That's also Peter Lloyd on bass. What a great show! I can't remember if they did this on Sunday and Monday, but I went to one of the performances.... wish I was still in Chicago:(
That the basset horn even survives today is somewhat of a musical miracle... It underscores the permanence of even the lesser known of Mozart's musical output...could this treasure be performed today on anything else? an alto sax perhaps...
@Lutherman57 This is a wonderful work and to be honest Mozart knew what was doing . The alto sax is not in itself a poor instrument , but substituting it for one of the instruments being used would disturb the balance .
@jimbo5009 Not if the instrument is well-played. This is a great hall for chamber music as well... Turkovic is a god among men! An all-star cast all around...
I disagree... where else but 4 french horns could support a lead oboe and clarinet with such sublime beauty? a whole orchestra could do with two ...but four? and in such a small group? I think this is a total ensemble piece... Bravo to Mozart!
Do you have the rest of this? The best concerts I ever heard were presented by the CCM when I was a student at DePaul. Larry Combs was my teacher. I would love to hear the rest of this!
I would prefer a more stately tempo. Zu schnell.

ONe other comment...why does a french horn fit so sublimely with a "wood" wind ensemble when it so often sticks out in a symphony orchestra?
