Great speech it is so true on the way we view ourselves, we all want to be number one and the disappointment is overwhelming when we find out that we are the same as everyone we just want to be heard.
You left out coupledom. Finding meaning and stimulation (at least sexual) one on one as a way to get away from whatever - anomie, community, meaninglessness, busyness/business, ten idleness (middle class), teen drudgery (working class).
Talking has lost its power to some extent, unless it is with peers, where talking is often minimalist. Talking is not a way to find out about other world - generationally, ethnically, politically, culturally.
