  • I made my mother buy me this record in Omagh in Mc Sorleys record shop in Bridge street. I listen to it for hours and hours days and days. I was 12.

  • SHIRLEY BASSEY. NATALIE

  • Eurovision songs were so much better back in the 70s.

  • This is beautiful.

  • The chorus of this song has staye with me an a journey I ha with a when I was very young an we listened to the charts countdown - these lyrics means so much thank you for posting this - beautiful song

  • With compliments!

  • Didn't know there was an English version and it is as beautiful as the Italian. Definitely one of the best Eurovision entries.

  • This translation reached no 8 in the UK charts. Personally, I think it sounds better in Italian, and that version honourably finished second to Waterloo in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Nice video for a first effort, by the way, but you forgot the second verse lyrics!

  • @cbak12sg Fully agree. The Italian version just has that something extra.

  • BEATIFUL TUNE,I REMENBER THIS IN MY TIME IN TOTPS,ITS WAS A GREAT TUNE THEN,STILL IS NOW,,NOT TYPICAL EUROVISION NOW,,LOL,SOME GREAT DEEP THOUGHTFUL LYRICS,WHERE DID THE YEARS GO?!

  • I played this on my final legal Radio Broadcast, very emotive and beautiful song !!

  • BELLE interpretation de GIGLIOLA merci pour tout

  • I knew it, and had looked for it many times here. It´s been like 30 years since I last listened to it. Thanks for posting.

  • love this song, should of won in 1974 instead of abba !

  • @pugsy1234567

GET OVER IT!!! I cannot believe that some people still whine about Abba's well-deserved victory 35 years after the ESC in 1974. "Si" is a wonderful song but not as wonderful as "Waterloo"!

  • It's a great song , here in Brazil we love Gigliola

  • Oh my god. still makes me cry after all these years. what a sad but lovely song. thanks for posting.

  • Had it have been this version in 1974 it would have won hands down!

but I also love Abba, and of course Waterloo,

It's also shame that Mouth and Macneal were also on the same bill, alas!! two of them had to lose!

Such quality all in the same year!

  • gigliola te amooo , siempre tan linda y cantando como nunca

  • grew up with this song and it still gives me goosebumps!

  • @woodle22 Exactly the same here. My mother had a 45 rpm version of this (CBS records, I think), with the original version on side A and this on side B.

  • Gigliola Cinquetti is amazing ... Check out "La Pioggia" in Italian version or japanese version.

    Ciao

  • I still have the original 7" single of this (on CBS 2294) which I bought back in '74. The A-side in English as 'Go (Before You Break My Heart)', and the B-side has the original Italian version, 'Si'. Peaked at No. 6 in Ireland, and No. 8 in UK.

  • what a beautiful song l bought it way back in the 70s and lost it, well done for finding it l will treasure it on here..cheers..

  • Wow! The english version at last, i only had this song on a really old tape, taped from an old scratched record, which was still good enough. Then the Italian version on yt couple of years ago.........and now this version, the one i grew up with....................aaaah........thanks conniff44. Oh yeah nice vid too.

  • I just this song! I am a hugh Fan of Gigliola Cinquetti. I especially like the English version and quite like the German version too! (for some reason)?

  • This english Version was a Top 10 Hit in the U.K. Charts in 1974! (reached No.8!)

  • I've looked countless times for this on CD, it's absolutely criminal you can't get it, it's fabulous, much better than "Waterloo" (Abba) which won the contest that year.

  • Fabulous to hear this again - a wonderful song, very well performed. Pity you can't get it on CD in English. It's called "Si" in her native Italian

Gigliola's other winners were "Non Ho L'Eta Per Amarti" (I'm Not Old Enough To Love You) and one that we called To The Door Of The Sun (Alle Porte Del Sole) but avoid the disco-y remake

  • I have this on vinyl, I bought it when it was in the British charts back then. If anyone wants it just contact me and I will try to get it to you.

  • I would love to have a copy of this song.

Please contact me if you still have it available.

    Regards,

    Carina

  • Fabuluous track. I too have been trying to locate the English version for ages. I just wonder why other 'divas' have not recorded it as well.

  • The best version of course it's in italy, when she is singing in the name of planet earth, so much better in Italy.

  • Thanks for posting not heard this one for thirty years, i'm nineteen years old again.

  • I always thought this was a Eurovision song but can't see it mentioned in the comments ... have i got it mixed up with something else? It's a great song anyway.

  • Correct, this is the english version of "Sì", her song 2nd classified in ESC 1974.

In italian english german or french it's such a kind of heaven

  • Thank you :o)

  • Gigliola Cinquetti won the Eurovision Song Contest for Italy in 1964 with Non pour l'eta (per amarti). That's what you thinking of. Happy to clear that up for you.

  • I am so glad you are all enjoying this and it is bringing back sweet memories.

Sorry about the video, it is all I had at the time.

  • nice one,thanks for posting

  • Fantastic,I've been searching for this song for years!I couldn't remember the name of the singer I was only ten when it came out.Lovely to hear it again brings my youth back!!

  • I was about that age when I listened to this song the first time too!One of my aunts had the cassette and I loved it since then.Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Argentina!

  • Merry Christmas or "Nadolig llawen" in Welsh to you too.

  • Jesus, this song always gives me chills ... no matter whether it's the Italian, German, English or French version ... all so moving.

  • My mum and dad bought this when I was a kid in the 70's. Thanks for posting. Brings back loads of memories.

  • so glad ive found this song again after so many years,,,brilliant,,thankyou.xx

  • Thankyou SO MUCH conniff!!! You are a STAR!!!!

  • this song gingers up memories of when i was a kid, really love the song.

  • i remember as a teenager watching this song being performed on top of the pops - was so taken with it that i went out and bought the single - still a big favourite

  • I remember this song well when I was a very small kid, but I never knew what it was, what language or who. I've searched for decades and found it here. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you.

  • Naturally "beautiful" like the Gigliola image!

  • love this song and have album and probably 2-3 singles of it.

had a look and you can buy the single or album on ebay quite cheaply.

anyone have her singing this on top of the pops or similar show.

  • I would also love to see this set to a video of her actually singing it.

  • Thank you for sharing with the rest of youtube afficionados of Gigliola

  • I Usually prefer to hear her ainging in Italian, however I do like this English version. I love it. Its a classic.

  • thank you for this video, I was looking for it.Best wishes.

  • thanks conniff. saw "to the door of the sun". great job. your monument is in Florence on the right of the main entrance of Palazzo Vecchio.

  • please conniff, upload to the door of the sun!!!!! i´llmake you a monument

  • Your wish is my command. I hope it is as you remember it, but enjoy anyway.

  • All I can say is wow

  • My dad had this on vinyl (hopefully still has!) and I remember listening to it as a little girl of about 9 or 10 years old. I loved it then, even though it always made me cry, the emotion in her voice blew me away even as a child. I have been searching on YouTube for some time hoping to hear it again - and here it is! Now, 31 years on, I still love it, and it still makes me cry. A heartfelt thankyou from this 41/10 year old, sitting here with a tissue and streaky mascara xx

  • @mizscarlettgrace - I totally know where you are coming from. My dad played this song (and a whole bunch of others from the time, stylistics etc) when I was about 9 or 10-ish, my dad had good taste in music but at the time I didnt think so, this song brings back so many fond memories of the time, the emotions involved too, sadly Dad passed in 1991 but through music like this he is never far. I don't have the streaky mascara but maybe a wee tear in my eye. All the best.

  • Fab - it's nigh on impossible to find the English version nowadays so thanks!

  • Cheers conniff.

  • I have her English version of 'Alle Porte Del Sole' (To The Door Of The Sun) which I will put up as soon as I have some suitable video to go with it.

  • Thank you Conniff44, I will be waiting for this version as it is my all time favorite song.

  • I think the English version is OK. The whole lyrics where changed though, because "Si" does not translate very well to English, as the title of a song. So the whole song was changed instead!! but it's nice to hear Gigliola sing in English, for the first time in my experience. She sound's very good singing her English word's.

  • I agree. Her English is very nice. She even had some songs in German. And her German is stunning. As German I have to admit much better than the one some Germans speak. So, la bellissima is really really fantastic.

  • A complete diapppointment when sang in English!

  • Thanks for posting the English words used by Gigliola. The lyrics were obviously changed for the English version of the song. "Go" sounds much better for the title as "Yes" would have done. The song just wouldn't have sounded right if it was called Yes.

  • Never heard this version before!

    Lots of thanks!!!
