! please, brad ! ! !
@Paradiseforeverlost there's no price to put on this kind of ecstasy. i sure hope brad is a billionaire JUST for this one performance. truly priceless art here.
brad melted this beautiful song into my heart from the first time i heard it 2 months ago. now i come to this page from time to time to remind myself just how important my favorite things are to me. way to make a classic into an complete masterpiece, brad.
The way Mehldau starts really makes you shift to the tip of your chair, but then ... it just doesn't take off. It's definitely no contest, but Brubecks 's the word on this one. Don't take it personal Brad, you just can't have e'm all:-)
PEOPLE, please listen to jon schmidt and confirm that his compositions are SHIT compared to this!!! i mean, some people even make comments like "jon schmidt is a better composer than mozart".... AHHHHHH PLEASE SHOOT ME NOW!!!
I think Paul Smith is better than Gruisin, Guaraldi, Winston, and pretty much every well known pianist (besides classical). No pianist deserves more views than Paul Smith...I imagine all pianists would be the first to agree. (Check out Paul's "Fly me to the Moon" on youtube) But I think this injustice can be acknowledged without needlessly punishing Guaraldi, Winston, and Gruisin.
I went to go listen to Jon Schmidt because of this post. He really sucks. I guess that would be cool if you listened to it at youth group every night, but that sucked. He sucks. Brad is good. Does not suck. Jon sucks.
i'm responsible for nearly 1% of those 31479 views. mehldau is the albert einstein/steven hocking/alfred nobel/thomas edison etc etc.. of piano. (he's a genius)

@ivanhorvath unacceptable, everybody knows Thom Yorke is god.... but really, no

@ivanhorvath Yeah, he's got a nice tone, but we're really not in the top 20 or even 50 I don't think.

which arrangement is this? i wanna find the actual music for it!!!
kyrakiwiblair 1 year ago
@kyrakiwiblair Mehldau writes his own arrangements. I very much doubt there's sheet music available for it.

@MrTr0y in my opinion, if you can't learn this by ear, then you don't deserve to play it

@iaincounsel69 Thanks for the info.

Still, it's a beautiful interpretation.
Superphilipp 1 year ago
@Superphilipp syncopation I believe!
1klavierspieler 1 year ago
@Superphilipp I think it's part of his style/interpretation. If you listen to his version of "River Man" by Nick Drake, he does a similar thing. Part of his genius is that his left hand is like a metronome whilst his right hand has an incredible rubato. It sounds very free to me
willywoo112 1 year ago 2
@Superphilipp
Mehldau does these floating lines/comping all the time. If the trio were behind him you'd hear that he has perfect time.

brad melted this beautiful song into my heart from the first time i heard it 2 months ago. now i come to this page from time to time to remind myself just how important my favorite things are to me. way to make a classic into an complete masterpiece, brad.
tpstrat14 1 year ago 12
you must be kidding! Brubeck is a nice player, but lacks the total renewing power of Mehldau. What a genius!
tamaar85 1 year ago
The way Mehldau starts really makes you shift to the tip of your chair, but then ... it just doesn't take off. It's definitely no contest, but Brubecks 's the word on this one. Don't take it personal Brad, you just can't have e'm all:-)

@tpstrat14 Tim.
I think Paul Smith is better than Gruisin, Guaraldi, Winston, and pretty much every well known pianist (besides classical). No pianist deserves more views than Paul Smith...I imagine all pianists would be the first to agree. (Check out Paul's "Fly me to the Moon" on youtube) But I think this injustice can be acknowledged without needlessly punishing Guaraldi, Winston, and Gruisin.
carlosian2 1 year ago
I went to go listen to Jon Schmidt because of this post. He really sucks. I guess that would be cool if you listened to it at youth group every night, but that sucked. He sucks. Brad is good. Does not suck. Jon sucks.

i'm responsible for nearly 1% of those 31479 views. mehldau is the albert einstein/steven hocking/alfred nobel/thomas edison etc etc.. of piano. (he's a genius)
