  • i think rebas voice mayched the plot better then vicki. but hey both are great

  • ENOUGH WITH THE VICKI/REBA COMPARSION people!! This is the best version, always has been, still is, and always will be !! Reba is a great singer, we all know that, but GD IT she doesn't own this song, Vicki does! now all y'all SHUT UP about it, PLEASE! b-t-w, I AM a backwoods southern lawyer and we ARE like what Vicki sings about!

  • Im amazed it was the only one too but at least we as the public didn't lose her all together......she continued to split my sides with laughter.....we'd watch The Carol Burnett show at granna and papa's house and there would be about 12 ppl rolling with laughter and holding their sides. Thank you for this awesome song and for many years of healthy laughter. You are loved Vicki. (I agree this version hands down)

  • she,s has a lovely singing voice..

  • "Its the first time I realised that the girl singing the song was the one who shot Andy"

"You didnt realise the singer was the one who shot andy?"

"Yer I know motherfucker I just heard it"

  • don't much care for the picnic table shirt, but what a great song...

  • @MoeDonuts ... LMAO!!! PICNIC TABLE SHIRT!!! you're so right!!!!

  • does eny body know what year ?

  • ...And that's one body that'll never be found...

  • Reba did a respectable version but nothing beats this original cvlassic.

  • This song was written for CHER but at the time CHER was still married to Sonny and pretty much controlled by Sonny. Sonny thought the song was wrong for CHER. Instead Sonny produced an album of old standards which CHER sang the vocals. The album was a crashing dud. She is lucky she had a singing career after that but not enough people bought it to know how bad it was. Six months later CHER recorded Half Breed which went to #1. CHER didn't know Sonny turned down this song until years later.

  • @9USAjock That's pretty sad.

  • the best version not Reba's

  • I remember this song when I was a little kid...I still enjoy it!

  • better version i agree

  • This is the bomb, she should be "proud" it still rocks!!!

  • 1973 Nixon was President.

  • It's amazing that this same woman made thousands of people laugh for decades on the Carol Burnett Show and Mama's Family.

  • Reba and Vicki's versions are so different, Reba is amazing and does this song justice her voice is so powerful and has a wonderful range. Even though Viki Lawrence origanlly sang this, Reba's version is better in my opinion.

  • 25 Dislikes? TURN ON THE FUCKING SOUND!

  • Never knew she sang this song. I like it.

  • I used to have this song with Vickie Lawrence singing it on 8 track!

  • This is the Best version of this song, have always loved it!!

  • Oh the memories, great song.

  • As a 12 yr old kid i loved this song--and Sonny is/was a dork, altho he had a knack for music but like that other insane moronPhil Spector, so what Sonny was a total right-wing shithead

  • @warren3427 hey respect the dead! rip sonny bono

  • Sonny turned the song down, because he thought it would offend people in the South. 'don't trust your soul with no backwoods southern lawyer'.

  • she is the female alfred e newman

  • Thumbnail was misleading, I wanted to watch carrot top do stand up.

  • This song is about what happens when ppl dont pay there light bill..SO TY EDISON

  • @dimpsey3 That's funny.

  • I remember watching her sing this on the Carol Burnett Show, but since most people think I am thirty something I won't say how long ago it was. Reba is a better vocalist, Vicki's version is the classic original, and always will be.

  • @flilguy Reba is by far better vocalist, and probably a person as Viki Lawrence has become a bitter Victoria jackson-type bitch

  • @warren3427 May I ask which Victoria Jackson? Micheal Jackson's sister, or the white comedian from SNL? In the 1960's and 1970's Vicki Lawrence use to sing from time to time when she starred on CBS network's The Carrol Burnett Show, Mama's Family was on NBC in the 1980's. Vicki Lawrence was a household name at least 20 years before Reba McEntire was famous country singer. I don't think Vicki Lawrence is bitter. Ask the people who are close to McEntire who the bitter bitch is.

  • Why can't music be like this anymore?

  • I get her and Helen Reddy slightly mixed up---in looks wise.

  • I had this 45 as a kid. Thanks for bringing back the memories from my childhood. I remember this song from the KFRC 610 in San Francisco , on my small transistor AM radio

  • @UndercoverObserver I still have this 45! I played it all the time along with 'Little Willy', 'The Night Chicago Died', 'Come and Get Your Love', 'Lookin' For A Love'...... 7 years old at the time.

  • @UndercoverObserver Ha, I listened to it on my Transistor in Detroit on KCLW which was a great station from across the river in Windsor Canada. Transistors were the "I-pods" of the day (haa). DId you know they supposedly ran this song past several female singers of the day and they all turned it down, including Cher. Vicki was the one who said YES...Good thing huh!

  • wow it's been year's i heavent heard this in a while i do remeber it being number 1 for a long time.

  • My dad had her hits on a 8 track player...My favorite song from her was Killing me softly with his song

  • Vicki Lawrence is still hot

  • Reba did it very good but Vicki did it better.

  • Reba did it better.

  • OK. Somebody explain to me why the lights would go out if they HUNG an innocent man as opposed to ELECTROCUTING him, which is the intended meaning of the "lights going out".

  • @rakknco187 Light=good, Dark=bad. The lights went out because the good left the town.

  • damn trolls, thats a picture of carrot top

  • "to tell you the truth i been with her myself" awesome line

  • I still have the record I bought in 1973! A monster hit!

  • this is about the leo frank case.

  • what the hell is this song about?! im not even on dope and im just totally in the dark here on this one!! cool hell of a song though, thank u for uploading :)

  • @Adarvuli If you pay attention to the lyrics, you'll understand the story. That's part of what defined the Southern Gothic style ("Ode to Billy Joe," "Down From Dover," & "Angie Baby" being other great examples) of the period; you had to really listen because the song was telling a story.

  • When Vicki had her talk show, I loved the very last show, she had Reba on and wanted her to do this song, Reba said only if she would do it with her..It was fantastic with both of them doing this song...

  • i lov this song

  • i was like a bany back then an it was soooooo scary to me this song was super scary to me back then,,, wow,, the music today is sooooo fit for horror movies an nightmares,, wow music is soooooo bad today, we had real music....

  • Wingman is 100% correct-Cher turned down this song b/c she thought it would offend "Southerns". Instead, Cher opted for songs that would offend "Everyone" instead.

  • originaly it was offered to Cher, she turned it down. its true.

  • I like this version better because it has more mystery to it. I like Reba's version, but Vicky did it better.

  • she kicks reba's ass with this one :)

  • Vicki sung this song Great! , or should i say, Thelma Harper. lol She played that part real good on Mama's Family! I heard that Lee Majors wrote the theme song to The Fall Guy...the unknown stuntman. I thought it was someone else the whole time while watching that show. Talented people back in those days! ...and Waylon Jennings wrote The Dukes of Hazzard theme. Reba's version of this song wasn't bad either, but Vicki's is the best!

  • bucksport special there

  • Before Reba.

  • this version is so much better than Reba's. It is hard to believe this was her only hit. I wonder why since she has a beautiful voice

  • @13zylon reba's is more country, vickie's is more like am gold

still gave thumbs up.cause this takes me back and that's a good feeling!

  • love this song from my childhood, like the reba version to.

  • Was common for people on TV comedy/variety shows (like Vicki was on Carol Burnett's show) to record music.

  • written by vickis husband bobby russell. originally intended for cher, but she turned it down

  • @psychedelicsam1 very interesting! Thanks for the info....love trivia stuff like this :)

  • RESERVOIR DOGS

  • @vestibenepensamale That's great! I forgot... Love Dogs!

  • wow this is the same person who was on momma's family. I did not know that until now. she lives in long beach ca. my cousin said she was nice and shopped out the same store that she did.

  • MAMA'S FAMILY!!! WOW!!!

  • You are with G*D Now Troy Davis...An INNOCENT man who WAS MURDERED by the state. Rest In Peace you dear man. I AM TROY DAVIS

  • Great Song from MAMA lol, does anyone else think that "what it's like" by everlast sounds very similar to this song?

  • She is deceiving; she has huge, firm breast. Who would have thunk?

  • I knew this song well from 1972 and knew Vicki Lawrence well from the Carol Burnett Show, but I never put the two together until just now. Cool. Great voice. And, really, an edgy song for Vicki Lawrence as I imagined her, and as she appears on the album cover.

  • @videoinformer Me too! I saw her on TV for years, but I had no idea she sang this.

  • Vicky Lawrence is a awesome singer had no idea.

  • All I can think of "Resevoir Dogs" and the gang talking about who shot Andy

  • @KabukuHotochi9 i agree

  • SING IT MAMA!!

  • THANKS A LOT MAMA!

  • I thought this song was the "bomb" when I was 13--later had to find out it was voted worst song of all time! You go Viki!!

  • Many many people have no idea Vicki Lawrence sang this song long before Reba. This is much better.

  • @anitabreakone noooooooo!!!!

  • 22 didn't know that Vicki Lawrence was the one who shot Andy.

  • MEOW !!

  • HI KEVIN !

  • ONE OF THE GREATEST, MOST HAUNTING SONGS OF ALL TIME!!!

  • I was about 7 when my mom would play this song (in the 90s). I became obnoxiously obsessed with '"classic" music from the generations when music required talent and soul, unlike the bull that 'popular' mainstream music of today is missing. I personally like the Vicki Lawrence version, rather than Reba McIntyre's rendition,

  • Reservoir Dogs made me listen to this song, it sounded interesting, now I love it!

  • When I heard Vicki tell the story about this song it made me smile. Somebody told her country/western hit songs were hard to write. She bet them she could make her first one a hit. Well, the rest is history. (And even I like it!)

  • The troy davis situation was completely race based a week later they let a white man off that actually killed somebody because he said he was sorry they knew this man did the crime they didnt have proof on troy davis this just proves that racism has not left the legal system in america

  • so there is a dead body, the police are within earshot, and he somehow thinks shooting the gun is a good idea. no one is that stupid.

  • I agree with phucket. What the heck does that have to do with this story of injustice? I live in a crooked country and understand how something like this could happen in real life. When no justice is found then citizens sometimes have to take things into their own hands. Some people are so low that they don't care who they hurt and this song is an example.

  • Oh, man. I was a teen when this song came out and I thought it was the silliest, cheesiest pop song ever. And of course I loved it.. Went right out and bought the record and played it constantly. I even remember watching Vicki sing it on "The Carol Burnett Show." Those were the days.

  • @TheCatgirl6 so how were those days really? i guess i missed out

  • @littlebabygiggles08 I'd tell you if I thought your question was sincere.

  • @TheCatgirl6 you know i really want to know my parents cant really tell me because they were only teenagers and didnt listen to this kind of music

  • I love Reba - she's one of the all time country queens. But I grew up with this version and I still think Vicki does it the best.

  • @metfan4evr Vicki will always be remembered for the "original"...

  • off chasing sparks now! :)

  • one of those 'southern ballads' which we cannot get enough...they tell better stories down there!~~~~

  • This song sounds so spooky and scared the crap out of me as a kid.

  • 70,s classic.

  • Troy Davis is dead, good riddance.

  • Okay, the whole Troy Davis thing, personally I believe he's innocent. Too many people changed their stories over the years to not shake your head. And last time I checked, a death row inmate with no prior credentials hardly has intimidation power! Maybe I'm wrong though, not sure we'll ever know. Will say that this song however is a brilliant piece of gothic southern storytelling!

  • @badboisuga i don't know. i do think there were too many inconsistancies in the stories and too many changes. just for that, he shouldn't have been executed.

  • I Like Rebas Verison :D

  • Ok peeps listen close brother finds out best friend Andy Worlow is doin his wife along with everyone in town Andy leaves and walks home Brother goes home and slut wifey is not home figures she must have skipped town and grabs his old mans gun and goes over to Andys place he sees small footprints and Andy dead and shoots the gun to flag down the patrols. They arrest him and a crooked judge sentences him to die. We then find out lil sis killed Andy and slut wife only they will never find her body.

  • Why are you morons talking about Troy David who has nothing to do with this song?

  • @phucket1000 Cause that's what these clowns do on YouTube.

  • @phucket1000 C'mon, you know this is the ADD generation.

  • Who cares about that crap? I spent 20 years as a sf soldier, and after seeing the worst war torn areas on earth, I KNOW the US is a Garden of Eden. I can't believe this good old song precipitated such ignorant nonsense.

  • It is an odd thing .... the bullets at the scene of the officers death matched the ones troy davis was shooting up a party with earlier ... HMMM ... yep guilty .... glad he is dead WOO HOO!

  • With the exception that Troy Davis is guilty!

  • I meant Andy was having affair w/ singer's brother's WIFE, (not ANDY!)

  • Andy was having an affair with the singer's brother and so the singer (she) ambushed Andy , but the sheriff and judge arrested the singer's brother. No Cop was killed. That's why I think Eric Clapton's songs are digusting- he encourages violence agains law and order folks.

  • Good singer, better comedian.

  • I can see why this bozo never had another hit song. People watch too much Hollywood bullshit.

  • thank you for acknowledging the injustice of our so-caled justice system againt Troy Davis May his Pain

Been spared and May He Enter the Kingdom of the RIGHTEOUS

  • It's got an Awesome Beat that you can dance to!

  • its not just crooked southern cops, cause we got crooked northern cops here in minnesota as well

  • @leegeddyfan Hey don't say that! We're planning to move out there!!

  • this is a true story of how the old south used to be run.I can assure that being a georgia man myself.

  • this is another one of those gritty southern mystery songs (ala Bobby Gentry). And who ever would have guessed that Carol B.'s second banana had such a great voice. A deserved hit.

  • I had such a crush on Vickie Lawrence when this came out. When I saw this album cover she became my girl. LOL That is till the famous Fara Fawcette poster came out.

  • From someone who had a family killed violently, I agree about the injustice of the death penalty. It is a hard thing, but it is all about revenge, no matter one says. It is hard to look at someone who killed your loved one, but capital punishment is not the answer, and not Christian. It is not what Jesus would have done...

  • @chicagorunner13 i agree. When the man was executed in Ga few weeks back and there were people demonstrating about his pending execution I heard a man speak on tv that use to run the prison were the executions took place in that state. He was the one that would give the order to do the injection when the time come. He was very interesting. He is now against the death penality and he said doing what he did takes a toll on your soul (something like that) and DP is about revenge not justice.

  • Vicky had a great voice! I remember my shock back in the '70s when I found out it was her that sang this! Great song, tragic story.

  • i remember hearing this song on the way back from my favorite uncle's wake. I was sitting in the back seat of my brothers car. This song was about a mile or two from my house. I miss my uncle. He was such a nice man.

  • The is amazing as a singer and actress. I would not worry about the cops in Georgia. Back in the old days (maybe today....IDK) they locked up my Daddy, took his money and for nothing...said speeding. Ha! Place was Jessup, GA.

  • ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.

  • sooo good

  • Your comments about Troy Davis are stupid, ignorant, criminals like to use the system, and he did. He killed a police officer working a 2nd job trying to support a new baby because you fine citizens dont want to pay LEOs a decent wage. I guarantee Davis is laughing his A.. off in Hell where he belongs....he will never shoot someone again......in other words, he is a good criminal

  • @MrJuliebugs you tell him like it is

  • @MrJuliebugs I hit the wrong button.

Davis should never been found guilty, the evidence has shown that.

  • Is this based on a true story or something?

  • Vicki Lawrence was born March 26, 1949 and is now 62 years of age.

  • Whether he was innocent or not, don't forget that that is was us, the people, who sentenced him to death. The death penalty can only be sentenced by a jury, not a judge. So we only have ourselves to blame for his death. I aslo believe you will find that he was convicted of a previous murder that he committed the same day with plenty of evidence.....

  • It was done by Taunia Tucker also in 1973

  • Another Star that Daniel J. Selby( See his Website on her.) claimed to have been good friends with. She told someone who asked her about him and said that she didn't know the guy and didn't remember meeting him (This usually means that he was a Stalker and she choose not to remember him for fear that he would take it that she and he were friends, which Stalkers always do.) Pretty scary guy.

  • Grew up loving this song, Thank goodness when it got re-made it was done by Reba. She's probably the only one that could have nailed it.

  • how do you know he was innocent, did he tell you so. think about the cop that died and his family< how did troy get caught up in this mess. why does everyone have to be innocent just because they say so,

  • @thatchevy101 I am one who truly believes in capital punishment, but like someone else stated mistakes can be made, for example if you look up unsloved mysteries final appeal Cedric Young,it's about a man who is in prison since 1993 for a voilent armed robbery,But the problem is he is an IDENTICAL twin, and swears it was not him but his twin that did the crime, his own mother thinks so to.he got 68 years for the crime, what if he really is innocent?

  • remember he stated not personally responsible for the cops death, think did he know who was.if he did why didnt he come clean to save his life own not our responsiblilty to save his life if he was protecting someonelse, also what does this song have to do with this song,

  • vicki lawrence version is 'the' version

    peace )

  • God dam this country can be so barberic.... then we criticize other nations that they are in violation of human rights!!!!! What a crock of sh#*!!!!!

  • @MrTAFSIYNOT thats why capital punishment is such a bad idea, mistakes can be made, and you can't bring someone back

  • @vcat10 I agree with you 100%...... I wish I could shake your hand.

  • This Song is a perfect fit for the state of Georgia.

  • It would be very sad if he is not guilty.

    In that case RIP David.

  • I did a wiki search on David. Imo, I think he is guilty(please note that I said "think"). However, I agree that you can't kill someone if there are so much doubt surrounding his guilt. If the legal system has found him guilty and reject the petition from thousands of people, it should make a public annoucement about the case regading the evidents, witnesses and how they justified that the death sentence is the right decision. Just my thought.

  • Troy Davis... Vicki can see the future.

  • Good job america, for killing an innocent man, Requiescat in Pace Troy Davis

  • @VivaLaVieBoheme49 how do you "know" that he was innocent? It's not wise to make statements of "fact" without having all of the facts.

  • @gwatson678 I believe peoples dying words

  • @gwatson678 its also not wise to put someone to death without having all the facts

  • RIP TROY DAVIS

  • RIP Troy Davis

  • They killed an innocent man tonight...and the ussc has blood on their hands.

  • AMEN RIP TROY DAVIS..This night the state of Georgia legally lynched a brave, a good and indeed an innocent man," Ruffin told a news conference, in a reference to the lynchings of blacks in Georgia and other southern states from after the Civil War through the 1960s.
