The ball was indeed dead where he originally touched it, since you can't advance a punt, even if it's a muff, but he legally recovered the punt since he was the second person to touch it.

Not making 1st downs cause the 9ers 10 minutes in playtime and that was in part of the GREAT GIANTS DEFENSE
