When Dave arrived into Metallica, Hit the lights was barely a song, from how I understood it, it was just a rhythm + singing and Dave said that it needs more solos, and that's what he did, wrote solos. This is in no way my conclusion, I'm just repeating what Dave had said, in third person.

He did however have a crucial piece to play in Metallica's early sound, and I will always say that he was the best guitar player in the band. And I agree that James got a lot of the frontman touch off of Dave, James only really started to act like a bad boy after Dave was gone. But yeah, James got the aggressive rhythm sound from Dave.

@Langtw actually the thrash style was created by bands like motorhead and venom metallica put a crunch to it and got the ball rolling , megadeth sped it up and made it technical , slayer sped it up and made it heavier and anthrax made thrash more melodic and rhythm driven so it wasnt just one band who defined thrash it was 4 thus is why they are called the big 4

@bloodybastard25 Nah dude, he's right. There was a jamaican dude named Lloyd Grant who originally did the solo on the Metal Massacre version of Hit the Lights. Dave wasn't even in the picture at the time, he was still with Panic.
As for Dave writing Hit the Lights, HAHAHA NO. 6 of the 8 songs on Kill 'Em All were credited to Dave, which were Motorbreath, The Four Horsemen (Mechanix), Whiplash, Jump In the Fire, Seek & Destroy, and Phantom Lord. Hit The Lights and Anesthesia were new.

@zakkara1 You can definitely hear Mustaines influence. When heb left, the Thrashy sound dwindled and the more heavy crunch rythym guitar dominated their sound. Metallicas first two LPs have Mustaines influence all over them. They are more comparable to Megadeths sound than anything Metallica did. That said, I totally agree with your comment

@EdBraski0977 Hit the lights and Motorbreath was co-written- James Hetfield and Hugh Tanner(James' former bandmate). When Dave arrived into Metallica, Hit the lights was barely a song, from how I understood it, it was just a rhythm + singing and Dave said that it needs more solos, and that's what he did, wrote solos. This is in no way my conclusion, I'm just repeating what Dave had said, in third person.

@zakkara1 Actually Dave played no part in the original making of "Hit the Lights" he added solo's and stuff afterwards to all of the songs. He did however have a crucial piece to play in Metallica's early sound, and I will always say that he was the best guitar player in the band. And I agree that James got a lot of the frontman touch off of Dave, James only really started to act like a bad boy after Dave was gone. But yeah, James got the aggressive rhythm sound from Dave.
