  • Being a traditional Dutch Shantyman myself and a great lover of jazz-funk I have to admit,THIS is Great! My compliments. Adrian

  • Really Great!!

  • The song is much better done as a proper shanty... To me this is messing about with a song for the sake of it.

  • maybe the greatest band about today

  • the trombone player teaches me

  • awesome english folk.......it lives!!!!

  • that is incredibly fast! Boden does well considering! lol love it

  • I was under the impression it was a capstan work song, so you wouldn't it to be too slow!

If they had this lot singing it on board, then everything would be done pretty sharpish!

  • @AltheFolker

It was originally a type of Sea Shanty (that is said to be influenced by African field hollers/chants). Africans were both influenced by Sea Shanties and influenced them alike.

  • Whoah, weird progression:

From a textual reference in an 1850s book, where the author (Charles Nordhoff) heard cotton screwers in Mobile Alabama screwing cotton...

To a mention in Stan Hugill's 1961 book on sea shanties...

To the fabricating of a tune and recording by the Young Tradition...

to the acceptance of the song as traditional sea shanty, ready to be mixed with other influences by this talented group!

It all goes back to Mobile, Alabama...

  • I love Disco Sea Shantys!!!

  • I'm looking to seeing these chaps in a week.

  • I'm 14 and think this is great!

    I'm hooked.

  • I saw Bellowhead today at the Southbank food festival. What an amazing band!!Never heard of this English folk music before, but a great sound. Oh and Jon Boden is hot!!

  • The main singer looks like my A-level music teacher... and they're both from Sheffield!!!! Coincidence?

  • he has a name!!! lol he is not "the main singer" he is jon boden! lolz

  • shame my violin teacher didn't look anything like Jon - I might have got past grade 5!

  • they are a fantastic folk band but a punk edge a la the pogues ad gogol bordello would push em into the strtosphere XD
