this album was my introduction to Nine Inch Nails and to be honest...I didn't really care for the album that much (though there were some great tracks on it)

It wasn't until I heard "The Downward Spiral" where I really got hooked onto listening to them

and I still consider this album to be their weakest, maybe because I always found this song to be a weak album opener. On its own, however, its a good song

It's really a test of mine. Whether people like Nine Inch Nails. If they say yes, we'll be friends because I know they aren't affected by the general opinions of others. Everyone I have ever made listen to NIN, I mean really listen, falls in love instantly. So when I ask a stranger and they say no, I've found out more than they think they've told me. In this song the love is all the 'attention' 'heads-up' and 'succes' someone else is getting and fulfilling.

So other than that it's quitte irrelevant to compare 'love' with 'back then' which is also just the definition you want it to be.

If you listen to the lyrics, he's talking about loneliness and feeling out of place, as if he doesn't belong anywhere. He also talks about feeling great with someone else nearby. It seems more like he's feeling rejected and ignore, while the object of his admiration and love continues to get more love. It has nothing to do with greed, fascism, or religion.
