Nice realist/impressionistic work. Actually better than most as your trees are believable and natural. Lots of artists would do well to study how you do your trees. Also the way you hold your brush is very good training for beginners. This is a very good and useful video.
The initial block-in was thinned down with a combination of mineral spirits (oderless thinner) and Galkyd medium. It's been a while but I likely brush-mixed the thinner into the paint mixes on the palette. As I added more layers I used less and less medium and more straight paint.
Thanks. Yeah, I recorded it with one of those little round web cams. I've got a regular camcorder now - just need to find time to record and post more. :)
i just uploaded a video of an oil painting that took me 5 months to finish.
i would like to get some feedback on it. so if everyone that reads this could check it out and let me know what you think it would help me out! the video is called -- monumental oil painting- from start to finish. thanks everyone!
lol....i feel like i need to pay you....well i find myself coming back to your work over and over for reference in my own paintings....i do have two more questions for you.....how long did it take to complete this painting...and do you wait for the first layer of underpainting to dry before adding the next layer...?...well regardless of all my questions, i am truly just a big fan....love your style...thanks for sharing...
Seems like it might have been 2 - 2 1/2 hrs. No, the under layers were wet. To lay wet paint over wet paint it helps to hold the brush near-parallel to the canvas, as opposed to holding it like a pen.
duh...sorry i am being annoying now.....but i just realized your title says landscape OIL painting...man your paints sure do go on smooth just like acrylic.....do you prime your canvas with anything first..? do you use thick or thin oils...?
Yes it's oil (alkyd actually). I had the paint thinned down with transparent medium at first (almost like watercolor) and built up the darks. Then I began adding white and using more opaque layers.
well as you can see i have found more of you....i truly love your work....this looks like acrylic paints, am i correct in saying so....do you prefer oils or acrylic..?

You're not annoying me at all. :-)

Very nice. What mediums are you using on this?

A combination of mineral spirits and Galkyd. More of the m. spirits during the earlier transparent block-in. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks. I use oil and acrylic and like working with both of them. This one's oil (thinned down at the beginning).
