@wimpylassiter2336 It should just be said that this was neither Waits nor Hislop's finest moment. But who actually remembers this anyway? (apart from us watching it)
Nothing against Hislop personally, he's done alot of fine work - but I do hate the presumption that he had with Waits that he was on drugs or was drunk. Waits has his own persona, he has always played that kind of role, he was well known for that kind of delivery...lets just say he didn't treat a HUGE talent with much respect. Just pissed me off a bit.
@xXTheSockRockerXx He is quite eccentric though(Tom Waits), and that extreme within a person's character can lead you to assuming that he was on something, particularly when you have Ian Hislop, a straitlaced, moralising, conservative man who probably has no idea who Tom Waits is (due to his shunning of popular culture).
Don't get me wrong, I like both! They just had a bad day...

Tom waits has actually done something artistically interesting and unique with his life. Ian Hislop is a jumped up over educated public school boy who has to cling to generic panel shows to get his face on TV. People will allways remember Tom Waits, Hislop on the other hand, will be forgotten as soon as he is gone.
There seems to be this assumption that Ian is attacking Tom Waites' body of work or belittling his achievements..... He's attacking the fact that Tom Waites came off as rude. To me, personally, the whole thing looked like a misunderstanding, with faults on both sides, Waites IMO, was a bit rude and sulky, and Hislop could have phrased what he said a bit better.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yeah they were both abit off with each other. But im still gonna defend the point that Waites will be remembered as an exponent of the music indistry. Ian Hislop IS a tory public school boy, you cant deny that. Have you seen the damage little tory school boys have done to this country in the past ?
A little Tory public schoolboy who has always been critical of the Tory party and particularly Margeret Thatcher, who probably did the most damage, I'm not upper class myself, I'm a plumber (With currently shaky work prospects), but I've alwaqys felt Hislop is very honest and good at exposing the bullshit of politicians and tabloid media. I personally don't judge people by what school they went to. Its their actions that count.
Hislop remains impartial in his politics, although he is a liberal if anything. Indistry is spelt INDUSTRY. And yes, those public school tories messed everything up... Churchill for example. please die
Funny stuff. I have to say that knowing a fair bit about Tom Waits it's extremely unlikely that he was high as Ian Hislop suggests here. Certainly, he doesn't appear to be in the least bit. That is, as all Waits fans will know, his usual demeanor, at least back then. The irony is that Tom is extemely eloquent when he wants to be and he is clearly annoyed by the events earlier in the programme. His unabashed admission that he is there simply to plug his album shows how eager he is to just get out
Regardless of Hislops politics, he does come across as aloof, condesending upper class twit-which, in essence, is what he is. Waits wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire. Waits worked to get where he is, Hislop got the public school boy ticket
Mmm on the other hand ian is witty funny smart politically astute honest & knows when to speak up so people can hear him he's fantastic. Btw ian is middle class not upper class & to become an editor of a magazine like Private Eye at 26 you need more than cash. Waits is a pretenious wanker!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Waits is a pretenious wanker? You are nuts. The fact that you defended a "middle" class twit over a working class one is noted. youre obviously a middle class wanker. get ti ferck
What is "ti ferck"? I don't see that just because someone's working class i have to like them even though they're a pretentios wanker, so arrogant they think they can come on stage sit with their back to the audience, whisper & then be rude to the interviewer. I'm actually a socialist & your logic would mean i's have to prefer Norman Tebbit to Tony Benn & there's just no way. I like Ian's wit, charm, honesty & principle & i don't care if what class he's from he's a great guy!
I like how you talk about all these people as if you knew them personally. As for 'being rude to the interviewer', If you bothered to do the slightest bit of research you would see how incredibly rudely Tom Waits was treated on this show from the begining. The audience in fact shouted obscenities at Tom earlier in the show (unprovoked) about which the interviewer did nothing. By the time of this clip Waits is pissed off about the treatment he has recieved, lathough he handles it with decorum.
Nah but i know he's great because i read Private Eye (best magazine out there bar none) and have seen him on various shows. Sadly some of my mates get stoned and i have to listen to their inane drivel so yer i do know. To be honest it is hardly Ian's fault that the guy is unpopular with the crowd in another part of the show, if he's plugging his record he could at least make sure the audience can hear him, there was no excuse to take it out on Ian who then made a prat of him.

That's what I was saying. He was simply told to say something my the producers. And he uses what he has been given to do his best. And class barely fucking exists anymore, get outta the past. I doubt you work in a fucking sweatshop.
Indeed, I'm a plumber myself, went to a bog standard comprehensive, and I'm pretty liberal, but I can mix with pretty much any crowd, I don't care about your background, IH went to a posh school and uni? That doesn't automatically make him evil.
"Can I suggest you plug it a bit louder" says Hislop- "I'll plug it my own dammed way" say Waits- Ive lost respect for IH and gained even more for TW. I bet IH feels even more of a pretentious twat now. Dicks on the show should have done a sound check.
It wasn't that he was quiet so much as he was mumbling and they couldn't understand him. Fair enough but of course it was dealt with in a hilariously unproffesional way. It actually reminds me of the French episode of Knowing Me knowing You with Alan Partridge utterly unable to deal with his guests professionaly.
You haven't actually heard anyone that is 'high' speak have you? I've seen lots of 'high' people and Tom Waits is very obviously not 'high' here. In fact in the earlier part of this show he was very witty and sharp You've also never heard Tom Waits speak. If you did you'd know that he always sounds like that. He has a schtick that he performs. It's part of his act. But these guys, like yourself, are totally unaware of it and are thoroughly unproffesional. Frankly, they make fools of themselves.

Ian is great, because he is unbiased by hating all politicians evenly, as he's smart enough to know they're all frauds.
And he has enough of a following to make a bit of a difference on how people think because he knows his stuff, and knows how to make people react.
