If you account for the multiple hours of salaries for police and government employees needed to track taggers, costs to respond to phone calls from concerned citizens, costs of judges/baliffs and public defenders who defend taggers who can't afford a lawyer, plus actual cleanup costs, it's not cheap.
A single town may not spend millions, but it adds up if you account for multiple cities/towns combined. The total cost is more than just getting rid of paint marks.
Law enforcement, courts, and government would still have plenty of job security without having to worry about taggers defacing other people's property. Now they have to add chasing down bored teens with paint cans to their workload when they could be doing other tasks.

This is a very excessive sentence - the guy admitted the crime and showed remorse - a fine + community service cleaning up graffiti would be a suitable punishment. 8 years in prison is ruining this guys life - he will come out with no job prospects and could well end up in a life of crime causing far more problems to society. A judge needs to take a rational approach to sentencing and in dishing out a vastly disproportionate, retributional sentence she demonstates incompetence and negligence.
This judge had a chance to show some compassion in this case and she didn't, she probably thinks this makes her look like she's tough on crime. She has no common sense and should not sit on a bench anywhere. We don't want judges who are too harsh on everyone just the ones that need it.

His charges were some drug charges AND graffiti related stuff, i dont know the extent of the drug charges, but he is 18 years old yes i was in the Marine Corps by then, but some kids dont have great role models and are STILL kids at that age, but in all honesty i wouldnt send this kid to prison, but he sure as hell would be cleaning up all that damage and he would be on nothing less than a year of community service followed by 4 years probation, that is more than fair reguardless of the drugs.

This is a very excessive sentence - the guy admitted the crime and showed remorse - a fine + community service cleaning up graffiti would be a suitable punishment. 8 years in prison is ruining this guys life - he will come out with no job prospects and could well end up in a life of crime causing far more problems to society. A judge needs to take a rational approach to sentencing and in dishing out a vastly disproportionate, retributional sentence she demonstates incompetence and negligence.

i admit it is harsh, but i live right near corpus christi and they have a very bad tagging problem. very very bad. kids and teens will go on huge sprees, spraying cars, schools, houses, stores ect. and when they are in groups it causes a lot of damage. Im not saying it wasnt a harsh punishment. maybe jail and pay the cost of damages, along with community service and probation afterwards. i am not really including the pot charges cuz that shouldnt be illegal in the first place.

Why not beat the kid bloody? Jail him for 6 months? Put a tag on him? Leash him? Break his teeth out? But 8 years is ridiculous. He's 18- he'll come out 26. He'll either be raped, made into someone's bitch, or initiated in a gang. And when this moron comes out, he'll be a dangerous thug, significantly worse to society.

His charges were some drug charges AND graffiti related stuff, i dont know the extent of the drug charges, but he is 18 years old yes i was in the Marine Corps by then, but some kids dont have great role models and are STILL kids at that age, but in all honesty i wouldnt send this kid to prison, but he sure as hell would be cleaning up all that damage and he would be on nothing less than a year of community service followed by 4 years probation, that is more than fair reguardless of the drugs.
