  • BEST breed there is I only wished they lived longer. Our Mackie was only 9 years old when he died;(

  • My buddy used to have an all brown Newfoundland named Murphy. He was so mellow and the hair on his head grew like an Afro. He was like a massive Teddy bear. He recently passed away though, but he was one of the best dogs I've ever known! Miss you Murph !

  • My uncle has a Newfie and I look forward to seeing him every year at Christmas! He's so friendly and loveable.

  • My newf was named Bronko but died in 2008 :(

  • I have a Newie and she's the best dog I ever had. Her name is Koda bear and is small at 150lbs!

  • What song is it? Newfies ! (:

  • The narrator sounds like the one from disney channel O.-

  • Newfoundland isn't even considered a maritime province. People should do the reasearch before they write about something.

  • omg somebody around my house had this dog and it always ran to us and barked at us like crazy we nicknamed him big bear :P

  • I HAVE ONE HER NAME IS LILY SHE IS AWESOME TOO!

  • 4 people are jealous, because a newfie.. is just plain awesome, xD but i own a cocker spaniel. xD

  • 4 people are jealous, because a newfie.. is just plain awesome, xD

  • It's a mop...its a bear....nooo ITS A NEWFIE!!!

  • I used 2 own a black Newfoundland. We called her Winnie. We had 2 give her up as a puppy. She was so fluffy and soft. Now i have a Podengo, we call him Mac. He's the dog that we've had 4 the longest. We all luv him

  • The canadian maritimes are new brunswick, prince edward island, and nova scotia. not newfoundland. however all four make up atlantic canada.

  • so cute

  • funny to bathe as their coat is near impossible to get wet. We own a beautiful brown one. he only drools when we eat in front of him or when he is hot. a drool bib aka bandanna does the trick.

  • @ladyfid my dogs drool nearly reaches the ground when we eat in front of it, especially yogurt

  • We have a brown one!

  • Newfoundland isn't a Maritime province (as it says in the description). New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and P.E.I. are. The maritimes boarder the Atlantic, we're in the middle of it.

  • i don't care about what anyone says newfie's are the best dogs of all the dogs i've know of

  • @GuildWar2Ranger

Newf's are friendly to strangers- so they let them in! But getting out again is the problem if nobody is at home. My newfies has held an insurance salesman and one of our friends "prisoner" until we returned home. And I am sorry to say,- Newfies can be trained to attack. In the fifties Hungarian police used them,- and they killed people! I feel so bad thinking how they could make a Newf do that! (Margaret Chern:The Newfoundland)

  • @strayivan

i have heard about not letting people out before .. i have 2 - haven't heard that from anyone. they are friendly and lovable for sure - couch potatoes- people watchers and very smart. I am from the island and love my 2 newfie girls - best dogs ever and I have had dogs most of my life - but 5 years ago got my first newf - my husband calls us his newfie girls. the best dogs

  • they are so cute and amazing!I love them!

  • The best breed ever! <3 do not agree on trainability! The are so fast to learn and always anxious(spelling?-im Danish) to please! Wonderful dogs!

  • @strayivan how do u deal with the drool? keep a bandana around its neck like the dude in the vid?

  • @ReadMyCommentBitch They do not drool as much as a sct bernard. but when they do, they do not mind wearing a bip(spelling?-like babies have on)

  • The best breed ever! <3

  • I have a Newfoundland dog (actually from Newfoundland, which is where I'm from) named Wallace. I love swimming with him in the little coves of my home island, because they're so big and if their paws hit you it doesn't hurt.

  • @Litterboxer529 one day im gunna move home and get a pure bread newfie :) when my cousin was a babie they had a newfie named rocky and when he was around him the dog wouldnt let anybody touch my cousin lol

  • I want a pack of like 5 newfs, that would be so awesome.

  • I WANT A MILLION NEWFIES! They are so amazing :')

  • I have always wanted a Newfie. My husband, well not so much, he thinks I would have to take a ton of pratt falls trying to teach a Newfie to walk on a leash, not bolt the second the door wall is open like our Bourv's of the past, the last one was a nightmare. I have always had a big to huge dog and have been exposed to Newfie's on and off and thought they would just love me to death when I petted and played with them. Can anyone answer the question of taking off like a shot out of a cannon?

  • @caargoqueen

We have a one yr old newf pup. She does not bolt, but walks at our side or slightly behind us. We did not train her to do this it's instinctive with her. She might lean into you occasionally but that's 'cause she wants to be close to you. We were a little leery about pulling because I had massive knee surgery only a year ago and can't get up if I should fall. No probs whatsoever!

  • i still want one

  • 2 people have never met a newfie

  • my neighbour had one when i was little, SWEETEST DOG EVER!

  • i want one, and i want one now..

  • @billabongBUTTS i have one =p , there are so cute!!!!!!

  • Too short!

  • oooo i just love them they look so cute

with theyr funny faces and furry body you just want to hug them

  • you can get drymouth newfs aswell they only drool when they get a drink lol

  • @MrJonah14 Or when they see something that they REALLY want. Most dogs tend to drool when their favourite food is around.

  • The Newfie would be my type of dog if only I could handle heavy drooling. :-/

  • @GreenGretel i had a newfy/lab and it didn't drool

  • @GreenGretel just use a scarf like the guy in this video

  • @ikbenonfire My family had a 'dog towel' when we had a newfoundland. We never had to worry about anyone using it by mistake.

  • How cute, webbed paws <3

  • @TIBGC I live in the maritimes and Newfound land is totally a maritime, who ever/whatever made you believe it wasn't is very wrong

  • I am willing to say that Newfies are the best dogs in the world. They take a lot of care and maintenance but if you can provide that then you should definitely consider getting one.

  • FROM CANADA WITH SLOBERS

  • why is it that these people fail on location history?newfoundland is not a maritime province

  • I have a Black Lab / Newfie mix. I've had him for about 6 months now (he's 8 months) and he is without a doubt, the best dog I've ever had. Tons of personality and very affectionate.

On that of that he looks fantastic. Face is more lab, his ears are Newfie.

    A perfect "accident" =)

  • Which of his parents was a lab and which was a newfie?

I'd love to see a pic of him lol!

  • This is in my opinion the greatest dog. The kindess, dispositions, strength, it has all the virtues I believe in. This dog is truly majestic.

  • newfies are ace. check out mine on my channel

  • Yeah I can definitely see how they're mistaken for bears sometimes. I was riding my bike down my road one summer and I saw this big black thing come running toward me. I started freaking out because I thought it was a black bear at first, but it was just my neighbor's Newfie, Samantha. :)

  • @parallelpinkparakeet Thats absolutely Hiilarious. I wonder how much it costs to feed one of these big guys, or girls

  • I've pet sitted one of these guys and wow, they are just lovable big bears!

  • They smell compared to my Siberian Husky.

  • these are the best dogs in the world

  • my bff has a newfie and i hav a great pyr

  • I had a Great Pyrenees, and these dogs remind me of him. I want to two of these dogs; a boy and a girl. Love them to death!

  • I don't care how much time i will be spending grooming the dog, i'm getting one.

  • @erehgregrhegrhegr

thats the spirit...u wont regret it one bit! i own a bernese (check out his vids) but my first choice was a newfoundland, the only thing that stopped me was the drooling...neverthelss, im getting a big boy from a breeder in canada in a year or so. These dogs are absolutly the best with children and define gentle giants...let me know if u get one, would love to c a video

  • Ooo i bet your Bernese is sooo great to have around the house with you. I love big dogs with lots of fur.. they're just soo cuddly. I don't think i'll be owning a newfoundland just yet but as soon as i have enough money to stand on my own too feet they are on the top of my list. I would haveone now but i couldn't persuade mum and dad that a newfoundland would be great.

  • And are very smelly aswell as very nice

  • @Buckers29 they only smell if you don't bathe them. just like humans

  • They only smell as much as another other dog. Maybe worse if you don't bathe them.

  • I come from Newfoundland!

  • be au ti ful!

  • I have a PYR, love them, but would love to have a bigger dog that is gentile, like a Newfy.

  • I just love my newfie "Chief". He's 5mos old now and I'm training him for water work. I live near the water on Long Island, NY so I take him to the beach periodically. He loves to harass our older Lab tho and will chase the cats at times. He's gonna be a great dog when he's grown up. He should top the scales at about 150lbs. His dad was a big boy.

  • good wit other dogs????

  • i would think so. they're the most docile breed i know of.

  • i have two that are great with everyone and would be good anywhere very lovable

  • I miss my big black dog.

  • i want a newfoundland, but are they good in condos/apartments? id like a larger dog good in small areas. theres a park near our building someone reply plz

  • Hi lolz6.......,

The space needed for a Newfoundland is no more than you yourself need. The important thing is that they are treated well and accepted as a member of the family. They are not high energy dogs and adapt well to apartment living. Despite the great size they do not wreck your home. Ours navigates the house without tipping "nick~nacks" or drinks from the end tables and so on. He can walk backwards better than I in tight quarters. However, they do want to walk, so don't lock them in

  • im sorry but i disagree with that :(

  • @richeygfd Disagree with what? Newfies are the BEST!!!

  • @mypuppiesx6 not really.. i have one and at times i cant stand him

  • Hey, I've had 2 Newfoundlands and I think they're just fine in small areas. They're super lazy so they don't need alot of room. The only time I really saw my dog get lively is when there was water nearby, when he saw someone he hadn't seen in a while or when we went outside to play with him. They're really very chill dogs.

  • it'll be fine, they are not high energy dogs but they need to be thoroughly walked every day to keep them healthy, if you live near water, they'd love that

btw, they are very big and very hairy, lots of grooming required

  • ok if i live in florida or california can i get a newfie

and second i have a beagle and i wanna newfie but im worried that the nwfie once it is big that if left alone the beagle will get hurt or worse

    what should i do

please write to my inbox and tell me the answer

  • newfies are one of the most gentle breeds, so the beagle wouldn't be a problem, but you would have to be careful that the dog didn't get too hot if you live in a warm climate.

  • i'm from newfoundland, and theres a bunch of newfoundland dogs here

when your out on a boat a newfoundland dog usually comes so if you fall off the boat , they'll jump in and save youXD

they're really big and slobbery and heavy and stuff, but they're awesomee.

  • I Have A Rhodesian Ridgeback/Newfoundland Mix Puppy

    Pain In The Ass

He's Really Out Of Character From What Those Two Breeds Normally Are

    I Love Him Though =]

  • Newfies were made from the Great Pyrenees and black labs about 100 years ago...Thats where they came from.

  • I'm fr. Newfoundland. The occurrence of The Dog was noted here in the very early 16 century. It may have been left by Vikings when they visited over 1000 yrs ago (ad 997) or even before by St.Brenden who, many think, was here even before Vikings.

BTW, Labs are the result of breeding NFLDs' with another dog from here called the St.John's Water Dog (now extinct). For many years the Lab was known as The Lesser Newfoundland. The long haired St.Bernards have NFLD blood in them from 100 Yrs. ago too.

  • ya and bernese have newfoiundlands in them too, from 1800s inorder to increase size and improve tempermant. news and berners are my favourites, the best tempermants and best looking, i like black news with the white chest and tail tip

  • Yes, they are both great dogs.

Ours had a white blaze on the chest when he was a puppy but it faded. That's Ok though.

Look for a Newfoundland dog named Gizmo here on Ytube, he has the most extraordinary white tail tip. He is one of the best Newfoundland dogs I've ever seen.

Please, remember, people living in Newfoundland dislike the word "newfi". The dog is called The Newfoundland and people from here are called Newfoundlanders

  • ya ive seen gizmo he's the exact newfoundland im looking for! such beautiful markings! im heading up to halifax this winter so im gonna take my bernese with me hes gonna have a blast in the cold weather there!

  • newfi is not that derrogatory, " newf" on the other hand is a little offensive.. I lived on the island for 20 years, and am from Paradise area

  • They don't mind being called Newfies, actually.

  • Mine does.

Nice as he is, I've encouraged him to dislike that word.

Would you dare refer to a dog/person from Pakistan as a "paki". No? Then why is it ok for Animal planet and others to so casually use this "N" word.

  • It's not commonly known that people from Newfoundland dislike the word. I know that ignorance is not a defense, but it is an explanation. Plus there are many people that think it's okay to use the word in association with the dog, but not the people (even people from Newfoundland).

  • What word are you talking about? I'm a newfoundland, i'll tell you whatever you want. Haha.

  • Newfie or Newf. And I know that some people just don't give a damn, or even use it themselves, but I also know others that get offended by it. So I just try to stay on even ground and not use it, hehe.

  • You really should lighten up...as a Newfoundlander I'm a proud Newfie

  • Some do. So it's best to either ask, or just not use it.

  • "Swimability"? thats not a word....

  • @romo230 your not a word

  • @romo230 So what?

  • @romo230 It is now :D

  • @romo230 Well, it is now!! ;-) And, very fitting.

  • I love these dogs, but god can they dribble :)

  • The bad thing about living in a tropical country...is I could never have a dog like this. *sniff*

  • I live in hot Florida and I have one.

  • my friend had one. there huge!!!! their nice but they do get very aggresive when they play

  • Not all are aggressive when they play, my isn't.

  • I grew up with a big newfoundland dog. He was so sweet and gentle and just loved everyone that he met. My parents would take him for car rides to Tim Hortens sometimes and he would stick his out the window (drooling on my stepdad's shoulder) and ask for a treat from the drive through people, who were more than happy to oblige with a stale timbit. He once tore our screen door, so the landlord came and fixed it. But as soon as he was done the dog just walked through it again! I really miss him...

  • HAHA!!!!!

  • Friends owned a newfie. He was a big lug that loved people. But neighbors owned cats and two of them were twin Siamese that had IQ's of 120 and then some. They KNEW the newf was behind a chainlink fence and could not get to the cats so they teased him unmercifully. That newf nearly tore that fence apart trying to get at those two every time.

  • I'm sure these dogs don't do well in hot clmates like TX or AZ

  • no they do great out here. since we have summer for pretty much 8 months most people cut their newfy's hair and keep it short so they dont get hot. it also helps if you have a pool because they will swim alot since it helps keep them cool.

  • You can actually shave them and their hair grows back fairly nicely, but a cooler climate is preferable. Especially somewhere that has snow for them to romp through in the winter. They love it ^_^

  • I wish I could see my cousin's newf more often =/ and that dog's got to be getting old. Last time I saw him I wasn't able to do anymore than view him through the window.

  • I am the proud owner of a 3 year old female Newf, named Abbie. Everything they say about them is true. Sweetest dog in the world ( in my opinion). I'll never own any other breed of dog and I'll always have a Newf. The breed is not for everyone. RESEARCH before you get one. I have fond memories of being the boss of my home..... THEN Abbie arrived and I do EXACTLY what she wants. Yeah,... it's like that. :) And we're cool with it~

  • I didn't know much about the breed, mines mixed with Chow too and I just went with my gut and if you ask me I think he enjoys it here. The BEST dog I could ever ask for other than this chewing stage he's going through. Lol.

  • I would LOVE to have one but I go into an absolute decline when one of my dogs dies which is why I switched from huge dogs to middle-sized. What is the average life-span for a Newfoundland dog?

  • I have read life expectancy is between 9 to 15 years

  • I have an 8 year Newfoundland named Raven and she...well, she doesn't like water! What's up with that? But she is the most lovable, if a bit stupid, dog! I just love big dogs. Its so sad that they don't live too long as a general rule :(

  • We had a one called Wellington who was the same, hated water and was a bit dim but the most loyal dog, my brother was attacked outside our house by another dog, Wellington crashed through a plate glass window to come to his assistance, amazing dog who lived to 13 years old.

  • wow 13 not bad but I'm sure the old guy was having a tough time getting around when nearing that age.

  • we had to put him to sleep as his back legs, or hips just gave up, so so sad, very upsetting

  • Understandably so, but he had a good life though. and that should make up for the loss.

  • i have a 2 month old brown with white chest newf.

    :)

  • I have one

  • I love how everything u see on t.v. and shit makes it seem as tho we are all living in boats and fishing for a living in newfoundland. haha with old newfie music in the background. wicked.

  • I love Newfoundlands~

  • Well I am in love with them. Unfortunately due to my current circumstance, I can't have one as yet but its definetly on the "to-buy list".

  • I love this beautiful beings! Newfoundland dogs are the greatest dogs in the world! They truly are gentle giants.

  • If I were to be a dog, I'd be a Newfoundland! Because I love water !

  • " the Canadian maritime providence" - should be Canadian Atlantic province.

  • Newfoundland, where these dogs come from, is not a maritime province......

However, PROVIDENCE did seem to have matched them perfectly to our location and lifestyle.

How many other videos on Ytube require correction like this.

  • Way too many.

  • adorable babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love them so much but can't have one yet...

  • LOVE THEM

    LOVE THEM

    LOVE THEM

  • ...LOVE THEM

  • ...................LOVE THEM! LOL

  • newfi,newfi,newfi,newfi,newfi

  • YEAH.....

  • my dream is own st bernard and great dane and newfoundland

  • Yup... bit dogs ARE something, aren't they?

(Note: If you want a Newfoundland for a St. Bernard, be prepared to clean up after its drool.)

  • I've always wanted a Newfoundland... my Great Pyr wouldn't get in the water to save his life. lol

  • I have a Noofy! She's going on 8 and she does not like water! A Newfoundland who doesn't like water?! But she's a sweetheart, like the video said, a big teadybear :)

  • Searchlight just calm down, people aren't even referring to humans, they are referring to the dogs...

ALOT of breeds names are shortened, like the petit basset griffon vendeen is called the PBGV, shiba inu is called the shiba, rottweiler the rottie, doberman the dobie, you dont hear them complaining about it do you?

rottweiler is from a name of a place also, rot wil, are they complaining about the rottie part of it? no

no one is talking about you ppl when they say newfie, its just the DOG

  • When I say them I mean the breed lovers or something, or louis dobermann's descendants

  • Twice in one day last weekend while walking my dog we,THE DOG AND I, that is, were referred to as Newfi by visitors to this island. I'm sure that otherwise those two couples (1 American 1 Canadian) are "aware" enough not to insult "the locals" when they travel. The dogs are well known around the world and I can tell you that this habit of calling them Newfies does carry over to people. And, most people here dislike being called by that nickmame. Is that so hard to understand.

  • Well even if they do, it's nothing mean like the n word or something.....

Probably not meant to be offensive....

  • I am from Wales and we are called Taffy. And I have Newfies. So.. Taffy with the Newfie. Who cares as long they respect the dogs.

  • I'm not pointing-out any disrespect of the dogs, rather, I complain that the nick-name is too often carried over to the human. While you may be ok with Taffy, I, and most Newfoundlanders intensely dislike being called "newfie". In Canada, it has immense connotations which you could not understand (no fault of yours). The frequent application of the term to describe the dog adds greatly to the problem as it relates to the person. I too live with a Newfoundland.

Neither of us is a newfie

  • Thanks Searchlight22 point accepted. I try to avoid the word Newfie, for my dogs, as I personally dislike the word, just as I have a personal distaste for the pronunciation Newfundland. That is a personal matter. Also, I have shown throughout my life great respect for Canadians and this has been recognized and I have no desire to give offence to people from a country I greatly admire. It is just that sometimes I get worried about PC. Best wishes.

  • all of you just STFU :D NEWFI

  • LOL. I agree. There are dogs with LONGer names than that. Consider the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, not exactly a name that rolls off the tongue. It's not like the dog is being disrepected.

  • You did not answer my question. Would you call a dog from Pakistan a "packi". And, would you understand, when the East Indian holding the leash "kicked you in the balls" for inulting him/her ??? MOST OF THE PEOPLE LIVING HERE IN NEWFOUNDLAND HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE BEING REFERRED TO AS "NEWFIE(S). CALLING THE DOG A NEWFIE leads the uneducated to the use of that term to describe our people as well as the dog. Please refrain.

  • 1st you didn't ask me any question. My reponse was to Lalalaliar, not you. 2nd I think you're taking this thing too serious and need to relax. Anybody kicks me would be murdered by my dogs so don't be stupid. People call the Siberian Husky a Husky. Labrador a Lab. Rottweiler a Rott. Doberman Pinscher a Doberman. Akita Inu - Akita. Just b/c people call them a Newfi doesn't mean they uneducated of them. You really need to stop acting pompous over a dog's name b/c...

  • Look,H/Clov I'm not just speaking for me. Most people who live here DO NOT like to be called Newfi. The casual application of that nickname to the dog gets carried-over to those people living here in NL. It's either used in a patronizing way or with the "F" word in front. How do you feel when someone from away calls you a "Yank".What if they call you "A Fucking Yank" as is often the case we contend with, how would you feel about that? My point is, the use of Newfi for the dog adds to the problem

  • WOW, people are so sensitive these days. Get real lady, the average American don't even know what a Newfoundland is, much less know or care about NL so I doubt you'll be called a Newfi anytime in your lifetime. Most of 'em ask "Is that a bear?" Just ask any American Newfi owner and I doubt it is just in America that people do it. As for the name transiting to the people, I'd bet 5 out of 80 people would even care to visit NL. It is not THAT high on the tourist attraction.

  • I doubt you can even see my side of the story b/c you're obviously patriotic to an extreme and fervently stubborn on this tedious issue of a dog, while being great, isn't THAT popular and never will be worldwide or even nation wide. We will have agree to disagree.

  • Newfoundland owners love their dogs and what does it matter if we call it otherwise? People often have shorten names themselves. Barthalomew turns to Bart. Catherine turns to Cat. And lastly, do people from Newfoundland really hate it or are you trying to speak for every person there? Also, c'mon, as much as I love Canada, I doubt anybody will refer to you as a Newfi as only YOU could make the mistake of calling yourself a Newfi instead of a Newfoundlander. Give people a LITTLE more credit.

  • Sorry Hamm/Clov, I had notseen this last comment of yours til now. Really don't think we are called newfie? Last month, 1 of the larger radio stations in Toronto was ordered to issue an apology(or lose it's licence) for broadcasting a "newfie joke". BTW, Newfoundland dogs were the 1st "fad" breed in the US. Labs, the most popular breed; are a breed 'spun" from the Newfoundland. They were called "the lesser N/L for many years. Do a little research. Ask the CBC about the word newfie too, get facts

  • Very correct. And Newfoundland wasn't even part of Canada until 1949. The proper name for it is Newfoundland and Labrador.

The dogs themselves-- well, they are a bit of mystery. Their exact ancestry isn't known, but educated guesses can be made.

The big dogs were such a fad in the US and Europe that they were very different from the ones in Newfoundland by the end of the nineteenth century.

The big Newfoundland dogs were used as retrievers in Britain. Audubon had one for retrieving birds

  • Yes, Canada, in fact, did not join Newfoundland until 1949. It's also a fact, the NFLD was the first fad dog, several found homes at The White House for example and, many Royals and lesser members of the Nobility had them as well. The Black Lab was the result of crossing NFLD's with The St.John's Water Dog. For many years they were known as "The lesser Newfoundland dog"

  • LoL good on ya

  • it's just a name it's not like we're calling them hogs. besides, what do you expect from americans lol

  • Please, please please please please can we stop referring to these wonderful dogs as "Newfi" Newfy" or any other shortened version of their full name. Times have changed, most people living in Newfoundland really dislike the term Newfi. Would you dare call a dog from Pakistan a "Packi"? I don't think so.

  • I agree! People need to call th edogs by the actual names. Example dachsund are called winer dogs! It irrates me! Cuase i have a dauchsund and newfundland! People call then newfy and weiner dog
