This man made me discover syncopation! This was one of those "optical illusions" for the ears that had me mesmerised for years. I got a few of his first albums before he went jazzy. Where has he gone???
WHEN THIS RECORD FIRST CAME OUT, MY FRIEND BROUGHT IT OVER TO PLAY IT I BOUGHT IT FROM HIM ON THE SPOT ,WOULD'NT LET HIM LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH IT SAW JOE IN NYC @ THE OLD FILLMORE I THINK EXCELLENT SHOW
He should re-release this to capitalize on the Murdoch hacking scandal. "Is she really going out with him?" was the only big hit off this album (at least in the USA); there should have been 5 or 6, at least.
@bobo007xx Put "joe jackson look sharp used 8 track" in a Google image search, you'll see it, pinch-roller and all. They were just winding down sales of the players around that time, you could still get tapes for a while after that. I don't remember them ever sounding really good, though Look Sharp was good enough to appreciate, even in low fidelity.
I was a big joe jackson when i was younger. I had this 10" white vinyl ep and forgot how good it was . Great band, great songwriting and love the bass playing...................
@Jake29112 there isn't anything to this,,,the other is the video performance of the song and is really great!! Daily Motion also has a version of this w/ Joe reading something out of an American tabloid ..quite amusing
i always loved how the lyrics deflate the pompousness of the narrator... joe jackson seems to be getting more attention lately, which is necessary i guess when punk and post punk have been mined and re-mined over two decades...
No kidding. All these great singer songwriters that got their names in the 80s, I'd always wondered why more musicians don't cite guys like Joe Jackson as an influence. He wrote some great stuff!
I love the juxtaposition of the lyrics, which are really alienating and paranoid, against that strolling along on a sunny day, pedestrian sounding bass line. I know that sounds like I'm knocking the bass line, but that's not how I mean it at all. I think it's one of the best ever. Brilliant song!
This is awesome! Joe's vocals make it so, but Graham Maby's bass is classic. Most of his early stuff is written for Graham Maby's bass...it's perfect!
Truly one of the greatest albums of all time. Thankfully a new Joe Jackson on the up and up in the guise of Shane Barry and the Distractions. Check them out. Top class.

It's sad as a 2000's teen. I have to go back to the 60's to early 90's for better music with real talent.

is there anyone here who can think of a joe jackson song that is not social commentry?
brilliant, i would say that it is unfair that he has so few views, but he does not strike me as self absorbed, music for the sake of music

This song and Dirty Laundry turned me against the news media way back in the day.
Paul Simon once sang "I get all the news I need from the weather report".
