  • lolz i love comment debates

  • holy shit that ending was way too killer

  • @MetalBassist73 2:48-2:50 is chromatic fantasies

  • Wow! You guys just continually prove my point. Time to look inwards for a while. What I find most amusing about your narrow-minded idiocy is your assumptions both about my age, my musical tastes, my gender, and my sexual orientation! I am finding it quite fascinating and it speaks volumes to me about the kind of people who are truly enthusiastic about this lifeless "Jam in C". A veritable 'pandoras box' of social commentary. I love it! Keep it up guys! You are as special as your mom said!

  • Jaco on a fretted bass is a dangerous thing.

  • It's always funny to me to see someone say a song lacks feeling simply bc the individual in question fails to connect with that particular piece of music. By that same logic I can say any number of pop songs have no feeling whatsoever despite their overly touchy feely lyrics. Who's right? If you don't like it that's fine. Saying that any piece of music has no feeling seems silly to me as something had to go into making it whether you can feel it or not.

  • Hi. Im playing bass for 5 years, my dad did it too for whole life, but what i want to say is that i don't like Jaco's style. there's no emotions, no feelings, which are most importat to me in whole music and every kind of instruments. Check out guys like Krzysztof Ścierański

  • @TheAlexakar

You've got to be kidding me. If there's any bass player who plays with feeling and emotion it's Jaco! Have you heard Continuum, Portrait of Tracy, Bright Size Life, A Remark You Made, Sirabhorn, Hejira, Refuge of The Roads etc.? I very much doubt that you have, because those songs are textbook examples of how to play a bass with feeling and emotion.

  • @TheAlexakar

Couldn't agree more. I have never connected with Jaco. Seems more like an exercise in dexterity than anything musically meanifull. The guy was obviously a huge talent, but not sure how inspired he was even by his own stuff

  • @theekrusher I hope you don't play the bass, because it's a waste of time for someone as shallow as yourself.

  • @trapfman The truth of the situation always breeds strong reactions. Some of the greatest bass players of all time actually have songs that connect with people and live on in the collective imagination of the population. Jaco serves a niche market of people who like noodly bass playing, but the masses have never given a hoot, becuase it's not all that inspired or memorable, it just accomplised that all. It's good in the same way you can be good at ping pong.

  • @theekrusher In other words; you're too stupid for his music. I'm glad the mass does not know about Jaco, because the mass is retarded (probably why you feel so comfortable around it, but also the reason why shit like democracy doesn't work). Go masturbate to some more Paul McCartney you gay dweep.

  • @theekrusher - You and Alexakar should appear on 'world's biggest losers.' That's the only thing you girls could win at...

  • @MarcusWellf I guess you identify yourself as a total idiot by your sexist comment. Maybe if you had ever been loved by a "girl" you wouldn't be stuck in your bedroom jerking off and listening to Jaco. You don't know my gender, but I know your stupid, so that makes it even. Get a life geek!

  • @theekrusher - The fact is I didn't know your gender - just your ignorance. What are you doing here anyway? You clearly do not know great musicianship, so go back to your 'green day' and 'beyonce' kid. Besides, you sound like a delusional fatty who's mom is a real cunt...

  • @theekrusher

From your comments I'm assuming that you're basing your opinion on the first couple of youtube clips you happened to run into. Just the fact that you wrote him off as "noodly" is very telling. You see, Jaco's musicianship was so deep that "judging" his playing on such modest amounts of material is not possible. It would be like writing a book review after only having read the first paragraph. I'll be happy to direct you to clips that showcase the full spectrum of his abilities.

  • @Musicenthusiasm

I would happily be converted to Jaco worship. I gotta say that so far I don't see the passion in him, just the technique, but I totally open to be proven wrong, so please direct me to better stuff. I am not a complete neophyte with a knee-jerk opinion, but when I think about some music I like, there are some people who are "hit and miss" as well. I am starting to think I just don't like tinny Fender Jazz basses, but that's a whole other heated debate!

  • @theekrusher I guess passion is something difficult to convey though, as what is one man painting his soul on a musical canvas may to you sound like 5 crochets and it may very well be just that! However if he or she is expressing themselves by that then who are we to be critical? Its music and it's subjective so celebrate that we all have different tastes or it would all be boring! So you may think x about Y and I may think Z about A but why bicker about things that are personal? :)

  • @TheAlexakar

Do you know the meaning of the word groove? He was able to incorporate this into all that dexterity. It it wasn't for him, you probably would be playing about 50% of what you play now.

  • @TheAlexakar There is a reason why Jaco Pastorius is considered to be the greatest and most influential bass player of all time. Even though his playing is complex, fast and with a distinctive sound, there are so many other players who can play complex and fast, but Jaco did it with such feel and he still understood the fact that the bass guitar was a rhythm instrument and not a lead instrument, yet he was still able to play all the dynamics of a lead instrument. That's what made him Jaco.

  • @TheAlexakar - Don't say that around musicians, kid. Otherwise, you'll never get a gig in your life...

  • @MarcusWellf First: I'm not a kid. Second: I've already did about 50 gigs in my life.

  • @TheAlexakar - Oh, you most certainly still are a child - musically, at least. Rest assured, 10 years from now you'll either feel like a complete idiot for making that statement about Jaco or you'll be doing something else altogether...

  • someday an old jazz man told me 'jazz is everything as it is nothing, you can do whatever you feel like, as long as you understand harmonical structure' so be in D or be in F, every scale of your neck is playable.

  • @WingChunHard

Thelonius Monk said, there is no wrong note played with the bass. What is important, is to play the correct next note.

  • I love everyone debating on what key it's in.... is that why you people came... to argue that lol.... Just listen to jam and go pick up your fucking bass and get inspired! :)

  • lol this be in D nigga.

  • EL MEJOR DE TODOS!!!!!!!! EN ESPAÑOL!

  • @TengeraMusic

This solo is improvised. It's absolutely not "prepared". Jaco was a master improviser.

  • Absolutely refuse to believe this is a jam. Soo gooood

  • @TheSicDominator

Jaco was indeed a great improviser.

  • i been playin six years and i aint got shit on him :/

  • I would like to say that it's in D minor. I don't care if it's dorian or not. The bass line does not establish any sort of major tonality, so to say that it's in C (C implying major) is completely absurd.

  • he fumbles a fair bit trying to find something impressive. I was bored

  • @rulerwithcounsel go back to your cave troll

  • Can somebody please tell me the tab of Marcus Miller that is playing? thank you

  • @cuccumellaro that is not marcus miller

  • @cuccumellaro

is this some kind of humour?

  • This is filthy. Love to see Jaco rocking the fretted bass for once. I had this instructional video when I was a kid and I swear it changed my life...

  • Jaco was the tip of the spear.

  • Jaco.......bass!!!! I love!

  • Maybe it is in D dorian. and that's basically C major.

  • @1994Jordynn it IS in D dorian, which is a mode of C maj.

  • @fryBASS Glad someone understands. Haha. C major just built of the 2

  • my emotions feel better listening to these guys

  • "...left hand"

  • Comment removed

  • hey, everyone, no ones impressed that you can tell its in d or whatever fuckin scale(s) you wanna call it, no one at all

  • @Bassification222

He's not just using the Dorian mode. there's a lot of chromaticism all the way through. that being said, the tonal centre is D, so you'd have to say that it's in D. Otherwise what's to say that it's not in Aeolian mode on A or Phrygian mode on F?!

  • @AngusGardiner thats exactly what i hate about music students, they talk like that, just shut up and jam no one cares, if you need to know that type of shit to jam theres something missing on the inside

  • @CantDenyDime Sorry bro! didnt mean to rile anyone up. Just thought it was an interesting point to make. You dont 'need' to know it, but it's just an interesting thing to look at sometimes. And by the way, i meant to say "Lydian mode on F" before... haha

  • @CantDenyDime Dude, he wasn't going youtubeish telling you something like "fuck you you fucking fuck fuckhole buttfucked whoreson, the tonal centre is D", he was, quite contrary, being polite about it, so I think you are being a little touchy here. And to know musical theory as well as this AngusGardiner obviously does is never bad - it actually improoves your playing a lot. But I agree that people who are being snobbish about it are retards.

  • @CantDenyDime

you don't have to be a music student to know that. it's common knowledge every musician wants to/should know in order to know what they're doing (blues players at least know pentatonic and blues scale)- then they can jam their hearts out. i mean... why would you get so offended at that??? just admit you dont know what he's talking about and you never bothered to learn it.. he should respect that choice, and if he doesn't then you can call him snobby and flame or whatever

  • @AngusGardiner Modes for the win mate!

  • Chromatic Fantasy at 2:50 :p

  • Jaco is so warm person... Great fingerpickin.. cool mood, funny in replying

  • its definitely in C. just 2nd/dorian. the lick at about 0:54 shows this pretty well.

  • @Bassification222

haha. you mean that because he's playing a c arpeggio over d, it's in c?

    it's definitely in D!

  • Thats an awesome color on Jerry's bass. It's like a dark Cyan. I want that bass

  • does jaco's bass have frets in this video?

  • Jaco's not white. He's (~~~~)

  • I guess we'll call this "Concert C," being that it's in D.

  • left hand

  • Realmente era um gênio mas... Deu muito mole!!!!

  • You guys are idiots "that black guy" is Jerry Jemmott, a legendary bass player in his own right. He was like one of the top session bassists of Motown and beyond. He also was like jacos idol

  • His secret is......Hitchhiker's Thumb.

  • wow...... 1:21

  • @herpaderpatar uh, D minor can also be phrygian, aeolian, or, in this case, dorian so I would say sbyrd1978's explanation is more precise, but we see your point...

  • Jaco is the beast .....

  • this is so awesomee!!! haha yes!!

  • there is no white guy in this video!!!!!!!! Jaco is clearly of latin descent

  • @philmobass

Jaco is of Swedish, Finnish, German and Irish descent. So no, Jaco is not of Latin descent.

  • at 2:39 the black guy reaches for his bass to play something then stops cause he knew he couldn't touch jaco and would just embarrass himself.

  • D dorian would be the same as C Major, not D minor. D minor has Bflat.

  • @sbyrd1978 yup. Except you're talking about natural minor. When I said D minor I meant the standard minor scale 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7. And if you throw in a Bb you are now talking about Aeolian/natural minor.

  • you guys are silly. If it's D minor, then it is ALSO C Major.

    Purt.

  • Jaco rulesss...

  • Jaco's bass sounded so much better once he took the frets out.

  • The Black guy looks like Bushido Brown from the Boondocks!

  • What about Billy Sheehan? In my opinion he's a better bass player compared to Pastorius .-.

  • @Lieturon92 Sheehan is great, but I don't think he has as much soul as Jaco does. They're both great, don't get me wrong, just bringing another perspective to the conversation.

  • "yeah... left hand...."

  • I just came....

  • Isn't it ironic? The best bass player in the world(Jaco) is white, and possibly the best guitarist (Hendrix) is black! Completely annihilates all the prejudice that someone might have about the racial factor in playing musical instruments!

  • first thought, this is awesome, second thought, this is in D

  • mickiew4: that's one of the most ignorant comments I've seen.

  • @ledongas6262 - But still funny, and far more popular than your comment.

  • This is def. D minor lol.C mixolidian maybe?

  • como jugandooo me encanta!!!

  • Il più grande bassista di tutti i tempi(basso elettrico naturalmente).

  • thats winning charlie

  • holy shit, he's in no-man's land at the bottom of that bass!

  • When Jimi played bass he was called Jaco

  • When Jime played bass he was called Jaco

  • Jaco, I wanna be you *.*

  • my mind has been blown...

  • Genius: Loving an art so much that you do something with it no one has ever thought of before.

  • the only time in history where two guys are playing bass...and the white guy is better than the black guy

  • @mickiew4 HAHAHAH THAT IS FUCKING CLASSIC!

  • @mickiew4 youtube.com/watch?v=xW0WXhJVkVo

  • @mickiew4 ...So far!

  • @mickiew4 i was just thinking that lol

  • @mickiew4 What a stupid comment...

  • @mickiew4 What an idiotic comment you've made!! That Black guy is the great Jerry Jemmott. Pastorius looked up to him, and if he wasn't great, he wouldn't be sitting in that chair exercising with Jaco. You folks are so quick to fire off without looking into a situation. What you're seeing are two different styles but that don't necessarily makes one better.

  • @mickiew4 hehehe so true!

  • @mickiew4

well, as we all know Jaco isnt exactly white...

    =D

  • @mickiew4 not unless jaco jammed with other black bassists. cuz he was the best EVER!

  • nice how he is ending with the opening scales of Bach's "Chromatic Phantasy" - which, by the way, is in D minor... I bet Johann Sebastian would have liked this.

  • has anyone else noticed that this is in D actually?

  • what makes you think this is wooten?

    it's Jerry Jemmot.

  • Tabs for this please? :)

  • @fefiss86 You need tabs for this?

Wooten's bass line is easy as shit, just check out the title - "Jam in C". Easy enough to hear

And if you would want to try Pastorius's solo, you would learn much more if you listened to it, and tried to play each phrasing by the time.

  • @arnythaking wooten? wtf are you blind?

  • @HiImJerry8 Sorry if I got the damn name wrong, I had just been watching a ton of Wooten vid's.

No need for fury and rage my good man. or girl, perhaps.

  • Is That Victor Wooden?

  • Wow. Really, I have nothing else to say. Just, wow.

  • Jaco must love that fucking bass cuz the mofo is torn up

  • this is in D hahah

  • 2 seconds in im like.... "this is in D" lol

  • @connorbassplayer

man and i sat like 5 minutes having trouble finding a C groove who sounded great with it, couldn't understand what the fuck i was doing wrong :P

  • @ddddddennis lol we've all been there haha

  • @connorbassplayer perfect pitch FTW!!

  • @connorbassplayer correct me if i'm wrong but just assuming it's c major for example wouldn't you also be able to play in d minor and it fit? at least it works on guitar anyhow... you know major minor major minor minor diminished seventh repeat?

  • @connorbassplayer ya i noticed that right away too

  • Building me my own Fender jazz bass. Watching Jaco makes me consider getting a maple neck...But I know that the rosewood gives a warmer sound.

  • @WeCamefortheDead Jaco actually generally used a fretless jazzbass with a rosewood (coated in boat epoxy) fretboard

all of his recording and most live performances were on that bass

  • @WeCamefortheDead I think he mentions that he plays with a precision neck on this bass if I'm not incorrect.

  • Como k es Re (D)

  • Yep. D

  • SO many people in my age say Jaco is overrated -.-

I mean what?! He was and still is one of the greatest bassists and he has really set the bar for solo bass playing. What you also have to think about is when he did come up with that stuff!!! His first album dates to 1973!

His phrasing, groove and note choice are stunning, especially for that time!

  • Does excercise 16 teach me to play like this?

  • i could chill to this for hours! why is it only 3:12 :(

  • Jaco Pastorius and Curtis Mayfield Jammin :D

  • @FunkySkunk90 - dude really looks like Curtis :D

  • This is in D

  • sorry man,but there`s no minor or major third on Jerry`s groove,so jaco played licks using both thirds(Major and Minor),both pentatonics and even licks from other scales(0:20 A harmonic Minor)

the 2:00 pattern is using the D major scale for example, but he used the D minor pentatonic most of the time

The root is D,but theres no Third in the Harmony,so it doesn`t matter,it is dorian, mixolidian, mel.minor, whatever

  • I`m sorry dude

    This jam is in D

  • Comment removed

  • what the...Jaco really strechin' 6 frets ??? by the way,the black dude looks like Curtis Mayfield

  • 'Dillos Rule" ...

  • it s not D it s D dorian . he plays on Dm7 so it s D dorian

    it s basic theory

  • it s not D it s D dorian . he plays on Dm7 so it s D dorian

  • I respect Jacos playing, but I don't particularly like his tone in this video.

  • @lightweight101 Hmm, what would you suggest? Less treble? I love how he gets those sharp, short, fast notes. I cant play like that. I cant play funk at all, not slap bass.

But I dont care about slap, I do however want to learn how to play that controlled.I think its a practice thing not so much as a learned thing. He probably had a bass in his arms 80% of his waking hours. What a genius and what a tragedy that befell him

  • @scumgod13 Me, I've always liked a more mellow, smooth tone on the bass. Don't get me wrong, I know that he does achieve just that on many songs, just not on this particular video. Everything else you said is bang on.

  • @lightweight101 Oh yea, the smooth mellowness is what drew me to him in the first place. I wasnt being sarcastic when I said what would you suggest, less tenner, less sharp notes. In this particular jam what really hits me is the short, sharp, perfectly executed notes.

  • 3:08 right hand idiot

  • makes you winder what he would of sounded like on guitar..

  • @HendrixClaptonSRV not really...

  • In D, not C

  • @daraghkinch Its both. I played over it and both C and D dorian match

  • RIC FERIBRACCI OWNS THE WORLD

  • @FedorLove27

no he does not, but he is pretty amazing.

  • by the way this is in D

  • @leeble611 duh...read the other comments, we all know...;)

  • @SaintUdnitz im glad u know

  • @leeble611 you're glad I know that everyone knows? well, glad to read that *lol*...btw dont piss yourself, I put the ;) smiley on purpose...
