  • What I love about watching her in these clips, is how she start off, kinda subdued, just eases her way into it, and before you know it, she takes off like a 747!!! She gets to clappin and stompin, and throwin her head . . . and it's a WHOLE new experience inside of the same song!!! SHE WAS A JEWEL!!!

  • @binstence That was Sallie Martin, but she was not his wife. She was his secretary. You are correct however, he is the Father of Gospel Music.

    RareElvispresley com

  • Her voice never aged..even when she did...TIMELESS!!!!!!!!!

  • @khalil4ulove in all kindness I am laughing right now....think New Orleans dialect when listening to Mahalia....she clearly says "Golden Crown" not "stolen crown"....nothing deep, now spirit, just old fashioned country, New Orleans dialect. No doubt about it....Mahalia was the greatest.

  • @TheTowodisharpe I have to agree with you.

  • I know Mahalia meant "I'm going to put on my starry crown". However when you hear her it sounds like she said she was going to put on her "stolen crown".... I wonder if Mahalia meant that or the spirit wanted us to hear that?

  • @khalil4ulove in all kindness I am laughing right now....think New Orleans dialect when listening to Mahalia....she clearly says "Golden Crown" not "stolen crown"....nothing deep, now spirit, just old fashioned country, New Orleans dialect.

  • What an amazing talent! The joy she exuded!

  • It cracks me up how Sallie Martin is trying to behave herself. She know she want to shout! lol

  • @bullycatmom Who's Sallie Martin?

  • @ezikah Sallie Martin is at 1:54. She was a gospel singer and an even better business woman from my understanding. She had her own group and did much work with Thomas Dorsey. There is a great video on here with the two of them in their latter years. Her voice had a gruffness to it but I love the sound. She was not a Mahalia. She was who God created her to be, Sallie Martin! Check her out on here. I think you will enjoy her.

  • @bullycatmom I found the one you're talking about. I laughed my ass off!!!! God Bless Them Both!!!

  • @ezikah wasn't that great lol!

  • @bullycatmom Probably the most pure, most humble thing I've ever seen anywhere. No pretension. No arrogance. No pride. Most people wouldn't understand this at all. I loved it.

  • @ezikah You are so right. Nothing to cover up it was all talent and she believed what she sang. Your channel is pretty eclectic! I think I saw about everything except a little Kathleen Battle. LOL I will be visiting it often!

  • @ezikah If Mahalia Jackson was the queen of Gospel; Willie Mae Ford Smith the progenitor or stylist setter of the "traditional solo Gospel singing style; Sallie Martin is the Mother of Gospel.

  • How interesting, thank you so much for this information. I had a friend that lived in Chicago, he would always share stories like this. I would order music back in the day from Martin and Morris Music Company. I always felt when I had to call about something, it was Sallie Martin on the other end. She was always pleasant, do you know if that was her?

  • Her Hair Looks the same from the "How I got Over" Video

  • I like seeing "Sallie Martin" (stripe suit, clapping) in the audience, that was nice! I'm sure this video was filmed just around the time Mahalia died!

  • @Hightea22

Yes I believe this was taped during the last summer before she died. About the footage of Sallie; She had requested Mahalia to ask Flip Wilson if she could be on the show, but due to time constraints they couldn't. But they were willing to give her two seconds as seen here, LOL!

  • The spirit of the Lord rushed through that studio so much that even Flip Wilson couldn't jest about having church.

  • I remember seeing this it was on the Flip Wilson show. Sing Mahalia!

  • LMBO!!! mahalia be gettin down in this video!!! lol and i love the hair thats 4 her lol go girl she actin like she 20 yo in this vid lol love you girl!!!

  • That's just the spirit coming out of her it's natural for a fast beating Gospel song like this one.

  • I often find myself wondering how Mahalia felt toward the end of her life, in her final few years, when she was only in her late 50s. Her beloved Dr. King had died in 1968 and her own health was failing. Did she feel discouraged? Possibly. But she kept going on, strong in her faith in God and always wanting to uplift and encourage others through her music and ministry. Here we are, nearly four decades after her death, still being uplifted. It's as though she never really left.

  • I love how, somewhere around in the introduction of her biography, it describes her thinking that a certain television studio wanted to send her (literally) into space like an astronaut. Of course they didn't but it goes on to say that at that time late in her life after all of her accomplishments, there wasn't much left on Earth for her to do!

  • Mahalia transformed Gospel music but she did something far greater in my estimation... She allowed future African-american singers Secular and sacred to share their music interpretations with the wide world when we were not in vogue.

  • She battled ALL of her life...... Her name Mahala w/o the 'i" means "sick" (check the Hebrew name dictionary for yourself). With the "i" in her name transformed into "Mahalia" her name means "melodious song" and "one who praises God"!!!!!

  • @PennTrafford

The life of faith in God "hold" you in times of disappointments..... She was famous as saying that she was made famous through suffering....

  • @PennTrafford the only important thing for me as that she will be remembered as long as humankind will exist, she is simply great, and nobody cares what did she do or did not do in her life

she made something that will put her to the musical enciklopedia, and that is what counts

  • @PennTrafford As long as we appreciate and listen she never will die in a sense, love her voice. :)

  • @PennTrafford I doubt whether that Mahalia knew the impact she would make and the countless generations that have come to learn not only about how triumphs in the style of gospel, but her impact on the Civil Rights movement and her support of Dr. King. In her later life she WAS very depressed plaqued with health problems. She continued to perform, sometimes going from bed to stage and vice versa. But she went on, as this is her last performance before her death in January 27, 1972

  • Mahalia was a pretty lady...

  • @BashaaniN wasn't she? Beautiful inside and out!

  • @BashaaniN yes she was

  • Is my eyes playing tricks on me or is that Sallie Martin at 1:52-1:58 clapping her hands and nodding her head?!

  • Yes, that's my girl, Sallie Martin. LOL

  • hhmm that is her!!

  • Thank you. Love Miss Mahalia. I'm blessed.

  • SING, MAHALIA,SING!!!!

  • THIS WAS THE LAST TV SHOW SHE DID

  • actually her appearance on the oral roberts show came after this, but i've never seen it...

  • Can someone re-post that clip please that one used to really minister to my soul.

  • i have the audio, would you like me to send it to you?

  • No thanks, I rather the video... As much as I love to hear Mahalia singing...there's no comparison to being able to experience her ministry with sound AND sight. Amen?

  • So true, and I would have had that video, but I was new to youtube and the whole downloading thing at the time. Basically, I did not know I could easily have downloaded the video on to my RealPlayer... But now I do know and I do it all of the time!

  • Those final notes always set my feet to Holy Ghost running. She really still had it at the end of her career. What ever happened to the "Just A Closer Walk" clip from this same episode of the Flip Wilson Show?

  • Thats Sallie Martin at 1:54

  • I LOVE THIS!!!!! INCREDIBLE!!

  • From the heart...

  • I can't wait until i study war no more!!! AMEN!

  • I love Ms. Mahalia Jackson. It gets no better than this. I love the way she sings from the heart without all that extra music and background singers, just straight singing. What a gospel singer she was. R.I.P

  • I LOVE the way she moves when she says, "Gonna put on my golden shoes!" Go'head!!

  • This 1971 performance shows the world that Mahalia still had it. I love it.
