i believe the saying that your best doesnt make you your worst doesnt break you but the alnum afterthe best/worst album is what creates you and with that being said i think stillmatic is the best album
@disipha the unmentioned ones were hot 2, I didn't mention them bcuz I thought it was obvious. Nas has continued to adapt & evolve through out his career.
@disipha the unmentioned tracks from it was written were fire too I didn't feel the need 2 mention them bcuz I thought it was obvious. RD was waaaayy better than the black album, Not commercially but lyrically. "can I live" & "dead presidents" r 2 examples of lyrical slaughters. Eminems album the Recovery is considered 2 b his worst
List of mcees NAS album "Illmatic influenced" eminem jay-z jada kiss sheik looch fat joe cannubis royce the 5'9 joell ortiz elzhi black thought mos def PR Terrorist raekwon these are some of the biggest names in rap...the proof is...dont believe me...go back and listen to anyone of them dudes pre-illmatic illmatic with just 9 songs...revolutionized rap
It's ridiculous to compare every Nas album 2 illmatic. No one makes a better album than their 1st. It's like asking Jay 2 make every album like Reasonable Doubt, impossible!! Each album represents a moment in time
@sagittariusarrow I think many artists have overcome their first album. I think Jay topped RD with Black Album and I think Em topped his first with his second two and recovery.
@disipha Tome, Infinite was fantastic, so was Eminem Show, SSLP, and MMLP. Recovery was his most complex and while not topping hi effors, he did a wonderful job with it
It was Written was a beast!! The message, I gave u power, take it in blood, street dreams, black girl lost, etc how could that only b 41/2? Those were some of the most lyrical songs ever
It Was Written was so ill.. It had a bit of every thing.. Criminal slang, intelligent rhymes yet still grimey enough for the streets.. Ofcourse the flawless distinctive style.. In my opinion a stepped-up version of illmatic. His best album in my opinion
my rating for all of Nas' albume 1 out of 5 rating Illmatic 5/5 It Was Written 4 & And a Half/5 I Am... 4/5 Nastradamus 3/5 Stillmatic 5/5 God Son 4/5 Streets Disciple 4 and a Half/5 Hip Hop Is Dead 4/5 Nigger 5/5 and lets not forget about The Lost Tapes 5/5
Imo this is what seperates Illmatic from all other rap cds....the progression of hip hop. At the time illmatic was released no one was droping multis and painting pictures so vivid. His flow on illmatic was damn near flawless. We may not appreciate it at this time but understand that in 93 94 no one was rhyming like this. Wu was gritty and biggie had that ill flow but the bars upon bars that nas put together was crazy.
Hmm Nas best album..it gotta be illmatic lyrically..plus it had the most impact. It was written is real close at second..almost as flawless as illmatic..then i would say the lost tapes third then Stillmatic..God's son is more personal and one of my favs too..I am was ok..we all Know Nastradamus was terrible..so was street's disciple..HHID was ok.Untitled was near perfect..couple songs shoulda been longer..but all in all Nas has a great catalouge of CD's he the best to me.he grew as an artist
I thought It Was Written was Nas' best album. I mean Nas showed on that album that he was more than just a raw lyricist. Great production, great guest appearances, and a more polished Nas as an artist. Illmatic is ill 'cause it's Nas as a hungry, raw lyricist. IWW is Nas' growth. That album was important for the revival of East Coast rap back. Production from greats like Premo, Dr. Dre, and Havoc. IWW was far from doo, like Jay suggested. But I don't sip the kool-aid.
1. Illmatic 2 . It was written ... in the order they were released . illmatic is definitely nas's best LP . as a matter of fact , best LP ever, next to the main ingredient , or the single troy ...and other classics .
First heard dude (Nas) on Live At BBQ in 1991 and was taken back by his flow. When I heard Halftime, I had automatically remembered his voice. I was astonished - on some real sh*t. I knew that if he would drop an album - it would be a big deal and I was right. Illmatic fit for the time it came out and the nature of things at that time. In my opinion, Nas has never came with anything that was as cohesive nor important as Illmatic.
i like Youre da Man and 2nd Childhoodfrom Stillmatic but i personally think all in all that Illmatic was his best album than close between Stillmatic and Untitled
Personally I prefer, "It Was Written". However my opinion is not valid, and most of ours isn't since our first impressions with illmatic/our first time hearing it, compared to our impression when listening to it now, is very different. After you've heard an album 100 times it gets old and loses a little bit of its persona (to yourself). Really the only way to really find out if it is his best album, is if we got a person with "fresh ears," someone who hasn't heard a nas album, or nas himself.
Honestly....I Think It Was Written Is Nas' Best Album To Date.....Its A Lyrical Masterpiece...Illmatic is a classic no doubt but It Was Written Is The Album That Got Me Into Nas
@tierryOnree I can co-sign 36 chambers...but that was a whole group of nine emcees...who are sick...well mostly. Liquid Swords is a classic but I disagree.
It is his best album. But it is limited in terms of subject matter- I think you have to be familiar with the streets of NY to really appreciate it. I dnt however feel it is his most lyrical- I mean he displayed more lyrical creativity on It was written (I gave you power) nd touched on more subjects on God's son n Untitled.
man nas is just sik,all his albums has gd beats, and gd stories, hes the best lyricist ever, the rest didnt last tht long, like biggie,rakim,2 pac had mad material, but lyrically nas is better,2pac just had the passion and power behing his words, but hands down, nas one of the best ever, and the best lyricist story teller ever.
it wasnt his hottest cd,but its still a classic, cuz he brung new style, new stories, new flo to the game, thts why alot of ppl say itshis best album, cuz he introduced the east side,to realness, and story telling,he brung tht bak 2 the eastcoast, but to me I Am is him best album, but once again, all his cds hot 2 me.
other than rakim & biggie i'd say Nas is the best lyricist of all time.
He hasn't really ever topped the sounds of Illmatic, that's when Nas was young, hungry & fresh. However, i do feel he has come close with the likes of it was written, hip-hop is dead & stillmatic.
I definitely agree that Illmatic was lyrically the best...but I think he has improved as an overall artist. I think the others are better albums in a cohesive sense but lyrically I cannot argue with you there.
Yes Illmatic was nas' best album why? Because of the albums top notch production and lyrics. Also the album was 10 songs deep which leaves little room for errors. Nas is my favorite mc but he isn't the best. Nas is to inconsistent and has a bad ear for beats. Half of nas' releases are wack for example I Am.. was average, qb's finest was wack, nastradamus was terrible, street's disciple was boring, and his next 2 albums after that were disappointments
@pieguy99. No way was hip hop is dead decent it felt like a boring lecture, i had to force myself to listen. Untitled was mediocre but my joints were queens get the money and the slave and the master. His beat selection is scary
@pieguy264 lyrically he was on point but the beats and song selection (Hero, makes the world go round). To me i didn't enjoy which is rare for me when i listen to esco
I mean i do alot of argueing with hiphop and i did listen to what u had to say but im not about ot say alot here just that illmatic is not only nas greatest album...its hip hops greatest album ever!
Illmatic sucked. Its beats were so fucking boring made me fall asleep.Nas is not real hip hop.Soulja boy is.Seriouly sit down and listen to Soulja boys crank that then this song. Its obvious that soulja boy got more talent
i dont like how you said it was written and streets deciple was due it was written was by far nas' best album the production more grimey the lyrics just deeer and more creative the story tellin great
Amazing video, really appreciated your thoughts on this. Pretty much agree with everything. However, I think It Was Written is pretty much on par with Illmatic but slightly not as good.
I think the production of the beats on Illmatic have a lot to do with just how amazing of an album it really is. If you listen to the beats on that album, then listen to pretty much every album after, the production style isn't at all the same, and I think one of Nas's weakest points has always been beat-selection. I think It Was Written has some of his best lyrics, just the beats kinda ruin it for me, but hey, thats just my opinion. Btw great videos man, i subscribed, much respect.
lol im so sorry dude i just finished watching the video now and you did in fact mention who killed it. im sorry it was ignorant of me to comment without finishing the video
Very nice video, except you didnt talk about the track "who killed it?" from Hip hop is dead, which i think was an AMAZING track, it was so clever and well thought out but most people have a hard time following along with the story
I take that back God's Son was nice. I don't completely not like Stillmatic its decent Stillbetter than the garbage that pollutes the radio these days, i just feel like everything he did for a while was kinda popish to me. Dont know if he was just tryna get out some contract music for Columbia or what.
I think Nas's best album is It Was Written. I also think alot of people sleep on God's Son. God's Son imo is rarely given the credit its deserved. I think you should also make a video talking about what the original I Am...Nastradamus double disc could of been, pre-release reviews were all good but it leaked. Could the album of been classic and better than Ready 2 Die? Nice vids though homie. I can hook you up with a link for the double disc
Ny state of mind is nice tho personally i feel It was written was his best top 5 all time Hip-Hop Classic. You got watch them niggas, street dreams and ruled the world of course and silent murder. And everything he put out between I Am and Hip Hop is Dead i gotta consider garbage homie..lol..
God's Son deserves more attention....
