This is the oath in German. In case anyone is curious.

  • how the hell can one man control not just a country, but an entire people, a military machine?

  • "I swear by God this sacred oath: That I shall render unconditional obedience to Adolf Hitler Fuhrer of the German Reich and people, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, And that I shall at all times be ready, as a brave soldier, to give my life for this oath..."

  • 4:49 DAT-ASS

  • The generall is Theoden :D

  • Did German supply trucks really explode like that under fire? American ones were known to (because they were filled with gasoline), but didn't German trucks use diesel?

  • I wish that happened to Tom Cruise in real life

  • @TheLastMonarch Oh I'm a big Bernard Hill fan, I loved him in the 1983 BBC Shakespeare Henry VI. Great actor!

  • King Theodin? Not only did you Captain the Titanic, but you also fought for Germany in WWII

  • What is the captain of the Titanic doing here?

  • @octopusmagnificens hahaha lol :D

  • Are those planes P-40s? Because if I'm correct the British and Americans used P-40s in North Africa.

  • @andrewwatson39 You are correct, they are P-40s and they were indeed used by both the british and americans in North Africa :-)

  • "In serving my country, I have betrayed my conscience"

  • 4:12

  • the SS were only badass to me because their uniforms

  • They were Never badarse they were evil and terrible people but the uniforms did look good i have to admit.

  • @picman138 Nobody included in this video is from the SS...

  • @picman138 the wermachtsunfiorms were nearly the same

  • 1:37 When he ends with "...honor of the German Army." he spoke, "Deutschen Wehrmact." Shouldn't he have said, 'Heer' since that was the name of the German 'Army' since 'Wehrmact' meant 'military' in general? Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • @Rune31 No Wehrmacht is right.

  • Nazi salute fail at: 4:08

  • @sterilizer69

The classic salute of the Wehrmacht. Similar to the American salute.

  • The best army was the WAFFEN SS!

  • KING THEODEN!!!! RALLY THE ROHIRRIM!!!!

  • 4.08 thats an American salute not a German one. Does anyone know why they did this? Or is it a misstake?

  • @lewisself the German Army would usually salute like the American one, the Waffen SS would have to salute the Nazi style.

  • @lewisself In fact, they are both the same. Like many troops across the world. He could have maid anzi salute but as he is against it, he prefered the traditionnal salute of the army.

  • So what is the difference? When joining the Royal Australian Navy, didnt I personally swaear an oath to the queen?

  • @Gollie53 It's far more chilling because Hitler was such an evil, twisted being looking back on it. I'm sure it was nothing out of place to the German soldiers back then.

  • My grandfather did the oath to Hitler, so he could fight communism. If not, the Waffen-SS didnt want to, they would send u home. (germans would be transfered to the wehrmacht)

  • The translation of the Wehrmacht Oath to Hitler is incorrect, but it was such an excellent way to open the film that it hardly matters. No offense to anyone who speaks German.

  • Listening to the opening oath that the army chants... When I first saw the movie, I was focused on the qualities of the filming, because I was writing a review on it... but now that I've watched it for entertainment, hearing the German army say that oath... not declaring loyalty to the Fuhrer, the Chancellor, or Germany, but to Adolf Hitler himself... it was strange to me. It also horrifies me.

  • @Cdc321 They simply had no choice. Everyone had to swear this oath. Those who rejected were killed or taken to jail. This darkest and most oppressive dictatorship worked perfectly, even against all germans. Every American and English learns about the atrocities of the nazis, but no one takes a closer look on how the this system really worked. It was a perfect mashine to control a whole nation. No more freedom, no choices, just orders.

  • For Rohan!

  • @FREAKNIZZLE100 And the World Ending!!!!!!!

  • haha the opening credits was the best part of the movie....

  • KITTYHAWKS!

  • for me as a german it was a little bit strange to listen to Tom Cruise speaking german language in the opening but he did it really well.

    Great movie!

  • @Lintflas I couldn't tell whether it was him speaking, or a German who sounded like Tom Cruise. Did you know, that they almost didn't let filming take place in Germany because of him?

  • @Cdc321 It was him who spoke german. Yes, there were some problems because of his membership of Scientology. Tom Cruise tries to cozy up with germans to make promotion for his cult. Our constitution protection watches Scientology because they want to make Germany their centerpoint in Europe,

but besides this Cruise did a great job and the movie was carefully prepared.

  • THe US army need to be like the german army obedidient and ready to follow orders

  • Fark !!

  • The very opening where you hear the German troops all reciting their 'sacred oath' sent an inhuman chill down my spine...

  • You hit the nail on the head.

  • ano

  • @SemperFidelius34 Just imagine to be a german soldier who rejects this oath. Guess what they would have done to you. Hell is just a lovely fairyland in comparison to that.

  • @SemperFidelius34

Oath...it's more like a toneless dirge that binds the oathtakers with an inhuman rope of evil.

  • @SemperFidelius34 Why inhuman? This sort of stuff is very human.

  • I agree with yuo ilmaistro.

The oath is indeed very compelling...catches your attention and creates an awsome tone.

  • was that rommels take outfit? i think this is the best part of the movie

  • Great movie. The only thing that went wrong in their plan was the placement of the explosive. A huge Oak table shielded Hitler from the blast. Also, the room of the meeting was changed, and the room where it was held had more ventilation and allowed blast to escape

  • agreed great movie but the attack was not in a bunker,it was in a theater where hitler and mussolini were speeching.they left the room 2 minutes before the bomb explode

  • you are thinking of a different plot...

  • @lordvader12 No fail. It wasnt in a bunker or theater. It was outside in a little wooden building

  • intense at 5:10-5:23

  • The oath is so paralyzing, so intense, in the theater it was impressive, incredible and amazing, world war II just doesnt stop amazing me at all.

  • agreed

  • I can imagine. I heard it on Blu-ray and I couldn't help but be amazed by it.

  • @ilmaistro Same Here Bro.

  • @ilmaistro this is actual oath, /watch?v=VOMb6sbH59E , it starts at 00:48, its impressive too

  • Amazing. This is the best bit in the entire movie.

  • he went to africa?

  • Stauffenberg was transferred in early 1943 to the 10th Panzer Division, which was supposed to cover General Erwin Rommel's retreat in North Africa. Severely wounded on April 7, 1943, Stauffenberg was flown back to Germany before the German troops in Africa surrendered.

  • @raproducer makes u glad that after hitler took paris he took a break and that they were slow in buliding better weapons o.o

  • Stauffenberg also served in Poland and on the Eastern Front. The Eastern Front was where he first became aware of the atrocities that Hitler, the SS, and the Einsatzgruppen were doing.

  • Many German officers and soldiers in the Wermacht weren't aware or were only hearing rumours about the murder of the jews, many of the senior officers had no problem with the jews at all (I recently read Colonel Hans Von Luck's memoirs).. The SS was responsible for carrying out the murder of the jews, they ran the camps, and their officers and ranks were filled with young fanatical trainees eager to eliminate the jews

  • Most of them had more important things to worry about, such as the red army..

  • did he get shot in the eye?

  • No he was wounded by shrapnel when he was attacked by RAF Hurricanes he lost 2 fingers as well..

  • In the movie his unit was attacked my RAF P-40 Kittyhawks

  • One hell of a opening scene. I am looking forward to watching it now.

  • ok, well if the action and violence turned you on, then i dont think the movie is for you. Other than this, there are only like 2 other scenes. just informing you. :) I still loved it though.

  • Oh, no you always need a effective opening scene. I am just interested into seeing all these Nazis planing the assassination, and see how it all went wrong.

  • i like the nazi oath part... makes me wanting to join the NSDAP... LOL... joking

  • i was really excited about this film, and the begginning oath took my attention in a vice, then it went down from there...

  • yep, same here.

  • The oath was relevant in that the Germans PERSONALLY devoted themselves to Hitler PERSONALLY. (shiver shiver)

  • The SS oath swore undying loyalty to Hitler.

    SS oath:

"I swear unswerving loyalty to Adolf Hitler. I swear uncondtional obedience to him and to the leaders that he determines for me. Adolf Hitler: Sieg Heil (hail victory)!"

  • badass

  • I don't know. The one from Starship Troopers was pretty cool.

  • Powerful movie. Great casting, lots of well-respected (if not famous) actors. The opening recitation of the oath made me feel sick to my heart (and sick to my stomach). It didn't wear off til the end of the movie.

  • @Qandisha I know. It's a scary thought, isn't it? Swearing undying loyalty to possibly the most evil man in history?

  • Great movie is all i can say, its very emotional even though most characters are steely, it portrays the sick nature of the true nazis and the bravery of the true germans who fought back at this cruelty.
