The tables are numbered so the right people get killed. The cigarettes are laced with nitroglycerin (an explosive) so when they light them they'll be killed. Brenden is 'the new cancer' because instead of smoking the cigarettes and dying from lung cancer he's the one who laced the cigarettes with explosives and is the new cause of death.
