  • Definitely there are others who able to sing this piece far more better than her, but for some reason, I find myself constantly coming back to this to listen to this version. She definitely sacrifices of singing technically perfect, but the emotion that's given instead is far superior to listen to.

  • She`s Superb!

  • Fabulous!

    diana

  • I belong to you

    Muse!!!!!!

  • gogo clarinet solo! :)

  • Very good performance of this aria, but I prefer Jessye Norman's version :)

  • Simply perfect. I believe this is one of the very best perfromances. Her restraint is part of her magic. I agree that Olga Borodina understands the aria and I think she is as good.

  • Simply perfect. I believe this is one of the very best perfromances. Her restraint is part of her magic.

  • I'm afraid this interpretation of the aria is not very good. I don't care for her stage presence and her voice lacks something that other sopranos and mezzo sopranos have. The definitive version is by Olga Borodina.

  • This is not her repertoire.... and I agree it is a bit sterile.

  • I try to like but I miss something out of her performance. sorry Anna.

  • @mtlhoma for me, it is this. She has a beautiful voice, but her technique has placed it principally nasally, to feel certain, a common technique which however keeps the voice out of its placement where it can truy sing us at its best, and fullest. Her high note goes up in that true place, nice, though.

  • @gwirgalon I think it, too but she sing very well i think and her high notes are the best. I think she sing not always nasally, except in this concert. Elina one of my favourite opera singer. I think she doesn't use her body enough in many opera arias. I dont think her head-resonance is bad, it could be very very good except it is sometimes a little bit nasal, okay, but i think she could do better, and in many concert it is better. In my opinion it is only by her lawer voice. I think.

  • @gwirgalon she misses the soul. she is good, technically, but the soul. Is not the soul the essence of evertyghing?

  • @mtlhoma I very like Elina Garanca, her voice, and how she is singing, but i miss something , too.. For example : I love this aria from her, but i would need more emotion.... I think, the emotion is not enough. Elina is always a little bit moderate to me, but i really like her.

  • Musers!: 2:03 ;)

  • Comment removed

  • I've always wonder how can Dalila sing this without meaning it, and then betray Samson...

  • @NoirOrchestre That's the problem. You go to the opera to enjoy it, not to understand it. Who cares about much-maligned librettos of Trovatore, or Puritani, or La Forza? It's beautiful. Stop.

  • @NoirOrchestre Think of all the forced marriages where the women--or girls--had to survive a man in her whom she didn n't want touching her, or who had just beaten her--how did --does--she survive? She thinks of another and sings to him..

  • Musers here? :D

  • Of the renditions I've heard, I treasure Jessye Norman's phenomenal interpretation has all the heart-felt passion and richness befitting the aria. Her presentation is featured on YouTube.

  • Using the age-old saying ..... in this aria Ms Garanca just doesn't have the balls in her low notes to truly pull it off! What a pity.

  • I agree she's overrated... her French diction, too!

  • thumbs up if muse brought you here

  • Oh my God, HEAR JESSYE NORMASN and you know the difference...

Garanca is a overrated singer...she has no body, no opulence, the timbre, the voice is streetched...

Norman shows what a swinger need to be a star forever: a Voice! A VOICE

  • @OLIVCHEN77

Oh God, I couldn't agree more. Jessye Norman - and Shirley Verrett - all life long!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Perfeito.

  • Where is the seductiveness?

  • Just beautiful!! Loved watching her in the Met's recent production of Carmen!!

I'm sorry, but you should NEVER sacrifice precision and proper technique for emotion. Once you establish good technique, THEN you can fully experiment with emotion and interpretation.

  • I'd choose Jessye Norman as Delilah... ^^ peace to you all.. ^^

  • Comment removed

  • @MusicalTenor23 Absolutely right! Garanca is here like Daisy Duck to the Venus of Milo

  • Callas "sacrificed" precision for emotion. Emotion is in fact what ART is all about anyhow. Solid technique is great and in most cases a must, but it is not the reason why we sing, dance, draw, sculpt. It is the emotional enlightenment that matters. That is why Callas and many others were brilliant. Who can do this? You? Perhaps you can. I hope so. I hope we all can in some way or another. God bless.

  • Perfect!

  • Love;y singing.TY vastvision for posting.

  • Díky , překrásná interpretac mé nejoblíbenější arie.

  • Shit! Voce engolata.

  • If all you critics don't think her voice is seductive enough for a temptress would look at a series of her (in staged opera) Carmens you might think again. This is a recital not a drama.

  • soprano.

  • @bodiloto dude stop it, just because you keep stating she is a soprano in the comments section doesn't mean she is one, how hard is it for you to understand LIGHT MEZZOSOPRANO words?

  • @Maggielicious21 1interpretazione - livello scuola media musicale. 8finale orrendo. 9questa é la voce del soprano.
  • How absolutely, totally wonderful.

    Thanks for the upload!

  • What's wrong with the bloke on the woodwind solo?? Beautiful singing

  • Vastvision...Thank you for posting the lyrics and their translation. What a beautiful aria!

  • @jd7x7jd, yes...maybe in your dreams!

  • goose bumps!!!! Makes me cry everytime I hear it.

  • Indeed a great singer in a great song. Without trying to minimize the great performance of Elina, ( I am biased because I admire her so much ) I think that Maria Callas' performance of this most beuatiful aria is the best ever recorded..

I am so glad that Camile Saint-Saens composed such beauitiful opera..

  • I go back just far enough to remember Rise Stevens singing this aria. I never thought I would ever hear anyone as good as she was. Garanca is not only as good, she is actually better--when does she visit the U.S. West Coast??

  • If I ever get my hands on which one of you gave my phone number to Elina.........

  • Wonderful voice, perfect to play the role. I heard Maria Callas singing it and it was awful! Only Maria Callas fans love to hear her singing, but I heard she singing some notes out of tune and she cracks every time she goes on low notes. On the other hand, Elina mantained her timbre all the same and made a wonderful interpretation. Thanks for posting!

  • @mircavalcante That is because, this aria is made to be sang by a contralto or mezzo, a soprano, could have problems on low notes.

  • @mircavalcante During some parts of her career she (Callas) sang a lot of things very well. She was, however, a great actress at a time when opera did not have that many great actresses and actors. I accept the testimony of N.D. that she was an excellent musician also.

  • As beautiful as her voice can be...and I have heard it many times. To me she is a little too dark and her voice does not seem to carry the weight of such a role. Not my favourite of hers. God bless he though you can see she tries. Just too dark and a little stilted.

  • One of the best mezzo of our time! Her Dalila is too sweet, it is okay for a concert but not for an opera. Anyway she took my heart and she deserves 5 stars!

  • One more comment... after reading a few more comments... "Label", "Terms", "Meant to...", "Has to...", "Should..."... I think, i'd prefer to have a conversation about music with someone who had no knowledge of it... The people on here (majority), I thought would know, music is about interpretation and feeling and you have your OWN opinions about it. Don't categorise it, or say it HAS to sound one way or the other, everyone has their own opinions.

  • I wanted to do music in university, and a lot of these comments reminded me why I didn't go on and do it... though i was good at the theory... I also hated it... so boring, music should just be made by feeling, and sang/performed the way you feel it should...

  • bravissima superb

  • she is a mezzo-soprano.Recognize that a true professional...

  • she is mezzo.There are several types o mezzo-soprano..A profesionist....i mean a real one...knows this.

  • 66 personas no entienden el frances :)

  • Elena is a great mezzo, a great mezzo.

  • Pas inspiré. Boring

  • who is that clarinet..?!...i will kill him...!!..the best sound ever heard..!!!!

  • "Mezzo"...they advertise her so. Good soprano. Nothing special indeed. Listen this sung by Cernei and Verrett. They you get an idea of what "mezzo" and "great" mean.

  • @Vendimi3

    not true. She's a mezzo.

And Garanca sings this MUCH better than Verrett who has real tuning issues.

  • Comment removed

  • comme c'est beau ! chant et emotions !

  • Beautiful!

  • It's good, but I can't enjoy it. Listen to Jessye Norman sing this one. Mind. Blown.

  • @oreosandmik09 true! Jessye is another world!

  • thanks for your comment.

  • look at Marilyn Horne singing the same aria

....the difference between a beautiful FACE and a beautiful VOICE......

  • @Zig0zago Garanca has both.

  • Small, small voice, like those who seem to have success in these days. She's a honest singer. Wonders are definately otherwhere.

  • What bothers me about Garanca is how EVERY TIME she sings a higher note, she does a ritardando on it.... it's very annoying. It almost seems like she's compensating for her wider vibrato, even if it's toward the higher end of her middle voice. It's really frustrating listening and watching her as it really seems as if she's distracted and "thinking" too much, as a late student would do who isn't used to performing that much. Get out of your head and into your character, Elena!

  • Yeah... and Shirley Verrett...

  • Absolutely beautiful. I wonder, though, what did she say at the very end? I cannot make it out...she's definitely addressing Samson, but I cannot discern the rest.

  • @xthewhiteponyx

"Je t'aime", or "I love you" in French. The line is originally sung by Samson in the opera, but in recitals it's sometimes included as part of Delilah's lyrics.

  • Beautiful rendition of this sublime aria- actually half of a duet. But, everyone should hear Jessye Norman's astounding performance of Mon coeur... that was (and I hope still is) posted on Youtube: she sings it at maybe 1/4 tempo- and the effect is stupendous- not only for her amazing breath control but for the dangerous aspect of the music that she underlines thereby! There are 2 great recordings of this opera with Jon Vickers (w Rita Gorr, 1963 EMI and Orialia Dominguez, live)

  • is she a man?

  • @hedonism147 Does she sound/look like the men you hang out with?

  • Beautiful voice. It just doesn't seem right for this piece. In my opinion Elena Cernei sang this aria the best.

  • Graranca ist wonderful - alas, listen to Verret!

  • Bravo

  • Exquisite Dalilah. And with the looks to seduce any Tom, Dick or Samson to cut his hair.

  • MEOW!!!!!!!!!

  • superbe

  • no one ends this aria like marilyn horne anymore. why?

  • @ivantwill Because they do not have the proper vocal class and technique, unfortunately I would add

  • Beautiful voice but.... I think she shouldn´t sing this not even in concerts. Her voice isn´t rich enough for these piece.

  • Personally, and I am sorry to admit this, I don't hear anything more than someone -with a good voice- is singing the notes on the paper.. no more no less..

  • I can't stop listening! And I know when i go to sleep, I'll be hearing this angelic voice in my dream.

  • wow she has such a rich sounding voice

  • bravo, bravo...............................

  • She has the same quality of Rise Stevens

  • @maheldi1

    Absolutly not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bello, ma nessuna come Callas!!!

  • What a beautiful and touching voice!

  • Quoique chante Elina

  • Hermoso...

  • My goodness people, this bitching about A being better than B has been going on as long as opera, and it completely misses the point. Why not appreciate the special gifts each person brings?

  • I love the clarinet player. He stole the show, completely!

  • Schonlich

  • Schonlich

  • Superbe !!!!!! Quelle sensualité !!!!!!

  • I've listened to all renditions here in youtube and in my opinion, Elina Garanca's is the best.

  • @TorontoCA2 I do advice to listen Bumbry's version, which is technically worth too!

  • Awesome! TY

  • She is magnificent!

  • I nearly melted through my sofa when I first saw this on tv...by far the best version of this aria I have heard.

  • my hair is standing on end this is just amazing..rapturous

  • A very sophisticated and brilliant performer - top of the mezzo's ......

  • Sencillamente GENIAL

  • superlative version! So favourite. Cheers!, Sergio.

  • I can listen to her all day long, my favorite Mezzo. Note, she is wearing a flounced dress in a cylindrical shape that was symbolic of a goddess in ancient Sumer. It could be coincidental but it is a happy coincidence.I wish the clarinet was replaced with the oboe d'amore,Otherwise , the performance was outstanding.

  • the best mezzo for the time being.

  • @jfsanin No offense, she's amazing, but I wouldn't say the best. Lovely interpretation, at least she doesn't have all that Bartoli jaw tension though, lol

  • @jfsanin she is a soprano...not a mezzo.

  • @italianoameta She is a mezzo soprano that's what the business labels her and herself labels. Its all in the Tessitura =]

  • @italianoameta

She's a mezzo. really. she has the mezzo passaggio. as a singer and a voice teacher, this is clear.

This aria is, however, meant to be sung by a contralto and requires a darker sound...though having said this, she sings it stunningly well.

  • Wow, what an incredible performance! You may be interested in this 1953 recording of this work by Rosa Ponselle, made in her home with piano accompaniment:

Could touch even a heart surrounded with barbwire ...

Madame Elina Garanca makes me cry each time I listen to this magnificent aria ...

  • @solwrappednpaperlips

    My Darling Christine.

You know what I love and I love this...Be still MY HEART!

    Merci Ma Cherie...Bisous Genia

  • @genia106

Dear Genia you are a tender heart in this wild violent world ! Merci à toi !

I like warm people ! Thanks for being what you are !Kissesssssssssssssssssssssssss

  • She didn't hit the high note at the end. Although she is technically a good singer, she has no musicianship whatsoever. Listen to Shirley Verrett do this piece or Jesse Norman. This is the music industry today, sing for the masses, don't take chances. Too bad.

  • What are the last three lines she says?? I can never figure it out!

  • @pglenn6 Samson,Samson Je t'aime

  • ......honestly, elina garanca's vocal fach is COLORATURA MEZZO-SOPRANO, which means she can sing basically anything she wants. which makes her such a great candidate for roles like this because....sure a soprano could sing it, but it would have no warmth like that of a mezzo voice, she is an amazing singer and should not be mistaken for anything other than that.

  • A very advertised singer. Whom I wouldn't put in the olimpus. She's a good singer, no more. and she's not an authentic mezzo. I'm pretty sure in a few years she'll sing as a soprano.

  • Comment removed

  • @albertorganista No, you´re wrong. On the contrary the role and this aria is written for a mature mezzo-soprano. Nothing else....

  • @dannymaestro I had a trouble with my pc. I wanted to answer to another video...

  • She's not a mezzo!!!!!!!! She is a sopran! And the voice is nothing special, her timbre is not beautiful!!! I am wondering about that noise around her!!!!

  • @bronislavai light mezzo!!

  • @bronislavai She is a mezzo and a very good one at that (though not my fav). Mezzos come in all types of different vocal colors and ranges. Some are lower mezzos and some are higher mezzos. In her coloratura technique, she a has an easy top register and takes advantage of it. That does not make here not a mezzo. My teacher is a coloratura mezzo and she dabbles in Soprano rep but is a definite mezzo.

  • A beautifully sung aria. But an interpretation? I didn't hear nor see that, sorry. Still, an amazingly gorgeous voice.

  • la brava Garanca dovrebbe lasciare in pace Dalila::))

  • @federricoilgrande Definitivo! :)

  • Great shot. Anybody knows who sings this aria and repeats the last sentence: "Je t'aime"?

Is not Callas, nor Horne, nor Ludwig, nor Obraztsova.

I need to catalog the aria.

    Mille grazie a tutti quanti

  • @elycastex denyce graves but i've only seen her with domingo and he also sings it

  • So beautiful ... . perform and song. Brava !

  • One of the best interpretations I've heard of this song! Only second to the Madame Horne...which i would be a dream come true for some of us. :)

    Thanks for sharing.

  • I'm performing this aria too! It's a very wonderfull aria, from a very great composer. Your perfomance it's the best I've find here!!! Your voice it's superb! Congratulations!!!!

  • they don't even sing it in french! . . . . . sorry i don't mean to argue but a friend of mine is crazy about muse and i'm already sick of them

  • Listen to 'I belong to You' by muse, he sings this and its brilliant ^^ and yh he sings it in french :)

  • ok, my bad!! my apology to all muse fans!! matt does sing it in french and it sounds very very nice indeed. . . . . but not better than Camille Saint-Saens original! :D

  • oh sorry i didn't see that you had corrected yourself

  • you're right. When muse says "reponds a ma tendresse," it's actually german for "i like peanut brittle," not french at all.

  • @Maggielicious21

    uh yeah he does -.-

  • they do though. listen to the entire song
