  • We (US) been doing the same thing for decades w/minority groups.

The Democratic party w/their Great Society Social Programs to wipe-out poverty has failed miserably.

They have made minorities wards of the state and hooked on those programs to the point they can't live w/out.

This was social engineering at it's worst!

  • Dambisa Moyo is awesome

  • Yes Dambisa Moyo's argument is not new BUT she is an African woman someone with the life experience to understand African economics. Dambisa Moyo has a doctorate in economics she knows what she is talking about. I am tired of these white pop stars such as Bono, Madonna, Bob Geldolf talking about the African continent. The African dictators need to be held accountable and the foreign aid needs to be cut off!

  • @JordanjamesX well not all people with phds in economics know about proper theories of economics but yes, she know what she is talking about

  • Why do you think she's echoing someone else's words? Quite honestly, I think what she's saying is rather obvious. I've never liked the idea of african governments relying on aid from foreign countries to keep their own countries running. I'm happy that there's finally someone who can voice the truth to the international community who are so intent on pumping millions into these never-changing african countries.

  • Is she Isaias Afewerki s' (of Eritrea) daughter ? I think this lady went to Asmara University rather then Harvard. She seems to echo Wedi Afom's (i.e. Isaias Afewerki ) words.

  • What ever happened to help out our fellow man. Clarifyting what she means by aid. She hates Bono and these celebrities trying to help. God this lady gets on my nerves.

  • Why does the interviewer seem so unfairly obsessed with Zimbabwe. As a Zimbabwean who has traveled extensively across Africa and the rest of the world, I hardly think its the worst of them. Yes, the economy shrunk tremendously over the last decade and the reasons for this are many, some obvious, others not so but I would hardly say it is linked to aid - infact quite the opposite as up till a few months ago, Zimbabwe had not had access to aid except for humanitarian reasons since 2000.

  • @zimbomatty I think the interviewer had something about Zimbabwe or he is trying generate a story about Zimbabwe. I personal dont like this guy because he is trying to put Zimbabwe where it does not fit. How does he know that Zimbabwe is not a good model we have to wait and see. Zimbabweans survived without aid from north america for years, under high inflationary rate. I was there we survived now I believe we can do it with out aid.

  • I think Dambisa is being mis read & attacked she is not talking about a shock end to aid she discusses quiet clearly open ended aid agreement is not an answer to Africa's growth problems. The African mind set should be it will not last forever & we need a plan, one that we will follow through. The economic crisis serves to neccessitate the change of mind set as aid will be cut by almost half due to this crsis. Donor countries having to look after thier own-Zambian female NGO working

  • Precisely. I don't know how many times Dambisa has to clarify the three types of aid, and pointedly specify the one particular iteration of aid that her book critiques, before these idiots get it.

I don't know why people (liberals) enjoy attacking something they haven't read. Dambisa's points are excellent and her analyses are fantastic. Her critics can't refute her arguments so they intentionally misinterpret her fundamental points to write her off as a genocidal maniac.

  • pity = racism/paternalism

  • I agree with Dambisa. Africa cannot continue to rely indefinitely on Aid. What Africa needs is not a handout but helping hand. In 60 years of getting aids, Africa is even worse. Africans have to learn to stand up and help themselves- instead of Aid,govts should be trying to develop and create jobs, business for its people. Why should african countries cannot provide for its people. Are africans that helpless- I do not think so- I think African govt need to wake up and start performing

  • As an african gal i kinda disgree with dambisa cos i think that western contribution has played a major role in our continents development and this is just not through donations but also education, technology. etc and so i cant imagine how africa would be like without western intervention .

  • With western intervention, all we are doing is being prepared to function and work in their system. Without western intervention, we would create our own system i.e. we would develope our own education, our own technology and so on. This is what Africa was in the past. Please start to believe in your own ability

  • WELL, THE PITY COMES FROM THE FACT THAT EUROPE AND AMERICANS HAVE RAPED THE CONTINENT AND TAKEN 80PERCENT OF WHAT NATURAL RESOURCES THE COUNTRIES HAD. I THINK that she is right but i still hate fox. still hate them.

  • This is soo true, in many African countries the Governments get funding for so called 'Development' but they dont spend it on that. Even clothes that are given to charities like oxfam dont go to the people, they get sold in the local market.
