  • This is footage from AE's first world flight attenpt in March 1937. It shows preparations & takeoff from Oakland, CA. The shots at beginning & end are of AE & navigator Fred Noonan returning to California aboard the steamer Malolo after she had groundlooped & crashed her Lockheed Electra 10E during takeoff at Luke Flield airport, Honolulu, thereby ending the first attempt. It's unsurprising that she looks tired & stressed, considering that her poor piloting skills probably caused the crash.

  • My guess would be that her plane had a really heavy fuel load, considering the flight she was about to perform. (This may have been her first round-the-world attempt, in which she flew west to Hawaii.) It looks like she may have "rotated" (pulled back on the yoke) a little early, before she had built up quite enough airspeed to climb safely, and then held it level a little while longer so she could get more airspeed for a proper climb.

  • She looked very stressed in this video... very sad ending for this woman who was very important. All the good people... cliche.

  • no, she just looks really tired

  • IMO, looking really tired and stressed are the same thing. =?

  • no way! :P

  • weird dive at the takeoff xD

  • Is it possible that she knew the camera was watching her and decided not to take off steeply to give the camera man a chance for a good shot?

  • maybe, but i doubt it.. Making a dive at the takeoff, is that a good shot? I would say it's just a weird shot.. and i doubt people back then cared what an aircraft did on takeoff, so it probably wasn't special at all :D

  • Great! Wered you get thsi from?
