  • Probably the best sit-com (Porridge and Going Straight) ever made! Both David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst cut their teeth with Ronnie Barker. David worked with Barker on a number of projects including of course Open All Hours. Nicholas plays Fletch's son Raymond in the second episode of Going Straight. Ironically Fletcher went BACK to prison after this series when Barker and the rest of the gang made the movie Porridge. 3 series, 2 Xmas specials, one spin-off series and one movie. MARVELOUS!!!

  • 26p?? For a BEER??

  • @bobb4you times that by 10 and you have today's prices.

  • 02.15 "No entry after September 11th that fateful day".. Did the writers have a premonition???

  • @meltonmowbray2003 Well spotted. I thought the same when I viewed this wonderful series again about 8 years ago. I can still remember the excitement of finally seeing Fletch and Godber on the 'outside' 30 odd years ago. Ironically, my father's birthday also falls on the 11th September - giving me no excuse to forget! Be seeing you.

  • pity he had to leave mclaren behind, hes an awesome character not celebrated enough, mixed raced scott, thanks porriage for bringing this to my attention, hes very handsome and should have had his own show. just love his accent and his character. and love fletch too.

  • @texplastics Agreed! McClaren is a fabulous character... as is 'Fletch', of course!

    :)

  • it was great to see him go free you don't often see that with prison series

  • stop wieing and enjoy its free

  • Interesting to hear them speak as equals. And Fletcher is right. They are both having to look for work. While watching this after having a marathon of watching this program for the first time, when I came to this one I thought (this is how involved I got with his character) "please make him go straight." :) For his family's sake if nothing else. Time to grow up and be respondsible. And if he knew how many people had to work hard to keep him feed in prison he might take life seriously.

  • @Songsmirth I envy you watching this for the first time... for me it's more of a rediscovery, but the upside of that is that it also comes with a free time-travel trip: it really takes me back a looooooooong time! Ronnie Barker was the funniest man in the UK IMHO...''

    :)

  • @theseustoo Yes, it's fun but the down side is that I've just gotten to know these characters and in the posts people say, this one's dead and that one. Fletcher, McKay, etc. I never knew them yet it saddens me for some reason. Silly huh? And Baker was a natural comic. He was so comfortable with the part the others fell into it with him. I can't help but think since he was so excellent it effected the excellence in others who might not be that good. :) What are, "tin corned plasters?" :)

  • @Songsmirth Yes, it is sad. When Godber died, most of the UK felt like they'd lost a family member. Life's like that; one must learn to take the bitter with the sweet; "Into every life a little rain must fall... just a little rain..." (Led Zep)

It's actually 'a tin of corn-plasters': ie. medicinal plasters for corns which develop on feet.

BTW, as an ex-London busker I love your nickname. Do you play an instrument? Or is your instrument your voice?

    :)

  • @theseustoo Yes I know. My elder brother died last week. Heart attack. Still trying to take it in. Anyway, what is a, 'busker?" As it happens, I took opera singing lessons in college. Played the caralon but not for long. Hard to put one in your pocket to practice on. Makes it difficult when the whole college can hear your mistakes. lol Organ, piano and guitar. Just love music. :) Songs

  • @Songsmirth I'm so sorry to hear about your brother. I know how that feels as I lost two of my brothers within three months, the same year that John Lennon died (and that felt like losing another brother too!) That was about thirty years ago... it still doesn't seem right, or fair... What is a 'caralon'? A busker is someone who plays music in the streets (or the London Underground) for a living; I play guitar and sing a bit. I've always loved music!

  • @theseustoo Interesting. Carillon. I spelled it wrong. :( It's bells in a tower. There's several vids on here so you can see. You play curling up your fist and hitting wooden pegs like the feet pedals of an organ. In the winter up here you have to go to each bell and loosen them as they can freeze in place. In the open air too so we should get a medal! lol Nothing like it though. I wasn't very good and wish I could further my lessons./ So sorry about your bro's. Can't imagine. Songs

  • @Songsmirth Ahh... now I know what a 'Carillon' is... Sounds like fun; that's the kind of instrument one could REALLY annoy the neighbours with! (Just kidding!) Hey, if you'd like to continue this conversation somewhere more appropriate, you could email my nickname AT a flightless bird that's as dead as a.... with the usual dot com and a 'dot au' too... Get it? or you could visit my blog and leave a comment at Astyagesdotwordpressdotcom. I'll get back to you, I promise...

    :)

  • As of yesterday they've removed most of the episodes. I think it's silly because I would have never known about them other than for You Tube. I see their point in a way though. They do own them. Still sad. I'm not going to go out and buy them.

  • @Songsmirth The ironic thing is, I WOULD actually buy a DVD of this if I enjoy it on Youtube.

I like owning things that I really like, be it DVDs or CDs. It's great to have the accessibility of these things online, but to me nothing beats holding the item in your hands!

  • @Jarren202 Yes, yes you're right. After thinking about it I'm with you. It was an irony to read what you said because at first I thought for a second I wrote it. I like owning things that I like. Just having it. If I got a good buy on these I'd buy them. They ARE that good. What characters. . It's very kind of people to have put them up so I didn't miss out. My life is a little more richer for being able to watch them. :) Songs

  • @Songsmirth Quite so! I agree.

  • So awesome!

I've never really watched Going Straight, but I am a big fan of Porridge.

I'm watching Going Straight from the beginning, and I love what I see so far!

  • Get in! I have been looking for this for ages!!!! Thanks for the upload!!! :)

  • McKay's birthday is April 25th not 23rd - I remember him saying so in an earlier episode, because it's the same as mine.

  • Good for you lol.

  • 8:00 Did trains really used to have buffet cars like that?!

  • @thebeeskl Oh yes! They certainly did! Crikey! You know you're getting old when you find yourself remembering 'the good old days' more often than you're enjoying the present ones!

    ;)

  • 13:20 - an example of the good old days. When you could make it to the platform a second or two late and use your initiative to still board. Nowadays of course if you arrive late by the same margin you can only watch in agony like a spare part at a wedding, as they ever-so-slowly depart without you.

  • why do they give him his penknife and then let hime go back to his cell

  • when the uk was still the uk bloody thatcher blair brown and now clegg

  • september 11th, that tragic day.

  • @MonaLisaNaked Thats really weird lol
