It made sense to me after I read the description of what was going on, on the Wikipedia page.

Something about how every living thing has it's own AT field that separates it's soul from others. The Seele organization wanted humans to merge as one and become a super-being. Rei had become one with Adam and was the catalyst for breaking-down the AT fileds, but Shinji rejected the process because he had finally accepted his individuality.

So someone finally gave Hideaki Anno free reign and more money than God and told him to remake NGE as he wished. My rational mind screams in protest, but it looks to epic to ignore.

Well, for *this* movie. The general impression is that as the plot goes further, they're going to deviate from the original more and more. They're introducing new characters, they've confirmed the ending will be completley new, and there are new scenes.

Also, on a somewhat more weird note, there's a rumor going around that they're changing Asuka's last name. Not sure if that one's true, mind you, that's just a rumor. Not sure why they would.

Well, what you saw in this video is a remake of an anime that is already released in its entirety called "Neon Genesis Evangelion." This particular movie hasn't been released in the U.S. yet. Watch the anime on DVD, I know they sell the complete box sets at Best Buy. And please buy the DVDs, the anime industry is in ruins right now because massive amounts of people are not buying the anime anymore and instead just watching it online for free. Well, the reason they are changing her last name is that it was actually a mess up for her to be called what she was in the original show to begin with. Asuka's original name was that of an aircraft carrier in WWII, when other characters in the series(Ristuko for example) were using those type of names(of other aircraft carriers of WWII). They changed her name to match Rei's last name (Ayanami's a destroyer), so it would fit better for them being "equals".

@TheShockMaster I think the Name change was so that her name would match with Rei's and Mari's. They had no need for theme Naming when there were only 2 female Pilots.

The EVAs were awesome to begin with. I wish they'd stop whoring this series. It was fantastic when it came out and I'm tired of the remakes and the remakes of the remakes. I have the original show and I never needed more.

See it is not a remake. It has been taken as a sequel to the series. Basically everyone eventually reverts out of the LCL and the same things that happen before happen again including the Angels. Which is why Kaworu says "The Third One Hasn't changed" because time repeats itself.
