  • Gosh...no wonder cost few hundred bucks ><

  • Fantastic! This video gives me even more of a great appreciation for my lenses.

  • 1:08 those are dirty nails..

  • @mhelvaROCKZ cuz the procedure it's rough.

  • no speak eanglesh

  • damn, pc monitor can't describe how perfect those lens are

  • very complex work

  • i always think lens cost sucks... but i just realized that those were actually coming cheap ... great technology, great inventions hats off ...

  • No wonder, I'll stop complaining now.

  • check this out /watch?v=06t8TGAffNA it is a lens that can focus every thing at once.

  • i like the part when they was doing the stuff with the things

  • Fuck lenses all i need is a glass and a camera

  • Wierd how they don't wear hair nets?

  • this is weird

  • i wonder how cheap photograpy lenses are made

  • that was amazing !!!

  • oh guys, the technical process hasn't changed dramatically since years, and these are TV lenses, if what.

  • ...

  • OMG... I never knew it would take 6 weeks to finish a 27mm lens...

  • when was this video made?

  • hahahahah its not like that its made guys lol are we still in 1960 ?? its just lika a traditional way here

  • The lettering onto the lens casing was awesome, I thought.

  • Here's a more updated video series of how elite lenses are made:

    Canon 500mm L series

    watch?v=MKNFW0YwDYw&feature=related

  • This video is ancient. I'm sure this is no longer the way modern lenses are produced. They must have introduced robotized production lines and high grade clean rooms. We hardly -if ever - see modern day manufacturing technologies, since these are all patented and company secrets.

I'd surely like to see a more recent flic :-)

  • @dronden2 watch?v=MKNFW0YwDYw&feature=related

  • Anyone know the name of this track?

  • That is a complicated way to make a sandwich.

  • Now I really know where's the cleanest place on the planet.... inside a factory that makes camera lenses... :D

  • thats why its my favourite channel :D

  • 1000 dollars for a kg for optical glass. damn!!!!

  • dude she has a condom on her thumblol

  • @HABITMEDIA i thought the same thing

  • its not done like this in these days :D

  • the reason why there is no autofocus demo in this video is beacause they are rangefinder lenses which are manual focus onley

  • that looks like a rangefinder lens

  • 6 weeks for 1 optical lens.....this is just amazing.....

  • 7:15 *FACEPALM* F-Stop is the technical term for aperture - in other words; it's the same thing.

  • who is this jml optical, cos a 27mm 1.4 lens would be awesome. id like to know what changes the f-stop number on a lens

  • thumbs up if you forced yourself to watch the entire thing without falling asleep

  • 6:35 California Raisin!!!

  • The music was dope in the first song.. i don't know about you guys lol

  • I like these finger condoms :))) ..vry nice vid :D ...

  • what about those focus? how does lens autofocus on a subject

  • I'm so curious to know who had the courage, brains and steady hand to devise this

invention. Paying the hefty price tag isn't so terrible after all in my humble opinion. Discovery Channel, keep being curious your programs are great! I'd improve this video by discussing some of the jargon that's related to lens components. Example: Why do marketing departments inside lens makers tout just how many elements are used to make the lens. What's it all for.

  • how beautiful they are

  • Hahaha no wonder they are SOOOO pricey

  • The lenses are soooo prettttttyyyyyyyy :)

  • wow this is cool!

  • 31 dislikes...:( i dont know y...!!!!

  • Awesome. Thanks for posting this.

  • I'm surprised they don't wear a mask of something like a salad bar sneeze guard.

  • nice!!!

  • watch?v=Am5wJUEiNAI = exact same presentation except with a male voice, and a little extra information up front. What gives? I highly doubt it take 6 weeks to make a lens anymore and I bet the process is mostly automated now.

  • no wonder lenses are expensive

  • DISCOVERY CHANNEL FTW !!! <3

  • pitch you better not screw up my lens!

  • 8:36 finger condoms :-D

  • @maulbear hahahahahaha XD

  • i wanna bash the music soo bad. its annoying!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow! Six weeks!?

  • @milackk7 I don't believe the information is accurate in this video any longer as it looks really old. I bet lens creation is mostly automated these days and is much, much quicker than 6 weeks.

  • Wow!

  • i really appreciate lens's and the cost of them now because of this video

  • I have NEVER heard of JML !

  • 27 f/1.4? that would be awesome.

  • Inferior lenses.

    NIKKOR > ALL

  • wait, if most lenses are made in japan why is there a white guy at 2:35?

  • that is insane!

  • what if the guy doing the words on the barrel makes a spelling mistake?

  • the background music makes me want to RAPE young puppies.

  • @CEEPMDEE well theres something wrong with you then its just music

  • this was like 6 centuries ago....

  • Interesting clip, I was recently reading about something similar on thephotographyclinic (.) com

  • when was this? 1921?

  • I hope all those workers do the job properly when its a Friday afternoon!

  • @Diamondblade2008 When Casual Friday the woman dealing with the lenses gets to wear a different coloured glove on each finger :-P

  • Cool

  • no wonder y they so expensive!! damnn!!

  • seriously? that is how it's made? no laser measurement and robots to sort out imperfect lenses by the masses?

  • @CasualMaggot

The levels of tolerance are so emmense, my Dad worked as a consultant for Opteka looking for different componants, known for their low quality lenses (reletively), and even there the tolerance for inferior lens is great, if its out by on some fisheye, or wideangle have to be very precise.

  • How old is this video? So many of this can be automised....and using dustfree rooms and robotic arms should also help I'm sure.

  • cool!...

now, since i know how its made, i can finally make my own lenses :D

    thx

  • man but that was a ghetto lens, I wanna see how Nikon and Canon do their shit!

  • how its made people

  • I sew your new super nice behind the scene movie:

    youtube.com/watch?v=ux5oAksAcPM

  • Just one flec could ruin this entire assembly.

  • OMG 6 weeks !!!!!!!!!

  • What I want to know/ see is how Zeiss and Leica made their lenses back in the 40's - 60's.

  • ah no wonder that they,re sooo expansive cuzz they,re difficuilt to make and takes 6 weeks, i,ve heard that those lenses could cost over 30,000 dollars.

  • Japan had perfected semi-automated lensmaking

thats why Carl Zeiss lenses[of today] are made in Japan despite Japans high labor cost

  • how is it so expensive if the could sell them for like 400 us dollars

  • Those gloves would sure keep the hands from getting too sweaty- but I'd be embarrassed to wear them at work.

  • SIX WEEKS to make ONE lens? Its any wonder they cost so much!!!

  • are you kidding me? 6 weeks to make one lense?are you serious?

  • is this to show why we have to pay shit tons for a decent lens?

  • Its tedious work....

  • around 8:00 she has asian size condoms around her fingers haha!

  • Great video, thanks

  • Is she using condoms on her fingers?! 5:47

  • And one camera has around 20 lenses... Poor chinese people

  • they could make those lenses in a day...

  • This was very interesting! Good info!

  • hey i know an eassier, why not just buy your camera from best buy

  • her pwns sux

  • Cool!

  • why use old people to do it....lenses would be 10 times cheaper if they'd used slaves.....uhm i mean young people....

  • @raymhensley hehe, i think this is from the old days :P

  • on 5.05 the worker left the lens in an inapropiate position. lenses must be placed with the concave side down, in other ways you can scratch it

  • making a lens this way seems way too weird....we should get Mythbusters to look into this ;)

  • @no288 I once worked for bausch & lomb making eye glass lenses & can assure you its true except for maybe the 6 week part. I think that's more or less the time for rare lenses like a canon 500mm to 800mm L. Many of the steps they did here we did too & the glass or plastic was monitored throughout the entire process.

  • In all honesty there is no point in doing this at 2:00 - 2:28. It is just taken off again!

  • @JBICK666 It's just used to hold the lenses onto the blocking body

  • @JBICK666 you prefer to shape one lense at a time for hours on end? the pitch is there to hold it in place and to help shape multiple lenses at once

  • id love to see how a 70-200mm f/2.8 IF ED ish made lmfao

  • im glad my lenses have gone through such delicate work:)

  • i wish did this again only on a nikon 70-300mm VR or sumthing :L

  • "picture perfect" HOW IT'S MADE, MORE BAD PUNS PLEASE. hahahha

  • holy crap, and i thought it was just a peice of expensive glass.

  • thanks for the video . .

  • it all looks so primitive. i thought they would have had computer controlled robots doing it all by now.

  • @MustNotRead

Ok this comment is good, but also bad at the same time. Every single lense has to be made with special specs. If robots made them, they would all be the same. That is why they need to make every single one specially.

  • @MustNotRead that's why they cost so much.

  • @MustNotRead don't make general assumptions, those are not your usual Nikon or Canon lens, when you need 100 to make the cost of an automated production line is likely not justfied

  • goo!!!!!!!!!!!d video D

  • Wow .. very nice .... that's a really hard work by checking every glass etc ......

    nice

  • Perfecto

  • wow

  • optical cement?

i wonder how they stop dust particles sticking to that

  • Probably by assembling the pieces in a 'clean room'.

  • fucking nice

  • nice

  • but how do they get the lens out of the pitch? D:

  • @randomviewer896 Exactly......I'm now not happy with this video. I WANNA KNOW!

  • @randomviewer896 heat and a solvent like acetone...yes i know you answer 4 months ago :P

  • I thought they would be working in a clean room. No hair net? dead skin flakes? argh!

    Pretty laborous.

    Galileo would be astounded.

  • very nice!!!

  • wow, they take good care of our lenses

  • wow.. what a work!

  • What a fascinating video

  • Cool!

  • HIM is useful for DT coursework jajajaja

  • now i understand , why camera lenses are so costly

  • Fascinating!

  • JML! That's a custom lens manufacturer... they have some nice glass.

How It's Made is def an awesome show.

  • "$1000 per kilogram"

thats only for like ED, N, or flourite lenses.

  • no, Nano crystal is only an on the glass Coat.

  • the music in the background iS ANNOYING.!

  • @kallesmamm

    dude i love that music

  • @kallesmamm Are you retarded?

  • @kallesmamm The music is beautiful,it makes me cry muchly

  • i suddenly want a new camera

  • wooow look at all those shiney lenses

  • 4:52 finger condoms xD

  • HAHAAHA

    nice one

  • Criminy! 6 weeks....okay..won;t feel so bad going to the Canon store now..sheesh!

  • Geez! No wonder good lenses cost so much!

  • Comment removed

  • These lenses do look quite old compared to some of the newer Nikon and Canon lens designs. This must have been recorded quite some time ago!

  • soooo much manual labour

  • Lets hope none of those technicians have dandruff!

  • yeap i saw some dust

  • i love film and photography so i thoroughly enjoyed this video and learnt alot thanks so much ;-)

  • And yet all lenses, new, used, whatever, typically have dust in the optics that doesn't effect the image.

  • Comment removed

  • I suspect if the particles were large enough they would affect the image?

  • jesus there's got to be a better way
