  • All hail the juggling monkey

  • Are there any difference between the cd version and the MVS version?

  • @yerdyi other than the loading times, the only difference is the music.

  • Dang, my browser gets stuck on the advertisement. And when I try to play it, then YouTube player does not work anymore!

  • I find it funny how everyone hates this genre today and it made two of the most popular memes around.

  • I like the juggling monkey, but im biased that way.

  • its like absolute clone

  • My god! The music on the cd version is soooo gorgeous!!!

  • 10 dislikers don't have the time to go to the fridgerator and grab another beer.

  • My local flee market had an Aes console with 5 games for $450. Couldnt affored it because my wife will kill me. So i bought the neo geo cd at my favorte import store. After a while i said to my self i will sell it to the guy i know at the flee market and ask if he can drop the price as well also sold an n64 with alot of games. The only thing i payed as the remander was 140 bucks. Thankfull nobody bought it because he had it for 4 months.

  • I miss 2D shooters, I wish developers were still making them for the newer consoles.

Slowdown was a major issue with these games. I remember when R-Type came out for the SNES. Fantastic looking game, great music, but the game couldn't persist for more than a few minutes without slowing down.

  • Great looking and sounding game....thanks courteous Neo Geo CD!

  • Nice but there's one shooter you won't find on Sega's and that's called BLAZING STAR (succesor to PULSTAR), it will only cost you a lung or a few PS3's but the title is insane in visuals alone.

  • @gamecollect101 Shit yeah, its awesome. Its everything Pulstar shouldve been!! Ive got both on MVS and Pulstar on NEO CD, however i want to get them both for AES one day...

  • Wow, looks just like the R-Type ship, the front shield and also the diagonal bouncing lasers... Not a big fan of losing all power ups and check points for shooters though.

  • When you get a good game, you play it for years. It's hard when you're a reviewer.

  • This is R-Type, formula 101. Nothing bad with that though.

  • Ikaruga Graphics > Pulstar Graphics :D

  • @boba1mighty Ikaruga was built on hardware that came almost 10 years later. Also, 2D visuals always age better than 3D.

  • @samuraispiritsx yeah, i know, but i dont really pay attention to age of games.

i think of games similar to music. It is what it is, and it will always be there, and its up for you to decide for yourself how you feel about it.

  • That was some beautiful music in the stage after the loading part.

  • Juggling monkey ftw! lol

  • Oh, i hope to see viewpoint as well here!

    Uber hard.

  • PLEASE PLEASE review r type final r type delta and gradius v

  • Yes it was a complete ripoff of R-Type, but SNK seemed to be masters of ripping off other people's stuff, ie, Burning Fight, Final FIght, King of Fighters, Street Fighter etc. It is a really great game though, and the music is amazing on the Neo CD.

  • hahahaha... "The dreaded juggling monkey!!"

  • Ultra-hardcore shooter, beautiful and brilliant.

  • Gorgeous game, like Mark says. Wow. I had never heard of it before this review. Too bad it's rare and the loading time/lag is so brutal.

  • @classof77 If you can get your hands on the Neo-Geo CDZ, which is the double-speed version of the original Neo-Geo CD system, the loading times are not bad at all.

  • if you showed me this game without the title, I'd probably say it was r-type

  • crash bandicoot on GNC had very generous load times

  • i love all the smooth jazz on classic game room.

  • Juggling Monkey would later go on to have his fur shaved and appear on Jackass under the name 'Steve-O'.

  • I have this on my ds (neods) and I have to say it's amazing. When seen side by side, u can see that the graphics rival some ds games. Since the ds is about as powerful as the n64 (if not more), and considering the time difference, pulstar is amazing graphicswise.

  • AHHHHHHHH, Pulstar!!!!! Loved it.

    NEO CD was poop though

  • ah, nostalgia....

  • this is such an r-type clone that irem should have sued for copyright infringement

  • awsome game i want a neo geo.crazy graphics i love it.

review twisted metal black please i think ill keep asking u till u do.

    bye

  • ..sequels, "three-quels" and what not, can't be classics. they're based off the first games. lol

  • Classic =/= original. Sequels can very well be "classics", I can even name a few, if you'd like.

  • this may sound ignorant and immature, but with all due respect, please tell me some sequels. i dont know any.

  • Alright, just some of the top of my head: System shock 2. Fallout 2. Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Worms 2. Duke Nukem 3D. Megaman 2. Super Mario World 2. Super Mario Land 2. Super Mario Bros 3. Street Fighter 2. Majoras Mask. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Soul Calibur. I'm forgetting tons here, but you get the idea. If you want to count games that aren't direct sequels then you'll have even more. Sonic, Crash Bandicoot, Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy, Spyro, Pitfall, etc.
  • thank you. now i know some classic sequels. thanks! i DEFINATLY agree with any rpgs, like fallout

  • nice...last resort is cool as well

  • Gamecube is ass, there are no classics on it.

  • I liked the controller though. Oh, and SSBM was always fun. Plus that dope ass handle on the back of it. GC wasn't the worst thing ever.

  • Yeah, Resident Evil 4 was in no way a classic.

  • resident evil 4 is for PS2 also..

  • He has done most of the consoles you just listed.

  • The monkey isn't even juggling lol...

  • well, no doubt the AES version has little Slowdown but its like... $500.

  • I want to get this game but its too expensive

  • lol we love that monkey xD

  • The graphics are really good considering this game is over a decade old and the looks like a lot of fun

  • You have to remember the games were on CDs though. That usually allows there to be tons of graphical space.

  • It looks just like R-Type

  • Wow! That is some of the best 2D Grafics I have ever seen!

  • Is it just me, or does the juggling monkey look really scared of something?

  • he's afraid of failing...and lag.

  • how about the 3-on-3 FIGHTER? OR SAMURAI SHODOWN?

  • Same game,Different back grounds = Fail.

  • are you kidding me? The atmosphere (music, characters) is different in Samurai Shodown, you have weapons, the pace is slower because you need to anticipate moves... you sir are fail.

  • Wow, that's not an R-Type style game.. that IS R-Type. Right down to the enemies and the level design.

  • Ooh, it's like R-Type Gaiden. <3

  • 32 GIGS OF SPEED O_O wtf?

  • wow...pretty good graphics for 95'...None of my friends had a neo-geo. This game also reminds me of Gradius for NES.

  • Project Dino's logo was the same as the Ferrari Dino's logo from the 70's.

  • And is that beautiful stock music very much of that time too?

Ya know, when we all grew our hair out and watched Rockford Files and Dallas?

  • you sould geta avs neo geo cart so you dont have to wait for the loading times yes pulstar is assome so is blazing stars

  • i have this game it is...AWSOME fricking monky

  • NOT THE MONKEY!

  • iSummerboy18, of course you would.....you have no soul and only respond to achingly trendy ads for over priced shit.

And 32gigs of Speed??? Love when people know fuck all about what they're saying.

  • 32 gigs of speed? DAYAMN!

  • i was amazed at the graphics

  • the music is radical

  • lmao at loading screen, eeheheheh

  • Looks like you used a composite cable for this review?

  • Shove your overpriced plastic up your ass.

I'm with Vectrex and Neo Geo CD!

  • congrats, you're a retard!

  • Game looks amazingly beautiful.

  • Your skills in spaceship shooter games never cease to amaze me.

  • The load times are due more 2 the console than the game. The cd drive was SLOW AS.

  • omg @ the loading times.. and umm, it looks fantastic, but for my taste its a bit slow...

  • I didn't realize just how much they took from R-Type for this game. Were the same people involved?

  • F NeoCD MVS FTW

  • Could you review operation flashpoint: Cold War Crisis?

  • Yes! That will be cool.

  • Review Axelay dammit.

  • To all you emulator people: In my opinon, you are not playing a classic NES game if you are playing it with any other thing that your NES-controller, TV and NES (or a FC twin or a toploader etc.)

  • The loading times were the reason I sold my NGCD and switched to the MVS...Last blade 2 was almost unplayable.

  • That looks fantastic, very impressive for the age of the system.

  • hope you get blazing Star eventually.

  • i'm not entirely sure but i don't think blazing star is on the neo cd, pretty sure it's only mvs and jap aes... also pulstar is not jerky on the aes it's just the limitations of the cd console doing that.

  • you are right, this game looks awesome (especialy compared to newer sidescrollers or verticalscrollers like the new raiden)

  • What's the juggling monkey music track name? I love that kind of soothing music

  • It looks really great!

  • I like Monkeys...I'm an Angels fan.

  • this game looks so good :D

  • I have this game for Neo Geo.... on my computer :P

This where emulation wins. NO SLOWDOWN.

But this is also where you lose.

The game is so hard, you wish you could turn on the slowdown.

  • Uh, apparently you have never played with an emulator.

Graphical and physical glitches everywhere....game may run at awkward speeds..you're not (usually) using the same controller, therefore if you're used to the old game there might be a learning curve for the new joystick...

And then emulators for SNES can NEVER get the sound right....

  • Get a new computer, all emulators work from the 32-bit/64-bit era work perfect on my machine (other than Saturn)

    SNES? Perfect, Neo Geo? Perfect.

Its your computer...don't talk for everyone else.

  • Have a "new computer"

Apparently you're not telling me everything, and you need to come out with details.

What's your actual specs of your computer, and what emulators are you using?

  • Almost any PC should be able to run SNES and Neo-Geo....

  • @snkjack

    do does the old xbox

presty much anything cept fer ps2 dc saturn and nexgen sys

  • @snkjack My shitty laptop can't :D

  • Beautiful memories I had with this game. But Mark seems a lot better on this game than I was. I found this game to be very hard, yet was awesome back in the latter half of 90s. I want my NeoGeo CD again...

  • Theres another game like this call Blazin star i believe. It's easier in my opinion.

  • those bosses dont look as hard as in r type which if u ask me is a good thing cos some of em are crazy hard

  • That game IS R*TYPE!! Like it's a pretty close rip-off of R*TYPE!!

  • That dreaded monkey probably isn't on the AES version.

Assuming that this game isn't CD exclusive, that is.

  • R-Type is the best SHMOP °-°

  • You got a bit of a cold coming there Mark?

  • That monkey owns.

  • What's the juggling monkey music?

  • the best R-Type ripoff ever !!

not only that but it has a..

    Robotech / Macross

    reference and a hot

    green hair anime

    chick in the intro too...

i wonder who she is ?

  • Of course this game is gonna be hard it is an arcade game made to eat ur quarters

  • juggling monkey!!!

  • I WANT GRADIUS BACK

  • yes,,, I will grab another beer, thank you

  • That game is very much like a Life Force/R-Type hybrid. That fire level rips things off from Life Force.

  • Well it is more of a r-type clone.Though the reason for is simple. The game was made by ex-staff from irem.

Btw one of my favorites on my neo geo mvs.

Sure it's pattern based but i enjoy it.

  • Great game. Love SNK

  • That little space ship sure does have alotta guns!! lol

  • i really wanted a NEO GEO, but the price and load times scared me off. hey what is that music from at 0:09 ?

    another great review btw!

  • The AES or a Consolized MVS don't have load times.

  • N64

  • the aes/mvs version has no slowdowns and no load time with better animation.

  • this game is over ten years old.and was released for a cosole from the 16 bit era.

  • no shit sherlock

  • redballyou is a failtard

  • N00B it has been out since 1995

  • this came out on the neogeo a long time ago

  • is that a serious question

  • Obviously it is not.

  • sWEET

  • looks like a good game, when i get a neo-geo cd i will prob get this game. BTW has anyone played r-type on the sharp x68000 computer...it's a b@#%*

  • This game NEEDS to be on the Neo Geo channel of the Wii's Virtual Console. The fact that it isn't is just one more reason for me to by the classic consoles I want instead of waiting forever for the games from those consoles to appear on the VC.

  • The monkey is my fav part

  • Nice 1 Mark

  • wow

    the graphics are amazing

  • Nice review Mark! I've been hoping you'd do some more Neo Geo and Neo Geo CD reviews. Pulstar is undeniably beautiful, but just a little *too* ball-busting most of the time. Blazing Star, the somewhat of a follow-up to Pulstar, is much more fun and forgiving...not quite as atmospheric as Pulstar, and you don't get the sweet intro's to the stages, but you get a lot more out of the gameplay with more of a selection of ships and less stage memorization is required.

  • chinga tu madre? :O

  • That second level you show, the cave one; it reminded me of the awesome movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

  • The graphics are pretty damn cool.

  • nice music

  • the dreded juggling monkey!lol

  • if you have a turbo graphix 16 u might like Psychosis

  • looks like an R-type clone, but in a good way.

  • cool graphics

  • Ypur 1st neo geo cd review :D

  • Go monkey!

    Go monkey!

    Go!

  • How'd this game not result in a lawsuit from Irem? LOL.

  • lol @elevator music :'D

  • Comment removed

  • mokey lol

  • That looks so beautiful !

  • This reminds me of x2 no relief for the ps1 wich is one of my fave games ever.

  • this isn't like r-type, this IS r-type. seriously the ships, power-ups and enemies are all in R-Type, they must've released this under this name by accident or something

  • the graphics are so ahead of 1995!!

    that's 2000 style

  • i love the sound effects and explosions there great!

  • wow nice start with the NG-CD reviews, this is one of my favorite games for it :D

  • This reminds me of a new game i just got for the Dreamcast, Last Hope: Pink Bullets. Good stuff.

  • Last Hope is a good game, have you played Dux??

  • Yes, I also have Dux. I haven't played it much though. I probably should give it another shot. I remember dying a lot to things that sort of blended into the background. There was a lot of bright colors in that game.

  • I love the music and the graphics design in this game!

This is the proof that graphics matter.

  • Yeah graphics matter, but are less important then gameplay.
