Whats with everyone talking about heel strike. Its impossible to not have an impression of heel striking in those shoes. THE HEEL IS ALMOST AN INCH LOWER THAN THE FRONT OF THE SHOE. Haile needs a zero drop shoe, then we can talk
The most perfect runner in the world and look how close he is to heel striking. I think it is safe to say that most of us normal people are going to have a little bit of normal heel striking.
@IoSonoIoProprioIo the shoe he wears is not important. if his form is good (and it is by no means perfect; bounces and does not land completely under his body) and he has had no injuries then there's no logic to switching shoes
He's not running he's hopping! :) That is the advantage of being lightweight, is that you have a longer distance off the ground time. I bet his is around 3 inches in every stride.
The most dominant runner in history in my opinion; whereas sprinters have a 4 to 8 year window, Haile has been running amongst or atop the world's elite distance runners for well over 20 years. I sometimes wonder if he is a mere mortal or some kind of visiting angel floating across bitumen like it's air.
People really don't understand how fast he actually runs... If people praise soccer players, which aren't even fit at all when comparing to runners, people should worship Haile. His achievements are just out of this world.
@HugRunner So, so true. He said before in an interview he literally can't run slower than 7:00/mile. Thats crazy to think about. His lazy ass P.E. style jog would be sub 7:00, which is faster than most of people can run a 5K at and faster than your typical H.S cross country runner does for most of his standard runs.
Pretty sure his easy jogging/everyday pace is deep into the mid or low 5:00's.
@ypperlig89 that's heel-striking, "midfoot" at best. The effect is the same as heel-striking because that's where the shock goes. The metatarsals can't do their job unless the forefoot strikes first.
Watch Kenenisa Bekele on the track and you'll see a much more efficient strike.
@kozmon0t I recommend you ask someone in your close proximity with knowledge. It will take long if I have to write why Hailes running technique is different when he runs a marathon compared to a 10k and why he doesn't land on his heels. Also a factor: His running shoes.
@ypperlig89 If you're gonna troll, try not to sound like such a nerd. I've got eyes, I can see him landing on his heels.
His shoes are a "factor" only in that they ruin his form.
Watch the heels of a barefoot runner and you'll gain some amazing new knowledge about footstrikes, natural form, and how shock is absorbed efficiently without wasting energy.
I was just reading a new study that seems to indicate that heel striking may be OK but would require an awful lot of training. The problem is thus not the heel strike itself but just that we recreational runners can just not achieve the level of training required for a proper heel strike.
@runlevel0 you can land heel first and not put your weight down. You have to land with your shin bone point straight down or slightly toward the rear. A true heel strike looks nothing like this video. If Haile was wearing a zero drop shoe he probably would have to extend more in front of him to not let the foot dorsiflex to far. In other words, he would notice a huge gap between his heel and the ground at impact.
