@SpockBoy It's not an English accent--Bankhead was American. It was just an affected manner of speaking that Bankhead adopted, and if you listen to Bankhead's voice, Harper nailed it pretty well here.
@drewqq Ahhh I stand corrected.:) Very posh American though. Reminds of those 1930's movies where the New York actresses would over enunciate certain words to sound sophisticated. I honestly don't think Valerie has it. I'm a voice actor myself and she doesn't have the depth (which is no easy feat)
@SpockBoy - When "talkies" began, the studios hired voice coaches and taught movie actors enunciation - they all talked that way, even through the 1940's. Some silent screen stars didn't make the switch to talkies. The "accent" isn't quite British, nor is it American... somewhere in between... Its called "Mid-Atlantic."
One of the worst plays I ever saw at the Pasadena Playhouse, and if you've ever seen a lot of plays there, you know that's saying something...I dont know what they did to it before it went to Broadway, but it had to be a major overhaul...brrrrrr
I never recall Taluuu acting so inebriated. This is a joke. Sorry Val... Who in the world was your director? Because I WOULD have fired him/her... I know I love you Val and I know you could be really good as Taluuu.... But what were they thinking with this characterization?
I saw this in Washington. Harper was brilliant and she received a standing ovation. This IS stage acting. The last row of the highest balcony needs to see and hear the performance too. You're watching 24" from a tiny screen. Tallulah was an over-the-top character and always on stage. She was an exaggeration of herself off stage and a great actress on stage.
@SpaceCowboy641 She actually nailed her,her phonetics and this was based on a lost tape of a voice over. Tallulah really was a bit "tipsy" and she did say all of those things. Oh I adore Tallulah, but this was in the late 60s ? Valarie Harper did a wonderful job.
I love stick comedy and I have a good sense of humor but this is just awful. It's nothing like Tallulah, she was known for being the outspoken life of the party type that made people life and was fun to be around. This is just awful.
not as dreadful as i feared, the look is great, the voice is pretty good, though at times its a bit more elaine stritch. Dont care for the way she tosses her head back, and plays a little too drunk.still not bad though...
The clip is pretty bad but I just saw the show and she is actually really pretty amazing...it probably wasn't a good idea to take these bits out of context of the entire performance.
@Beejjjjjj If You are 41 of age, then You are born 1970. Tallulah died 1968-12-12. How did You manage do see the real living Tallulah? Are You a time-traveller ??? May I hitch up on Your next time travel to a Tallulah-performance to see her to ?
@SpaceCowboy641 , wow! All I said was that I had seen the real Tallulah before. Nowhere did I say I had ever seen Tallulah Bankhead LIVE and in person. Geesh, that's quite a leap! I've seen the real Tallulah many times on TV and in movies, understand? You're a certifiable idiot.
After Kathleen Turner's HORRID turn as Tallulah (which was more like spending an evening with Elizabeth Ashley), i didn't think anyone could do ANY WORSE of a job acting as Tallulah Bankhead......and then Rhoda came along and proved that she could indeed be THE WORST imitation of Tallulah Bankhead that has EVER been done.....i CRINGE every time i see it! Thank Ye Gods and little fishes that i've been spared this "theatrical experience"
I saw this today on Broadway and Valerie was magnificent. The clip above is a little over the top, but she has modified her performance for Brpadway and she and the play were great. I am now watching Tallulah on Lucy.
There is no doubt that any number of people will find this"awful" I think it was right on the money. Valerie's Tallulah is larger than life and this brief clip showed me that Harper knows her stuff.
sorry....this is just the awfullest characterization of Tallulah I have ever seen... I'm embarrassed for poor Valerie. I mean.... maybe this is Tallulah on crack?
Oh, no. That was awful. I love Valerie Harper. She's a terrific performer, a total pro. I hope she wises up and backs out of this mess before it hits NYC. Tallulah eluded Tovah and she eluded Kathleen Turner. Before either of them, she eluded Helen Gallagher, too. Just leave her alone. Don't go there. Oh, Valerie... you in danger, girl!
George bush can't play Adam Lambert. Valerie Harper (who is anti-porn) can't play the pro sex Tallulah Bankhead. How ironic that she presents this negative image of a woman, great actress- something Ms. Harper is not. Rhoda was her high point. Yes, Miss Bankhead took drugs but she was so much more than that. Who will remember Harper 40 years after she is gone?
I grew up watching valerie harper on TV, just recently I had the good fortune of meeting her at a performance of this play in pasdena, ca. My acting coach John Angelo taught her career early in her career, when he introduce me to her she was very nice and told me good luck with my career. I will never forget it, the woman I grew up watching, I love Hollywood.
Bravo!!! A brilliant and subtle performance! When you're playing such a larger than life character it's all about the subtleties and she really hits the mark. Wonderful!!
Aww Iris ! You're so sweet! I didn't know you wrote these messages.
Yeah Valerie, love your stuff, you are a hilarious Tallulah. If you were wondering who the hell was the loudest laugher at the June 13th performance, it was definately me :) Thanks for your comps on my Tallu drawing :)
Oh, I was priveleged to see Looped at the Pasadena Playhouse several years ago, and Ms. Harper was Fabulous Dahhhling!!!!

They should have gotten a gay man for the part. Valerie Harper was great as Rhoda on MTM. She's out of her league in this.

That's a pretty lousy impersonation of a great actress and personality. Glad I didn't have to pay to watch it.
