  • I have an ASUS laptop. I bought a WD black edition HD a few months ago. It does the same thing :( The funny thing is: I have Windows 7 and Linux Mint installed on i, and the beeps only come up when i use windows, i never got beeps under linux :((( It comes up after a few minutes the boot and goes away for an hour then comes back again.

  • Ever tried using a computer the right way up?

  • my bfs macbook pro is doing the same thing! same exact sound. we dont know what to do. the apple store is closed and so is apple car :[ someone HELLLP. what can i do? and what caused this?

  • my asus running vista does the same thing, but also makes a sound like the hd is grinding

  • i got exactly same problem!!! Here I upgrade the HDD myself. Should I call Seagate to ask for new drive?

  • @jackdecemberdk I hope you didn't do a self upgrade while the computer was still under warranty! :/

  • Mine also started doing this today I'm pretty pissed off after the crackling and distorted ausio problem with USB soundcards now this Apple needs to sort this out ....

  • Mine does the same dang thing!

  • seagate 7.2kRPM 2.5" HDDs do this on spindown , even the external ones...

  • My Macbook Pro 15" Early 2008 with Seagate 7200.4 500 GB is doing the same - but not very often (maybe once a day). I even deactivated the sudden motion sensor of the macbook pro but it didn't help.

So, is this a problem? Could this mean data loss?

  • @Lextarius If it's just an occasional click or beep, it's not a problem. Any hard drive will make similar sounds. You only need to worry if the sound is constant or if you hear grinding sounds.

I would suggest, however, that you not disable the sudden motion sensor. That's what moves the hard drive head to the safe zone when you move the computer so that it doesn't accidentally crash down on the disk. THAT would mean data loss.

  • is it really necessary to have this video upsidedown?

  • I have same problem with my MacBook (13", ~2 years old) and Seagate 250GB 7200RPM HDD P/N ST9250421ASG

  • thats not apples fault

  • Yeah it is apple's fault, fanboy.

  • No its not, its HIS FAULT

  • OK, but tell me, why not?

  • Tell me again, why are you filming this up-side-down?

  • I guess the mic on his camera is on the top side so he had to hold it upside down in order to record the sound efficiently

  • Sounds reasonable.

  • holding it normally, my fingers kept getting in the way of the lens. C'est la vie. Had to scramble to get some footage of it, as it's so random in occurrence.

  • Same here. It's really annoying. Same specs as above.

  • Mine is doing this also but less frequently. Macbook Pro Unibody 17" 3.06Ghz, 500Gb 7200Rpm Hdd...... Any cause for concern?
