I think the position taken by many intelligence experts and Iranian writers is that the regime is seeking to become self sufficient and have the infrastructure ready to have the option of manufacturing several bombs a year. Dont forget that Iran is very much worried not only about deterrents from U.S and Israel but now also Pakistan (nuclear) and the U.S allies in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is effectively surrounded by all sides and seeks a deterent.

Well, you can add to that seperatist Kurds, Baluchs, Khusestan Arabs and Turkmen. However I dont believe Iran has the fragility of Iraq, its nation boundaries are a lot older and werent drawn up by colonial powers. Back to the story though, its not really secret that Washington is backing Iranian terrorist groups like the MEK in an attempt to destabilise.
There is now way around the fact that Great Persia will be a nuclear might. Lets look at this from a chess players perspective, what are the options to this position at hand? allowing Iran to be with nuclear weapons in the future, or not. What are the consicenses to either? Attacking has a domino effect that we can't afford. Study the past world wars, ww1 treaties and alliance, ww2 the same. We know the cause of this war, but what will the effects be? Not hard to figure out. war unevoidabe.
Though male doctors in Iran are not allowed to carry out vaginal exams, Dr. Azam's emergency-room nurse thoroughly examined Ms. Kazemi and found the bruising to be the result of "a very brutal rape.
Her entire body carried strange marks of violence," Dr. Azam said. "She had a big bruise on the right side of her forehead stretching down to the ear. The ear drum was intact, but the membrane in one of her ears had recently burst, and a loose blood vessel could be seen.
Female Journalist in Iran Gang-raped, tortured, skull fractured, and killed
Iran Press News:
A doctor employed at Bagheeyehollah Hospital in Tehran (connected with the revolutionary guards) where Zahra Kazemi, deceased Iranian/Canadian photojournalist was transfered before dying, left Iran and for the first time, in an interview with a German publication divulged that the regime's interogators and goons had brutally gang-raped the photojournalist while she was under qustioning and torture.
Behind the head, on the left-hand side, was a big, loose swelling. Three deep scratches behind her neck looked like the result of nails digging into the flesh. The right shoulder was bruised, and on the left hand two fingers were broken. Three fingers had broken nails or no nails."
Jay asks a good question when he puts it to Hersh, "Is it really the case that they don't believe the NIE report...?" In other words, could there be other reasons for putting the heat on Iran...? Hersh's whole approach seems naive and blinkered. There are larger geopolitical reasons (energy, the petrodollar) why the U.S. is threatening Iran...

Who realizes that Iran has more energy reserves than Iraq? Do we ever hear that? No! Iran has super fields right across the border from Iraq. Plus they have huge oil and gas reserve that are perfect for the stealing, and far better supertanker access. Plus they are being inhibited from using their own reserves by "sanction". It is obvious they are being set up by the lying Republicans in office.

Although something else could happen the leaders alway go for the high profit scenario, death and suffering be damned.
