Joe's a hilarious character. I watched him being interviewed on the TV some years ago.
He was, I think, wearing a cowboy hat, and remarked that being a tenor and singing in a high voice didn't seem very 'macho' to him, but laughed that women loved it, couldn't hear enough of it. So, he was more than happy with that! Of course, everyone likes a good song sung by a great tenor.
My father had a great voice and used to sing this my uncle and aunt were both on the stage so I guess the great voice he had ran in the family as i went on to do the same oh good memories
Thank you so very much for this,it brings back fond memories of my grandfather who sang it to his wife,my maternal grandmother. His name was Charles Wilson, who owned a bookshop in Liverpool. His wife, Kathleen, was involved with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She sang it once to me, after his sad passing,it still has the power to make me cry.
My MOM used to sing this to me when I was little and in my cot [I'd graduated from the bottom drawer of a chest of drawers]! I loved my childhood and I was happy. I wish I could go back there! This is melancholly but lovely.
@MichaelDPorter actually my old irish grandad hated this song and used to beat my old irish grandma and ma unmercifully for singing it; he preferred disco and rap.
(seriously: "my dad would sing this to me seated on our doorstep in sri lanka. i miss him." what the fuck was he doing in SL? Like the rest of the irish - in the age of cheap travel - get the fuck back there, stop singing about it.)
I join those who's dear old dad used to sing this beautiful song. dad passed away many years ago but I can still see and hear him singing such songs. may all our dads rest in peace. greeting to all.
reminds me of my mum and dad sing this at parties.they were well known for their singing.they both had lovely voices.now i hear this singing i can see my mother and
father singing it holding hands.that was 52 years ago.but the picture in my mind is still there.thank you.i have subbed you and as friend.
reminds me of my father singing in the bar reliving his glory days in the army. 1915-1918.he actually had an amazing voice.. in my 4 years in the navy 1941-1945 nobody had a better voice.
I'll take you home again, Kathleen Across the ocean wild and wide To where your heart has ever been Since you were first my bonnie bride. The roses all have left your cheek. I've watched them fade away and die Your voice is sad when e'er you speak And tears bedim your loving eyes. Oh! I will take you back, Kathleen To where your heart will feel no pain And when the fields are fresh and green I'II take you to your home again!
well, i can't say this brings back memories of ireland, as i've never been there.
however, it does bring back memories of the star trek episode when lt. riley shuts himself in the engine room and sings this song about 40 times over the intercom
My late dad loved this song and was always singing it. After my mum gave birth to three boys dad was finally able to name a daughter Kathleen. RIP Dad - and Josef.

@kathleencandace812 I don't know who first sang it, but it was written by an American school teacher called Thomas P. Westendorf in 1875. Apparently his wife had gone to visit relatives in another town and Westendorf, who had only just gotten married, wrote the song because he missed her. I don't know if the story is true but it ought to be.
he was a pal o fmine. A great drinker and a boon companion. At my requesthe belted the editor of the Daily Mirror, one Nener. I was with him in a Manchester pub when he decided to "disappear"
My great-grandfather, Sylvanus Graham, of St. Peters, Pennsylvania, born Nov. 7, 1855 and died March 30, 1942, loved this song. It was his favorite. Retired from the Reading Railroad in the 1920s. He would travel by train each summer to Buffalo to visit his daughter, my grandmother. He had a very old record of this song and he packed it in his suitcase and carried it with him on trips. I was almost 8 years old when he died. Thank you for posting this song.
my grandma used to sing all these old songs when she would have her girlfriends over for a few beers on a fri nite. they would start off w/ happy songs but by the end of the nite they'd all be crying over the sad ones. talking about over 50 yrs ago. great
This reminds me of my Grandad, a typical Irish man who loved the drink! He'd sing this to his sister Kathleen after a night out at the pub! A great voice he had!
my mum & dad have been dead for 20 years - she was named Kathleen & he used to hum this one to her - great to hear it again brings back so many memories
Thinking back to early 2000, visiting my dear old mam in her bungalow, listening to Joseph Locke last thing at night before I went home. But now she is nearly 84, she's been living in care homes since April 2000, and now she's suffering with Dementia. When I hear this music, and think back to those times it just brings tears to my eyes. I wish I was there again, with my old mam, listening to Joseph Locke, listening to "You are my Hearts Delight". Cos... where she is....I long to be.
Recently my NANs brother died and at the funeral they played this because this was his favourite song

To that dear home beyond the sea
My Kathleen shall again return.
And when thy old friends welcome thee
Thy loving heart will cease to yearn.
Where laughs the little silver stream
Beside your mother's humble cot
And brightest rays of sunshine gleam
There all your grief will be forgot.
willsandroses 11 months ago
I know you love me, Kathleen, dear
Your heart was ever fond and true.
I always feel when you are near
That life holds nothing, dear, but you.
The smiles that once you gave to me
I scarcely ever see them now
Though many, many times I see
A dark'ning shadow on your brow.

Beautiful singing. Josef was a much better tenor than he is often credited. Largely I suppose because he didn't sing operatic roles.
