For those too young to have been there (or too lazy to do their research), Felt did arrive earlier on the indie scene before the Smiths, and Maurice Deebank preceded Johnny Marr as a key 80s guitar hero.
I love the Smiths, but Felt deserve their due credit!
There's actually 5 versions. This, the instrumental version "Sunlight Strings", thealbum version on "The Strange Idols Pattern and Other Short Stories", the Blanco Y Negro demo version (on the "Gold Mine Trash" compilation and the "Primitive Painters" reissue) and an early 1983 Deebank-less demo that only featured on French 7" test pressings of "Penelope Tree" - this demo has different lyrics)
i don't know whether i like this version or that with the strings! both are so so so lovely. glad i stumbled upon them but can't believe it took me so long to do so
@gerry6668 The Smiths came earlier than this song, but later than Felt as a band. The first Felt album was around 1981-82 and the style had been established there. The Smiths' first single was in 83.
Felt are in a league of their own. Where I grew up you had to pre-order records (vinyl) from the more obscure bands and wait for a week for delivery. That was the case with all Felt releases. Back then I would read about an unheard band, figure out if I would like it or not, order the album and hold my breath. More of a challange than today´s "click to order" I would say. I was never really disappointed though. More often so now.
the version with lots of strings is on the record pictured (12" single). the version we hear in this video is the version on the 'strange idols pattern' album.
Yeah. My friends and I were all into this band hugely in the late '80s, a bit after their heyday. They were utterly wonderful. Dozens and dozens of fantastic songs. And that guitar? Later, the organ was great too. Anyway, congratulations on your discovery. They are very rewarding indeed.
hard to believe these guys were hardcore punks at school in Birmingham.....great band

the vocal patterns of the verses sound a lot like "my face is on fire."

Nobody thinks about Just Like Heaven from The Cure ?
telemat 1 year ago
@telemat no I think we all know that The Cure have got nothing on FELT
emile235 1 year ago
@emile235 You know even Cure song "High" makes me think of "The World is as Soft as Lace", especially the rhythm guitar melody (the arpeggio)...
telemat 1 year ago
@telemat Correct, nobody thinks about The Cure when they listen to Felt. Why should they?
sharck968 1 year ago
@sharck968 Actually I wondered if Robert Smith wasn't influenced by this song to compose Just Like Heaven.
