Considering that "The Stake" came out in 1977 and "Rocky Mountain Way" came out in 1986, I would think it would be Steve Millers attorney that would want to know "What's up"?
In response to JustAintthatWay...It would've been a waste of money for Walsh to contact his attorney. You can't copyright chords. Lyrics & melody only. Both songs are so-so, anyway.
I addressed this question some months ago. After much careful deliberation, I have to say that although Joe Walsh demonstrates a more mature sounding guitar playing ability, Steve Miller has a better song.
Both are 70's icons and fantastic artists in their own right, I can't say one is better than the other but I would love to see them play the two songs off each other, Joe Walsh is enough of a comedian to do it and make it a blast. Maybe some day at the rock and roll rest home.

You my friend are absolutely right and I was wrong. I am humbled and I bow to your rock trivia knowledge. I should have gotten my facts straight. :)

"Rocky Mountain Way" came out way before 1986. Both great songs, but I like Miller's song better.

This epitomizes 70's music in a great American way.
Zep was Zep, Who was Who, Stones were Stones as the Beatles faded.
Talk about surviving the test of time?
This is it!

It is essentially the same riff, with the exception of 2 chords.

I'd love to see Steve Miller play this with Joe Walsh and Rock Mountain Way, it's almost the same riff

Saw Walsh with Thorogood and is top 10 of all time (saw 100's).
