  • By far the standout song on Lonely Avenue. I'd heard that it wasn't quite up to par with Ben Folds' earlier work, but whoever said that was wrong; this song in particular is easily one of my favorite pieces of music ever.

  • Anyone notice who the taxi driver was?

  • D: what an upbeat and yet sad song..

  • For me It does'nt really matter if, I don't find my soulmate. I mean What is a soulmate after all? If I had him our relationship will be perfect because he's my soulmate..-he's perfect??

I mean. The thing is that guy may not be your soul mate, but at least you love him and he loves you back. That's what matters the most..-LOVE. Love IS perfect. Its just US that isn't. :)

  • @JamilSantiago Jesus Christ. Please shut up.

  • Oh the dreadful romantix!

  • No, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's unfair. UNFAIR I TELL YOU. Perfectly alright for someone who has their soulmate to go on about the good side of never finding them. But fork you. There is no good side. It's just unfair.

  • this damn song will not get out of my mind

  • its sad...

  • This song reminds me a ton of Maneater by Hall and Oates...

  • In my opinion this is his best song

  • All my CD Collection Needs, Is Ben Folds & Frank Zappa, That`s it Sorted.

  • "And it's not like they were ever actually unhappy in the lives they lived."

  • Wow,

    This is REALLY good.

Like, REALLY REALLY good Ben!! You and your music and this music video just makes it A POLISHED performance!

I'm realy happy for you :) nice one

  • Kind of sad, given the art style they chose... huh... good song none the less, I'd rather listen to a good song with a sad message then bad song with a good one.

  • This song tears me up every time. I feel like this happens more often than we think.

  • Forever Alone.

  • I'll admit I'm a little depressed now.

  • This is going to possibly be my parent's Song (He Married Martha, She Married Tom).

  • @yugoroth1

Nice, but probably a bad idea. This song is about people never finding the right ones for them, and I'd hope your parents did.

  • @MaidenRocks99 I disagree. This song is about how there is one perfect person and people may not find that person. Near the end of the song it he say that he has that person. How art comes from that quest to find that one true soul mate. How he is unlucky because he has found his soulmate and missed out on that quest to find his soulmate because he found her.

  • @rpdonovan315

Maybe I phrased wrong by saying "never," but the song is still mainly about people missing out on their soul mates. The song doesn't say that the two found each other; it just shows that in the video although they are immediately separated to heaven and hell.

And that's why it says things such as "Maybe we owe the unlucky ones." Those who never find their soul mates may be how certain artistic pieces are created, the great novels and ballads, poetry and song.

  • 8 people thought this was a Death From Above 1979 song.

  • I instantly fell in love with this song....

  • wow all this reading into it... i think the whole thing of her going to hell and him to heaven is that even in the afterlife they couldn't be together.

  • favorite song on the victoria's secret playlist right now.

  • this song is so smart, nick hornby is a genius

  • This was the only song I loved listening to when i worked at Old Navy. Thank you Ben (:

  • Well she must have done something pretty big and nasty if her soul gets eternal damnation so I think he got off lucky not getting involved with her after all.

  • @LightsOfBohemia r u fuckin' kidding me?

I rather have a life with 'the love of my life' and then go to Hell than havin' it with somebody else, whatever consequences that may bring.

All that assuming, of course, that there's such a thing like Heaven or Hell.

  • @Warhammero All that assuming, of course, that there's such thing as 'the love of your life'.

And in the context/universe of this video it's pretty clear that the afterlife exists. Anyway, what I mean is that deep inside she must be a more evil person than what meets the eye, and thus I can't feel very sorry for her.

  • This video isn't available on iTunes, is it? Is this the official music video?

  • Soul mates...i always thought that saying was bullshit, untill...i met her!

I cant stop thinking about her.

But im happy...that she is happy...even if it is with somebody else.

  • @PaddyMcGarrity I understand you all too well, my friend..

  • 3:36 it looks like he's about to grab her boob o_O

  • nice animation! what a sad story :(

  • haha Ben Folds looks like Roger the Alien in this.

  • That ticket guy reminds me of this famous piano player.

  • the 6 dislikes were mistakes.

  • That exactly happened to me,we meet at middle school, we used to live near from each other several years, but we never saw again after school, then she got married, I got married, and after 23 years we found each other again, we both got divorced and now we know we belong together I love her, and all I know she's the woman of my life. Besides, I just went to see Ben Folds live last saturday and he played this song, I got enough signals already, lol.

  • @mtymech That, sir, is awesome.

  • @mtymech Go for her!!!! You can do it!!!

  • the lady goes to hell? nooo

  • I really like the part at 2:20

  • Thats so sad D: This is a good video

  • So this video is about 2 people who are made for each other, but they never cross paths, until one day they both ironically die in a tragic car accident with each other due to a squirrels idiocy. Then when it appears they can finally be together, one of them goes to hell

    I think I'm gonna cry

  • @onelastmbrady :........(

  • I mean, I hate to say it, but Ben Fold's is totally right about this. Maybe some of us will actually be with our soulmates someday. But probably not.

  • This song makes me really sad :<

  • i love the idea of soulmates and how we dont even know who they are ... sad but it feels like real life :/

  • CRAZY.

  • Tom Waits and Ben Folds and Nick Hornby....

  • Who's the girl singing? Is it Kate-Miller?

  • 5 people are lost and sad and small.

  • For some reason I always see this as the perfect theme for Doctor Who. I just see him feeling this way.

  • @CaptainEzzy

Especially when it comes to River. Poor Doctor.

  • @CaptainEzzy you are soooo right <3

  • This song made me really sad.

  • Thanks WXPN 99.7 FM!

    -Jerry in Carlisle, PA

  • 5 People have never walked past their soul mate.

  • this reminds me alot of the movie 'alot like love'

  • Cartoon Ben Folds is so cute.

  • charlieissocoollike led me here

  • @lebagelboy Ben Folds led me to charlieissocoollike (: and Alex Day and my future husband (if it doesn't work out with Ben), Tom Milsom.

  • @daFAJAs And he's cool enough to pull something like that off, isn't he?

  • I wish I know all the lyrics. Some words are hard to make out

  • Does anyone know who the female voice is?

    Should I know that?

  • @desaden Yes, it's Kate Miller-Heidke. A singer from Brisbane, Australia.

  • i love how he mde a song that is sad but put it to a pop beat and made it fun is amzing!

  • this is my irst time watching this and i have to say, what kind of a movie is this?? lol thats so sad how they dont even get together and then they die and she goes to hell while the guy goes to heaven?? thats soo jank! :( lol but i really admire you, ben folds! :) <3

  • they should keep working together, ben + nick = epic.

  • Wow that...was amazing.

  • This is how I met my wife. In a car crash. lived to tell the tale though :) . excellent song

  • love this

  • I can't stop listen this GREAT song! I wanna hug people, who made it! So amazing music & video. Why people don't listen this, but listen Bieber's crap?!

  • I hate you SAM MAYES

  • Harhar I love Ben Folds but why does he have to an arsy-bastardy who just had to do THAT at 3:12?! Evil evil evil....

  • I dislike the warbling e.g 2:41. I went to see him live in Sheffield and he ROCKED! But the supporting group's singer did this warbling too (perhaps it's the same person). The pity is, her normal voice is gorgeous but she loves this pseudo-operatic style which was then and still is out-of-place and grating I find. LOVE this song though! Big fan of Ben Folds, shame he isn't broadcast enough when we hear utter tripe on the radio! Bring back Ben I say!!

  • @cbeale1 Kate Miller-Heidke is the "warbler", and she was trained classically (i.e., trained as an operatic singer). But she later decided to write her own music and make pop music, which Ben heard, and she has collaborated with him on tours and songs. She does more "warbling" in Saskia Hamilton. Look up some of her stuff, a great Aussie musician!!

  • @cbeale1 Wouldn't have that problem if you listened to Triple J. He's well-represented on Australia's best music music station evarrrr

  • @JonoSasson it's just a shame about her voice I find, because I know opera and she really can't do it - perhaps why she's ventured to other pastures. Her normal voice sounds great which is the other thing, I'm just confused as to why anyone thinks it sounds better than her actual voice. I'll have to check out "Triple J" and get back to you :)

  • see Tim Minchin's If I didn't have you

  • Awesome music, words, video! We need more songs like this!

  • @solitarysage13 I just linked a few friends to this video with basically that message and then I read this. Great minds :D

  • i guess we all live on lonely avenue

  • i know i do

  • @Pinkland21 Sure, Tom Waits wrote a song called Martha. The story is that they were together when they were younger and the song is basically of a phonecall that he has with her after 40 years, after they've both married others and had kids, and tells her he loves her..the thing with that song was that they're meant to be..and this song looks at their spouses, without the focus being on Tom and Martha... I don't know if I explained that well, go listen to the song, it's really beautiful.

  • This video is better than Hitler's Kill:Death Ratio.

  • Todd in the Shadows led me here

  • @conchamolusco OMG, ME TOO!!! :D

  • @conchamolusco

    eurkea for me

  • @conchamolusco Pushing Up Roses led me here :P

  • Ben Folds is the reason I'd rather be blind than deaf.

His partnership with Nick Hornby sure turned out well. Lonely Avenue's one hell of an album.

  • The pairing of Nick Hornby and Ben Folds cannot go wrong!

  • Hey somica2, the state of the music industry can be summed up in 1 swearword beginning with F and ending with D. I suppose that somebody should ban torrents but I think we are some way off. I still think good music has some value!

  • To all of those desperately attempting to prove how you're the biggest-best-most-legit-super-cool-superfan of Ben Folds, cut it out. It's music, pop music at that. In fact, Ben Folds writes songs that make fun of people like you, many of them actually.

  • Nick Hornby and Ben Folds are a perfect compliment to one another. Couldn't imagine this to work out as well between any two other popular authors or musicians.

  • Is that Kate Miller Heidke?

  • Saw Ben at HMV Institute Birmingham last Saturday-great gig-shame people there hadn't picked up the strengths of this album as much as his back catalogue-I felt I was singing along alone at times. Great album-check out Katy Miller-Heidke too-haven't enjoyed a support act as much as her in years.

    Phil

  • @greenguitarman dont worry i was singing along as well the gig was amazing! even if i did have to go alone! shame more people dont know about him!

  • @hamsterboy89 I went with my 18 year old son so he spans the generations-Loved the song he made up on the spot for the heckler-brilliant. Only one thing spoiled it for me-the irritating american girl who barged her way to the front and then proceded to act out every song like she was Kate Bush or something-urghhhhh!!!

  • @greenguitarman i enjoyed the whole night apart from the 4 or 5 guys who thought it was necessary and acceptable to make a mosh pit! the dicks, im only 21, i fell in love with folds music about 3 years ago, i now have pretty much everything hes recorded, on my last fm page he is ahead in plays by nearly 2000 plays,

  • the guy at the ticket booth for the movit theater looks like Ben Folds :)

  • @nillie1234 The taxi driver too :)

  • very rare that a video perfectly links to a song...this is one of those very rare occasions.

  • Very rare that a video perfectly links to the song...this is one of those very rare occasions.

  • bliss.........I love this

ben folds you are my God!

  • bliss.........I love this

ben folds you are my God!

  • Ben Folds you will forever and always be an inspiration to me..

  • best song ever!!

  • this is an amazing song, made my eyes water.

  • @TheYellowTractor Yeah, honestly, I love the song, and it sounds so upbeat, and I was fine until those last solo piano notes and the end of the song. Just killed me, the perfect sad turn and I instantly teared up. Beautiful sadness! :)

  • @arlojeremy I agree completely :) The end gets me too, and the video definately helps!

  • alright ben didn't write the lyrics for this song so please don't cry and be like" omg ben is the best songwriter evar" amazing songwriter/amazing lyricist just not on this song

  • @abaofifsz yeah, but you could totally go on about nick hornby's songwriting talents.

  • @jomahagen Yup. also the cab driver i believe.

  • that was so sad it actually made me teary eyed. and i got goosebumps from hearing that song :o

amazing, its in parr with my favourite song by say anything >.< (who are my favourite band)

  • W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L

  • This is the neatness.

  • does ben do a cameo as the guy in the ticket booth?

  • O.k. I had never heard a Ben Folds song before...but I can say with full certainty that I am now a Ben Folds fan. I've never fallen in love with a song like I just did.

  • @TNLMProductions Welcome...its a beautiful journey when you find Ben Folds.

  • who sings with him on this?

  • @colorguardgurl24 susaka hamilton. if i spelled that right xD

  • @zanman42 saskia hamilton, close enough xD but thanks!

  • @colorguardgurl24 Actually, not Saskia Hamilton, that's a contemporary American poet that he and Nick Hornby wrote a song about. Kate Miller-Heidke is the female singer on this song.

  • @supersingerevan ahhh thanks! I thought it was a little odd when someone said it was Saskia Hamilton.

  • I love this song but... At the risk of starting a flame way, I have to say I don't agree with it. I am more inclined to follow the line of Tim Minchins song "If I Didn't Have You Someone Else Would Do." Love isn't something planned out by some divine force, we could fall in love with anyone. It isn't about "belonging" to someone. Still love the song =)

  • wooooooohoooooo!!!!! i've searched for weeks to this video since i saw it in TV!

awesome video, awesome song, it really touched me.

yuuupi!! llevo ya semanas buscando este video desde que lo vi en la tele. me encanta, uno de los mejores videoclips que he visto y no he visto pocos... me ha gustado especialmente los dos chicos del final que están con sendas novias, ifelices, claro.

  • I definitely like the acknowledgement of homosexuality.

  • I heard an interview once with Sting (v pompous and pretentious) but he said that the best songs are written when you're sad. I really like Hornby's take on that - we owe the unlucky ones. And Ben's cheerful but sincere music fits it perfectly. Fab.

  • I love the music and the way he sings but the message is (in my opinion) complete bullshit. The idea of soulmates is absurd. Some people will be compatible with you, some won't, but you can't spend your life sighing for the idea of someone you don't even know while you're underappreciating what you have. You have a great relationship but you want to end it because you have a "feeling" that your true soulmate is out here? You're an idiot. No wonder I hated that stupid movie, 'Serendipity'.

  • These two should work together on an album

I love Ben Folds' voice, he makes it look so easy and yet his notes are always right on point

  • @InuvikPhil They did work together on an album, that's what this song is from - look up Lonely Avenue :P

  • @InuvikPhil lol they did!!! its called lonely avenue

  • Fantastic work! Great job, so much fun!

  • I hate it when music videos can not bring justice to their song, and more often than not seem to have no actual connection to it. I am pleased to say that is not the case in the video. I am pleased.

  • I love Ben Folds!!!

  • 4 people obviously live down below..

  • Not a big pop listener, but this song is catchy as fuck. i hate the lyrics though.

  • @Dethkill14 Hehe, Ben will be happy. Nick, not so much :)

  • I don't often cry when I hear a song.... this one hit a weak spot. Thanks Ben & Nick for a fantastic.... well whatever this is.

  • @metaforest PUSSY

  • @RedEggsCereal Oh really? Listen you miserable little PearChan you should spend more time scribbling your crack addled line doodles on toiletpaper squares... rather than trolling comments here. At least your efforts to communicate by drawing may have potential.

  • @metaforest :| wow

    ok well i was kidding

    CHILL BRO

  • @RedEggsCereal I don't know you. You don't know me. You wrote something insulting in response to my positive comment about this video. If you had said that to me in person... you'd likely be spitting teeth, and you know it. Grow up. Take responsibility for your comment. I think your epithet applies more to you than me at this point.

  • @metaforest DROP IT

Its HIGHLY unlikely that anyone you argue with on youtube will agree with you

do u really expect me to just agree with you completely and type up a long comment talking about how

sorry i am for saying what i said to you? NO? then shuddup

Theres no point in wasting your time typing up responses

I will say that i DO feel a bit bad now so i guess youve accomplished something

but there really is no point in furthering this conversation

  • @metaforest Me too, man. Me too. The only song ever to achieve that. I wouldn't have cried if I wasn't in such a bad place after a nasty break-up, but still. This song is... like that.

  • Reminds me of Ana Ng by TMBG, the content I mean, not musically. Really sad, I love the video, it illustrates the point nicely, I especially liked the foldy bit s at the end.

  • @travisowens I completely agree :|

  • Been there…..

  • This happens too....saddening and scary!

  • @ SileSomers ur not the only overlap, I really liked the Martha/Tom reference as well, also love both songs

  • when i first heard this song i said to myself, "its just another great Ben Folds collaberation" but as i listened to it more its an even more beautiful piece of work. It's so true too. Yes, we all have soul mates but theres a small chance of ever meeting but, these two didnt. Like the old saying syas;s "Love is blind"
