Why does almost every non-Highland piping video garner some sort of comment about Highland piping, or try to offer a comment originating from a GHB frame of reference?
Once and for all: GHB are ONE kind of bagpipes, ONE piping subculture among many. Other, non-GHB piping traditions are distinct entities unto themselves. Which is to say uilleann pipers CAN and DO develop ENTIRELY independently of the GHB pipe band scene, and have done so since the 1700s!
@piobairesicago , hey man, take it easy. I was only making a joke. I am well aware of the differences between different kinds of pipes. I was not trying to make highland pipe references, only pointing out what I found humorous in the video.
And please don't think that I'm a typical run-of-the-mill pipe band, march playing highland piper. I play a concert pitch pipe to play with other instruments, and I play mostly this same kind of music.
Tommy did a lot of sacrifices here to create a beautiful, flowing blend with Peadar's fiddling style. When playing solo, Tommy had an incredible staccato style which is judged by many as a real cornerstone under the tradition of Irish piping. I am proud to say that Tommy and I were friends and I will never forget him. My one regret is that I did not meet him earlier in life. An hour of his piping was recorded on video in 1989, two years before his death. I cherish that video. Tommy, R.I.P.!
What amazing musicians these gentlemen were! They play so closely together that it sounds like one instrument! I downloaded "The Salamanca" and "Tom Steele" as played by Tommy Reck in order to help me learn those tunes. His chanter is in B and mine is D, but thanks to Audacity, I was able to convert it so I can play along! For anyone learning the uilleann pipes, listen as much as you can to excellent pipers like Tommy Reck!
Holy shit! Tommy Reck was, in my opinion, the greatest piper ever! As far as I know, he is only available to hear on a single cassette tape (not DVD, and one DVD anthology cut. This is indeed a thrill!
@redhairedlad -- On that recording he has a very infectious reel timing, loosely dotted. It's easy to find partial clips to hear and well worth a purchase.
He'd wanna get rid of that pipe from his mouth

I absolutely love the way Tommy doesn't move a muscle in the face, other than adjusting the pipe. Awesome attitude.

Ahhh, now I know why the invented the bellows. So you could smoke your pipe and play at the same time. :) Classic! Great music in this video!
