  • In California, the Jerusalem cricket is known as a potato bug. Its large, human-like head has inspired both Native American and Spanish names for the Jerusalem cricket. For example, in Mexico they are referred as Nino del la tierre, or child of the earth. Although many Mexicans believe they eat babies, they don't. They just have a baby-like head.

  • Common Myths

As is true for other large, arthropods (e.g. solfugids), there are a number of folk tales regarding Jerusalem crickets which are simply untrue; first and foremost, they are not venomous. However, they can emit a foul smell and are capable of inflicting a painful bite - but neither is lethal, as some of the tales would suggest. They also do not cry like children, nor do they rub their legs together to make sounds.

  • cute

  • You should have eaten that shit.

  • arent those the crickets that can bite painfully? Though not lethatl, still, it has a painful sting O_O

  • @xKJx25 They rarely bite, it is only a pinch and not very painful. They let go if you tap them on the head.

  • @xKJx25 dude I agree. When I was a kid, a good friend of mine rolled a rock over and got bit by one of these right in the meaty part between the thumb and index finger. If you ask him, he wouldn't say it wasn't very painful as WmReinhardt stated; it still stung a bit. Even though he cleaned it he still got a small infection with yellow excretion from the bite probably caused by whatever bacteria was on this things mandrels. The street name for these in New Mexico is Child of the Earth.

    eeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • They look beautiful!

  • "It's a termite"

    "It's a queen bee"

    "Those are poisonous"

HAHAHAHA You guys are funny. It's 100% a potato bug aka Jerusalem cricket. I have a phobia of them so I've done my homework. They aren't poisonous. They CAN bite. They don't jump or fly. They make noise by thumping their legs against their abdomen or drumming their abdomen on the ground. They are harmless but still freak me the F*CK out.

  • why dont you leave the poor thing alone

  • its hypothetically kissing you! you are the insect whisperer!

  • everytime i clean my pool i see these bugs lurkin around and drowning themselves.

  • oh, wow, a jerusalem cricket. i remember catching those on a cross-country trip down to tucson, arizona when i was a kid. thanks for bringing back memories.

  • If I saw it and I didn't know wat it was, i probly would've smashed it lol

  • also called jerusalem crickets

  • Thats a queen bee

  • What a surprisingly cute little critter.

  • It's cute!

  • Commonly referred to as "potato bugs," even though they do not prefer potatoes and are technically not bugs, they are also called niña de la tierra (child-of-the-earth), stone cricket or chaco. Believed by some to be fierce and poisonous, this nocturnal cricket is actually non-aggressive and possesses no poison glands, although its jaws can inflict a painful bite.

:INFO FOUND IN WIKIPEDIA for those how want to know more.

  • I can't stand bugs, but this one is actually cute.

  • I've seen the jaws on this thing, they're huge!

  • what ist the name of this animal?

  • @o012360o Potato bug. I think they are sooooooo cute.

  • it didnt bite u

  • they arny poisonous but they do bite real hard when i was small my neibors used to scare me if i looked into there eyes you would die

  • lolz my 14 yr old friend found one at the bottom of my friends pool and wouldnt get it out... it was hilarious

  • That's not a potato bug that's a jerusalem cricket

  • @flamezombie1 They are called both.

  • i seen those outside near trees and shit...i thought it was a big ass ant

  • why is it called GIANT, SCARY BUG EATS HAND! If it doesnt even bite you?

  • it's a termite.

  • I remember on Fear Factor... when they had to eat likt 20 of these... I almost threw up,,,,

  • I didnt see it eat your hand tard. Need to change title of video

  • I squish creepy looking things that crawl.

  • These shits are actually poisonous. They're called "ninos de la tierra" in Mexico. I would be freaking out if I found one walking on my hand

  • @MassG69 Don't be ignorant all your life, if you actually look at the science, they are harmless and easy to handle. They rarely bite unless provoked and it's just a minimal 'pinch'. I handle these bugs all the time and many much larger.

  • @WmReinhardt i though these guy's bites to hurt like hell

  • @WmReinhardt so said the people who worked with sharks

  • @WmReinhardt Aren't these bugs more related to sun spiders (camel spiders)?

  • @WmReinhardt

A lot of mexicans consider this bug to be very poisonous. Ignorance just leads to ignorance, glad that I'll be able to break that cycle though, now that I know the truth.

  • @WmReinhardt some people just dont know

  • @MassG69 It is not "niños de la tierra" it is called "cara the niño" and in english is something like "child face"

  • @MassG69 They are not 'poisonous'. Get your facts straight.

  • @MassG69 actually there not poisonous..thats just a myth that continues to grow in mexico!..and yes they are also called "nino de la tierra" it means "child of the earth".

  • @MassG69 you knoe people say in albama that pray mantises are poisonous and thats not ture dont beleive ever thing you here man i pick these up all the time when i find them

  • @jdavis332 Finally, someone sees the truth behind the myth!

  • @MassG69 you are a mexican? ok tht explains it, these are not shits you retard you are shits

  • @rohkanempire They are poisonus, but a bite wont harm anybody..

Take a grammar class, even the foriegner (mexican, dude) has better sentence punctuation/structure than you.

  • @thetito626 They are NOT poisonous, check the facts on any entomology site.

  • can a potato bug bite?

  • Stop being mean to it

  • that is like a bug nightmare

part bee part termite and part like spider uggg

  • Protien!!!

  • that bug is gay, isn't it?

  • i believe that this potato bug is a species of the weta crickets some species are very aggressive and will bite

  • THOSE ARE NOT ADORABLE!!!!

  • At first it looked gross, but when it ´started walk on the hand it looked kinda cute. But still scary, i would scream and die if that bug was walking on me.

  • in Mexico we call them

    "ninos de la tierra"

    They're poisonous....

  • they look like mutated ants

  • Two things that I would prefer handling a spider over. Beetles and ants. xD I kid you not. And this is like a huge version of both. I would probably keel over if I saw one of these.

  • It's CUTE!

  • THAT THING WILL BITE YOUR DICK OFF

  • @koolassdude HELL YEAH!

  • Bill - This is adorable - I love the music.

Can't imagine letting a bug walk on me like that.

It trusted you. That's quite the compliment coming from an insect!

    Closing image very nice.

    Lovely work, William

A good time had by all.

    LuRain

  • Thanks, I'm fond of many insects, especially spiders, Just trying to dispel the myths and fears of creatures less fortunate. The bugs we fear the most are usually the least dangerous.

  • @WmReinhardt Spiders aren't insects :)

  • i remember the first time i saw one, i thought it was a Giant Ant

  • @Coldsteal21 same here dude!!!! now i found out what they are and yeah they seem just as harmless as an ant itselt

  • its a type of wetta

  • i herd they could bite realy hard

  • they do but are USUALLY herbivores... but some of the asshole ones will eat their mates/other fgts/// AND HANDS MAW FYXCcjfjkjk

  • ok man it is funky looking too but o well

  • They can bite but usually don't if handled when they are not threatened.

  • ok case i was watching a nother viedo and it said they can bite realy hard

  • That thing is ugly

  • lol people fear everything they have little knowledge of

  • So true about bugs, spiders and especially about these guys!

  • I wish I was less scared of bugs... or not scared at all...

    :(
