ES come in at above average intelligence. So I wouldn't exactly say they aren't bright .They can be stubborn and they have a VERY high prey drive which distracts them especially outdoors. Not to be biased, but my setter is actually pretty cleaver. And can do everything my well trained Golden could do, just not as quickly. But my setter is absolutely THE most loving dog I've had the pleasure of knowing! Even if he is a pain in the a**e at times! ;)
They are very high maintenance, requiring lots of play and grooming (to keep that unrivaled beauty), they salivate a lot, aren't very bright, I dunno about health issues but it was probably a heart issue that suddenly took mine at 11 years (about their average lifespan I hear) he also had hip problems from time to time (common in spaniels and setters apparently). They are totally non-aggressive, and probably the most loving creatures there could ever be.
@2DragonGalz They are for bird hunting and thats what they are "made" for.
However like they say, they are high maintenance, they need to run and they need to run a lot, they demand a lot of activity and got no problems running for a day and even more.
The hips is a common problem, so are the ears which are "oversized" and might develop infections and should be looked after.
Personally I want one, but I have to pass it up as I do not have a fitting lifestyle or time to give one a good home.
Actually, they are one of the lower risk breeds for hip dysplasia. In any case, research the dog's family history before you buy no matter what, so this can be avoided, as its genetic.
Setters are not going to be the most obedient dogs outside. This doesn't mean they're not bright. My setter is very smart, and inside, obeys all commands. But outside all he cares about are birds and squirrels.
@2DragonGalz I know thye can get heart adn hi[ displasia. If you go to a breder they are supposed to check for all the herditary problems. FOr more?'s you can contact a breeder or rescue group. I prefer rescue since there are allot of homeless dogs prubred or mix
thanks for sharing! ES is my fav and it is lovely to see them playing!
