It's clear what happened. Winter became an adult. His brother is his own newly arrived maturity desensitized to the world's harsh realities. In order to grow up he needed to get rid of Kyle. Kyle follows him around, tries to get him to eat childish chicken nuggets, tries to win him back. He's like the part of him that wants to be a kid again. He cuts his hair and becomes someone else. He's grown now. He wants to leave town. His frightened mother is the uncertainty in the back of his mind.

@graysonisgod The change was fast like the way people remember their lives. One minute you're a ten yr old kid riding bikes with your pals and the next minute you're 13 and trying to go out on dates. Growing up is quick like that. It changes everything in a very short period of time.

@graysonisgod Remember Kyle represents Winter's boyhood. Kyle is more like a metaphor more so than his own individual character. Winter was beating him to get rid of him or in other words his own childhood. We all do this to ourselves as we get older. We rid ourselves of things we're embarrassed about from our childhood or ashamed of. We throw our toys away when we're teens for example. We destroy childhood selves in order to become someone new and older.

@blurtopia I think Winter was jealous of his friend (the narrator), because he was having to grow up while his friend was still living young and free. I think Winter was dealing with a lot of family shit, like his brother and the woman (presumably his mom?) becoming manipulated by the war. I don't think that Winters girlfriend and the narrater had anything going on, contrary to what the music video suggest. So basically, his surroundings and teenage angst caused him to do it, not the narrator.

@josecarlosamador I'll give it a shot. It seems to be about a bunch of teens having a good time in the suburbs when the military takes control. It's not meant to be a true story or anything, but Win and Will Butler of the band draw a lot of inspiration from their childhood that was spent in the Woodlands, a suburb outside of Houston, TX, if I'm not mistaken. They're playing a concert there this tour and one of the songs from their EP is entitled "Woodlands National Anthem."

I saw Scenes From the Suburbs at a private screening at SXSW and was completely blown away, as always, by Spike Jonze's directing chops. The themes and concepts presented in The Suburbs were explored in the most satisfying and intriguing way I could have imagined. I doubt anyone will be disappointed when it finally gets released.
