Gamefishing techniques have improved over the years to ensure the best possible mortality rates of our sportsfish after release, and 99% of fish go back with scientific research tags. It can be dangerous, but it is a risk we sportsfisherman take for a great sport. Nobody deserves being impaled by a fish, end of story.

By the end of it those creatures are exhausted; if they don't die after limping away, most certainly they're greatly compromised in their ability to fight-off a Mako or even escape from such predators. Given how many marlin Miss-Popped-Tit has killed, she got some justice.

Civility separates us from the animals :) I have fished for marlin off Sydney on and off for the past 11 years (150 odd released, 3 dead), and the mortality rates of marlin are quite low given that the crew keep fight time to a minimum and revive the fish properly (2 fish recaptured from our tagging efforts). Longliners rape the fishery more than recreational anglers, that is what is decimating this beautiful sportsfish's population. And getting eaten, well unfortunately thats mother nature...

May I also add, in that time I have done sportfishing, I haven't had a marlin eaten by a shark boatside and the 3 fish that died were because 2 fish had become tangled in the leader and one fish wanted to be taken by the angler. We, like 90% of the sportsfishing fleet, are tag and release fisherman who care about our fish and future of the fishery :)
