Poncey middle class idiots! I'm sure they'd loved to have been working class and spent their lives working 12 hour shifts in the local coal mine! Rubbish song too, reminds me of the other vile crap that existed at the time like Nik Kershaw and Howard Jones! Horrible!
@3DPeter I just had a look at it in google maps. It looks much the same.
If you are not familiar with google maps, you can click and drag the human figure onto the map; little blue dots will appear. drop the human on the dot, and it will show you a photo from that view point.
Alternately, you can right click places along roads, and select "street view". You can probably find the hill where they filmed the video from there.
i'm from holland so i'm not so into lyrics, but i like the song, and know it the day it came out somewhere in the 80's. I always was amazed about that town that looked like it stoot still sins the early 50's, and how horrible sad it looks.
it looks like the end of the world, and i can imagine that the rates of people how commit suicide, are very hight in that kind of places, because the whole picture looks like an abandonned grave yard, so not a happy place to grow up an live in, imo.
@3DPeter Wow when I look at this video I thoght it had something to do with the war in Northern Ireland and the IRA when this song came out. but I know now it was about Nick Drake.
like i already siad, i'm not good in lyrics, so i don't have a clue what the song is about, but what i see is a town that looks like it came out of the twillightzone, because it looks like if time stood still for a few decades, while the rest of modern europe was
booming. There are millions of songs and millions of people who don't have a clue what the song is about, The same as morrisey's "Hang the dj". People loved it and dance to it at the disco, while it's a protest against disco
Jllucky8 , JUST DISCOVERED THIS VERSION, HOWEVER, SO VERY CONFUSED OF YOUR COMMENT, WISH ENLIGHTENMENT. MIGHT YOU BE A NATIVE OF THIS LAND? THANKS, A.S.A
take it easy on yerself..............i love this gentle, happy song just as much as the 1st time i heard it twenty-mumble-mumble years ago. it should get an ivor novello award for longevity of sweetness.......or summat like that.
@TheSeanm102 No, it's about Nick Drake. The figure who leaves town without saying goodbye is Nick, who took his own life. The comparable song about John Lennon is Harrison's 'All Those Years Ago.'
Was that because the 80s were bleak (Thatch, etc & etc.)? I miss that bleakness - I'll tell you, it seems a soft-focus, comforting dream as compared with the bleakness of nowadays. There was a social culture still based on a presumption of *shared values*, not on the dystopia of a morally-relativistic multiculture. Anyone and everyone's values being considered equally valid sounds like an idyllic and equitable society. Of course it isn't and could never be.
@pierstheoneandonly Very well written, this is a major problem in many U.S. cities. The dilution of the American way of life in the name of ethnic diversity where U.S. born citizens refuse to accept the fcat that the U.S. does have its own culture aside from it's multinational citizens. If we try to be everything we will be nothing at all.
@mrhoffame Because to be be a teen is to be a seething cauldron of emotions, and when you loved something, you loved it so deeply.
That love has sustained itself and it is evoked by the music of our youth. New music cannot reach you like that because you have gained perspective and rationality. You have tempered your feelings. This is both a blessing and a curse of course.
@OgreProgrammer I understand your theory, but I don't think it really like that for me lol. I mean I don't know if you have seen any of my vieos but there is plenty of music that comes out today that moves me the same way. I guess I was just trying to point out more of the "sense of goals" that music had back then. People can try to destroy the message, but can never destroy the vibration. If that makes any sense to you lol. Thanks for the comment my friend.
I dunno, it's as if the soul of music retreated with the advent of rap. The soul of music is out there, hiding in creases and crevasses for those who appreciate her.
@Monalisacat37 I wouldn't say it was Rap music that did it. IMO a lot of the early hip/hop was very much in tune with the "soul" of soul music. Stuff like African Bam..and so forth were as moving as most soud music. Around 85 it became just "fun". in 91' Rap took a turn for the worst.
I think the real problem is that with all the multimedial stuff the idea of what could sell became more important in music than was was "incredible". Looks and flare replaced the soul of music.
@Monalisacat37 LOL no problem. After all there really is no right or wrong with music right? It's all opinion. ...except for the fact that Kiss and Rush should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That is Fact! lol
@Seej500 it was that bleak, I visited around that time (a Mensa conference my mother was going to no less) - it was around spring or summer and it rained ALL THE TIME. So yeah. bleak. But beautiful too.
I am watching the video of this great super song. It was without a doubt, one of the best songs of the 1980's. Definetly in the top ten of rock songs ! This song has haunted me over the years in a very good way. I often think of it when I am driving or going grocery shopping or just sitting down relaxing. For a moment it makes me wish that I lived in Dream Academy's northern town. It sounds very peaceful and fun. A great song !
Happens to me all the time. People send me music via youtube, and I refuse to watch the video because I know what will happen. When the ears don't get the full attention, the music is pretty much ruined.
Ok at 3:25 he sings "Make it easy on your self" RIGHT after that, what does he sing??? this has been bothering me for ages, I can't make it out. Anyone know?
What a great song, love the lyrics! After I 1st heard it, I went around asking older folks to tell me about life in the winter of 1963 here in our northern town, and their thoughts of J.F.K and his Beatles?
Love the northern, 'Heartbeat- feel' of this video and the great tune and chorus... almost makes ya wanna head off to Hebden Bridge to have a look... (also love how the two little walking girls at 0:32-0:33 swap positions as the singer rounds the corner...) :-)
I remember that when this song and video came out in 1985, I was very happy. For me a big relief in that horrible synth-pop era, where really good songs were scarse.
