@waltermcbobom Please, enough with the PF comparisons! RUSH was hardly taking cues from PF. Led Zepplin had much more of a direct and profound influence for them than PF ever had.
@mlg4035 I was referring to the beginning of the song, and I'm not implying that Rush is trying to sound like PF in this instance. Rush has their own sound clearly, but the beginning of this song has a pf - zeppelin feel in my opinion. Not trying to insult the band in any way lol.
@mlg4035 i dont think so all members of rush cite the both pink floyd and zeppelin both were major influences but to me it sounds like zeppelin and floyd together
@caseyjones67 It's a story based off of Lord of the Rings lore. The last part, "The Return of the Prince" is a reference to the last LotR novel, and By-tor is just brought in for fun I suppose.

this is a super deep song, one of rush's best by far, after seeing the documentary, i loved it when alex said that when they played this for paul stanley, he didn't get it, too deep for him, what a super gem
I only became a Rush fan about 7, 8 years ago. So I am still in the process of discovering more of their extensive discography. Just downloaded Caress of Steel and The Necromancer has definitely catapulted its way to the top 5 of my much played Rush songs. As far as just being pure musically brilliance, Floyd's Animals use to be my absolutely favorite album. I think Caress of Steel has bumped that over
@Tonezone well, i just wanna hear the drum solo. now if you wanna know what i listened to way back in the '70s just ask. for now i will leave you with, airo smith 'train kept a rollin'' it's one of the baddest rock and roll songs i've ever heard! also bad is the group paris, big town 2061, and blue robbin, homebound by ted nugent, working man by rush, and of course 2112, ok, that should get you started, come back if you want more, because there is oh so much more!! oh yah, you can be happy for
@vanhalen515084 The Golden Age of Rush -IMO. 1975-78. Not that they got worse after this, just that the musicianship heard on these 5 albums, esp. hemispheres, is so far above any other band..
the riff that starts at 4:24 sounds like the riff from Cygnus X1. I love how they have riffs that sound like riffs from other songs. I think it's pretty awesome.
My father introduced me to this album a few years ago, and ever since then I haven't found any music that could be more awesome. The album, and this song in particular, is just totally badass. Seriously, where did music go wrong? Can't find anything this good these days.
My favorite Rush album and favorite Rush song For 30 years now(1981). first heard it in the sixth grade my uncle was playing it on grandma's record player and he said with an evil grin "listen to this If you think Tom Sawyer is good this is fuckin bad" and he was right. After all this time this song/album still takes a person somewhere else when they sit down and listen to it !
@ThePersonTalking I was just posting that it is both "Into Darkness" and "Under the Shadow", because I saw that he hadn't clarified that himself, and that the song he labelled Part 2 is "Return of the Prince" which is Part 3 on the album. I'm not dissing him, this video is awesome quality with excellent audio, I was just helping clarify for fans of the band/song.
@radioheadkids2 haha yeah im loving this my faja has over 1200 vinyls and ive listened to just about all of them or the ones ive been privelidged to find and he had all the vinyls of rush up to Signals and ive listened to them in their entirety. Now actually being able to express the joy of listening to rush with people of like minded opinions is amazing.
My fav Rush album! My friend down in south texas turned me on to this in 1981 while we were smoking up in jr high school . I sure miss being young and full of fun. This is one of great albums of my life. THANKS RUSH!!!
This is the RUSH I love. The studio versions were recorded just as they would sound live ( I think they indulged on one track per album ) but the rest were as when playing live. Geddy's voice was just magical, Alex's guitar sound and style Majestic, Neil's lyrics and percussion both out of this world. A pure listening experience and all from just three, yes THREE amazing musicians and people. I feel very privileged to have been a Rush fan since 1977. Long may they continue to weave their magic.
@coopersgirl52 Besides being amazing musicians, a lot has to be said for the three of them steering clear of the perils of Rock & Roll.....alcohol & drug addiction, paternity suits, megalomania, etc.
No reason for calling me names....I never said Zeppelin was a trio. I said we had the Zeppelin and ZZ Top (who were a trio) ...I was just listing two power bands and opined that none (trio or not) could match this triplet. My apologies for not being specific enough. Cheers.
Why does the By-Tor character go from an evil devil's prince in By-Tor & the Snowdog to "the champion" good guy in the Necromancer? LSD? memory issues?
Alex Lifeson, in his career from the GET GO -has been one linear, enigmatic sumbitch-you tell me when he was ever better at any one time-then?-now?-WTF?-he was Hendrix level king then!-With Rush you have it all...ALL!!!
this is my all time favorite song from RUSH !!! when i first heard this, i could imagine that i saw this unfold from above, looking down and watching this tale as an observer. i can see their travels, trials, and tribulations. i can see the conflict building. i can see the battle of prince by-tor. i can see the necromancers defeat. this song is the best example of good vs. evil and the way alex "duels" with geddy from guitar to bass while the drums keep the pace of the battle...fucking AMAZING !
amazing eclectic song that epitomizes Rush.. they were awesome in SLC last month.. awesome with the lightning in the background in unison with the song Witchhunt.. WOW.. aesthetic experience indeed.. thank you Rush for helping me live outside the box and understanding knowledge in an in depth benevolent manner. Toast

Can u being any sicker musicians...?..?..best 3 piece ever ...and most talented..2nd i would say Primus...(as far as 3 piece) ..great musicians as well........La Villa is one of my favs as well...
Geddy Lee has the coolest rock voice ever. Neil is the reason I played the drums for so many years. Saw them on their Moving Pictures tour and was never the same again.
sounds so pink floydish.reminds me of dogs. It definatley has that exact same rift as dogs several times throughout the begining. still amazing though
@crapmonkey343 Welll... this song is two years older than pink floyd's. So you should probably say dogs is a good song, even though they copied the riff from rush :P

I agree, after 'Signals' whatever Rush came out with doesn't exist for me lol. Grace Under Pressure had its moments, but they started relying to much on synthesizers after this album and that was it!
@heelhook100 Completely agree... Signals was awesome and Grace under pressure was decent but after that it was hit and miss for me. Still Classic Rush (1974-82) is my favorite band! Period!!
@prsplayer210 Yeah i do like counterparts...still to me not as great as their old stuff.. but still good...they really re-invented themselves with that album
@Johnnywr Yeah the eighties Rush sucked. Signals was definitely the end of an era. I used to think they were "okay" until I started to delve into there music. Now they are near or at the top of my favorites. I love Hemispheres thats got to be my favorite. such a talented group of musicians.
i loved this song the first time i heard it 20 years ago and i still never seems to get boring.

@heelhook100 Completely agree... Signals was awesome and Grace under pressure was decent but after that it was hit and miss for me. Still Classic Rush (1974-82) is my favorite band! Period!!

@Rowdyrecords55 what you think of counterparts i agree with you hit and miss after 82 but counterparts is an epic album you agree?

@prsplayer210 Yeah i do like counterparts...still to me not as great as their old stuff.. but still good...they really re-invented themselves with that album

@Johnnywr Yeah the eighties Rush sucked. Signals was definitely the end of an era. I used to think they were "okay" until I started to delve into there music. Now they are near or at the top of my favorites. I love Hemispheres thats got to be my favorite. such a talented group of musicians.
