I had an argument with a friend, He said the 'Squeeze' was dated, I replied that if they magically appeared on the scene today they would be hailed as being a great new band and any of their singles would rocket up the charts. 'Argy Bargy" was the first album I ever bought. Loved it then, and still do to this day.
I'm new here in, so allow me the simple question: what the hell has happened to Jools Holland? Why didn't he go on making music, instead of pushing it?
I love this tune so much! You don't get rythms like this anymore nowadays every song is some computer sound repeated over and over again while some girls sings in a fake voice.
@brotatopineapple Since 1981, with a guy I went 2 high school, and 2 guys I worked with, we've had a band played music off and on. Sadly, we lost our bassist to OD in 2004. Anyway, we had decent chops, especially after the first 5-10 yrs, but we never tried to play music we couldn't do justice to. Zappa would be one, Squeeze is also on that list. Its all in the arrangement and parts. Sounds deceptively simple, but nay, nayyyy.
Does anyone know why in the early days of videos on MTV, the pitch is always altered down about a half step? I've been noticing this a lot, as I look and listen back on many of these older videos. This one is particularly slow, actually.
After 43 years of music listening I will firmly say that I believe that this song is #1 on my all time favorites list. Perfectly constructed no matter the angle of examination!
Great song, but I don't think much of the video. Most of it is too washed out to be able to see. And if you're going to rely on pushing around a piano to provide either atmosphere or plot, you might as well make it interesting.
See Squeeze @ Greenwich Summer Sessions 2011 on July 29th in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College. Tickets from greenwichsummersessions.co.uk...local boys back in town going to be AMAZING!!!
this song brings back great memories of my youth. saw squeeze with elvis costello at rutgers in 1980 while still in high school. great show, great band.
@doggymcnuggets Yes. Even better is that the guitar solo comes so early in the song, immediately after the first chorus. The element of surprise adds to the pleasure.
I saw this band towards the end of the 90's? at UCSD in the auditorium. There were only hundreds of people instead of thousands. My friend & I were leaning on the stage & being blown away. At that time it was the original 3 vocals being the keys, bass & guitarist. Never got into Squeeze til I wound up with Squeeze Singles which I wound up playing to death. The concert was GREAT & they stayed & bullshitted with the crowd for a bit. Fantastic experience & they ROCKED! A great memory, for sure.
Wow, I'd entirely forgot how good this band was. Who would've thought that even in England they made good music once. Of course those days are long gone.
Ok, I have played five songs from Squeeze back to back.....Starting with Hourglass. Firstly, why were they only a "one hit wonder" in the States? I am not sure if any members left? How long have they been playing? But, dang....They are GREAT! Also, I think....just a melodic hunch....Robert Smith and the Cure was greatly inspired by this band's sound....This had a "Cure" sound. Well, now I can say Cure has a Squeeze sound :) Interesting morning.
overall the pub was and is r and b rock n roll pop business so im not really against that but were going through a new age phase of business right now if we want to improve the economy for sure
I saw these guys in Liverpool last week. Absolutely brilliant. They were supported by The Lightning Seeds who weren't half bad either. It was a real nostaligia trip.
@MOTOPAC Yeah, it found it's way into a lot of player's hands. They were great guitars, very well built and weighed a ton. I didn't own one, but played several in stores and shops back in the day. I'd most certainly play one today, they're still a wonderful guitar, kind of a "super SG".
In case you don't know, the guy pushing the piano & playing the bartender in the bar scenes is Jools Holland. He has a show on the BBC called Later with Jools Holland.
@AliveTonyMaggie a warm welcome from the uk. i hope you enjoyed the gig. i like you grwe up with their fantastic music. give me tilbrook and difford any day, song writers and musicians extrodinaire. over the years i've been fortunate enough to see them at many venues.,also at small gigs in pubs, i've had the pleasure to talk to both glen and chris as well as the rest of the band on many occasions, they are the most unpretensious guys you would ever want to meet, very approachable. take care.
jools holland is national embarrassment...he just gatecrashes the video and the song...who needs his limited boogy-woogy piano anyway? he carved a worthless tv career out of pointless cameos with this forgotten (but interesting) band...oh - he's so zany! so he's like the bloke from cabaret without any talent....quick, let's hire him! i'm guessing he has the same agent as jonathon ross and ross's wife...
God I love this band! My parents used to play their greatest hits tape in the car when I was little and I got hooked. They deserve more popularity here in the United States for sure.
Squeeze, the most clever band ever. Giving new meaning to the phrase music and lyrics. Oh Yea! Argybargy blows everyone out of the water. Listen to Pulling Mussels from A Shell. Oh man these guys were so cool.
Very slick group, pros...Difford knew enough to put Tillbrook out front, where all the girls would get excited...But Difford wrote the lyrics, and probably a good bit of the music also...This said, Tillbrook had a great voice, played good guitar, too...The combination of the two voices and their two brains made the band what it is/was.
Love that nifty guitar solo. Geez that great period from about 1978 - 1983. What can I say? Does anyone besides me wish they could just experience a mere shower and shave during that era just once again?

How much do I love this band?
I wore out 3 copies of "Argybargy" on vinyl, and I'm on my 2nd copy of the CD.
One of the greatest, and most overlooked, bands of all time as far as I'm concerned

Squeeze, Sparks, XTC all overlooked and underappreciated.
