One of my professors met Meredith Monk, and he said she is very adamant about not telling why she makes her art. Why? Because she wants everyone else to interpret it for themselves. This is post-modern art--the artists wanted the AUDIENCE to find meaning in their work instead of spelling it out for them; World War II changed art, and people need to see that the change made it more real and beautiful.
