I think the only mistake Stephan made was to change his style so quickly.

Some marketing experts don't recommend that because the audience gets confused.

There's a band called Mudvayne that had problems with publicizing themselves because they changed their look too often: people didn't recognize them easily.

When Stephan changed Apoptygma's aesthetics and style a part of his audience couldn't deal with the changes.

It's funny because you think that people is intelligent enough to notice and understand these things, but no, people got scared (I don't know if "scared", it is an irrational behavior anyway) and started doing what people does better: destroy.
