This song was penned by Horatio Spafford. You have to know his story in order to really grasp this song. He lost his son to scarlet fever, I believe, then lost his business to a fire & was made to pay for the damages due to some legal technicallity. He heard of work & put his wife & 3 daughters on a ship to go ahead of him but the ship sank & his daughters drowned.
His wife took a train back to be with Heratio but train crashed & she was killed. Yet through out all this tragedy he was still able to put his trust in the Lord and say "IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL."
A classic song! So uplifting and ministering....great to listen to when our problems start to overwhelm us... Hallelujah!! What a beautiful voice too!

During this voyage, the captain of the ship called him to the bridge. "A careful reckoning has been made", he said, "and we are now passing the place where the de Havre was wrecked." Horatio then wrote this hymn.
It sank in only 12 minutes, claiming the lives of 226 people. All four of the Spafford daughters drowned. Anna was saved by a plank which floated beneath her unconscious body and propped her up. When the survivors of the wreck had been rescued, Mrs. Spafford's first reaction was one of complete despair. Then she heard a voice speak to her, "You were spared for a purpose."

It read: "Saved alone." On November 2nd 1873, the 'Ville de Havre' had collided with 'The Lochearn', an English vessel.

When my grandfather was on his last threads of life, he had my dad and his brother and sisters sing this song to him. My grandfather died to this song being sung to him. I wasn't incredibly close to him. But there isn't a day I don't miss him. He was a brilliant man, and had answers for everything. He was a pastor until the day he died. I own all of his sermons to this day. I know he is in heaven and he is watching me with my grandmother. I hope that when I go home to heaven I will see them.

It's not about rights outbalancing wrongs, for we are not saved nor condemned by our actions. We are saved through the grace of Jesus' forgiveness. I will soon turn 60 years old. I was saved just last Sunday. God began working in me a year ago, and I fought. I didn't want it. He finally broke down my walls, and I cannot express the joy, the love, that filled me!! This beautiful hymn sings just how I feel. @SusDgs I'm 58 and this has been a favorite for my whole family since I was very young. My grandfather did not get saved until in his 70's. Yet this was a song that seemed to speak to him in a very real way also. I praise God for you and will remember you in my prayers.

@SusDgs That is beautiful news to hear that you are now saved. Thankyou for posting this. It is very encouraging to hear this. I also had put up a wall and fought. Some of Gods people prayed for nearly 30 years for my salvation 12 years ago. No wall is too high or too strong for God to overcome. Great is our God!

traveling around Britain on one of his great evangelistic campaigns. Horatio and Anna planned to join Moody in
late 1873. And so, the Spaffords traveled to New York in November, from where they were to catch the French

Accepting Jesus Christ as your saviour can cleanse all your sins you have committed till now and you will have your name in heaven to reach. There is no other way to reach heaven except Lord Jesus Christ. Bible is a Word of God through which God speaks.. i challenge your situation in your life, open the Bible you will be surprise to see the solution of your life... that comic book will become your serious book in life.

@SusDgs Welcome to our family in Christ. Your statemet is a wonderful example of how no matter what a persons age, salvation is quite simply one decision away. It's not about rights outbalancing wrongs, for we are not saved nor condemned by our actions. We are saved through the grace of Jesus' forgiveness. My Granddad was very unwell and didn't speak much for months but days before he passed away on 21st October 2010 a patient heard him quietly singing this hymn.

The guy who wrote this song lost his wife and children who were on a ship that had sunk. When he later went to the place where they died he felt overwhelming peace. Later on he wrote this song about that experience.

I will soon turn 60 years old. I was saved just last Sunday. God began working in me a year ago, and I fought. I didn't want it. He finally broke down my walls, and I cannot express the joy, the love, that filled me!! This beautiful hymn sings just how I feel. I pray so much for everyone to find what I did, and praise God for the people who never stopped praying for me! Lovely hymn and I thank you for posting it.

@JennTim08 well you never know,you know the bible say that NO man is promised tomorrow,and the raptuior could take place today tomorrow or next year we never know! BUT one thing we do know for SURE is that jesus loves us he will be with us through all we go through,iam 16 going on 17 and i have been saved for about 5 years i reasurred my salvation this past summer at a church camp i went to.

I felt the same thing when I was first saved about 10 years ago.... :) My worship leader told us last night that a writer of this song wrote this song when he found out his four children died after a ship crash and the only survivor was his wife. He was actually on his way to see his wife after he heard the tragic news

@SusDgs I'm 58 and this has been a favorite for my whole family since I was very young. My grandfather did not get saved until in his 70's. Yet this was a song that seemed to speak to him in a very real way also. I praise God for you and will remember you in my prayers.

@SusDgs nice to see His work on your life. I am now very sad and seem no way to go because hospital fee for my Daddy (60 years old). He have "Brain hemorrhage" and recover ability is very bad. This song encourage me so much. Please pray for my dad's soul. I believe that God will solve my burden if it is too heavy....

Praise the Lord! The Lord saved me in July/2010 at 39 years old. My husband prayed for me for over 19 years. Thank the Lord that He does not put an age limit on saving souls! THERE IS HOPE for ANYONE! This gives me so much hope for my 60 year-old mom and 67 year-old dad.

Some of Gods people prayed for nearly 30 years for my salvation 12 years ago. No wall is too high or too strong for God to overcome. Great is our God!
