Can someone answer this question for me. We are taught to grab inside the number in Pop warner and now highschool. In Professional football, I usually see them not grabbing inside the numbers, just punch and block with forearms(thats wat my uncle taught me). Even in such video games like APF 2k8, on pass blocking they are pushing you, no grabbing. Is there separate rules for blocking?
Punch blocking is used for pass blocking. Technique is to have a wide base and pop the oponnets numbers step back regroup and punch again. You do this so the defender does not get to you body to do a move on you.
On running plays you can fire out and punch, I teach thumbs up. Not suppose to hold but thumbs up you can grab the shoulder pads were the straps clip on control your defender. Just let go if your arms get extended.
@eagletistic i get it now, i was asking like when pass blocking. they don't teach us to punch at my school. and if so with other schools i would of had the county record for most sack in a season, but the opposing blockers step back and hold in the shoulder pads
I have a question I am 12 and i am 100 ibs and i play for a team of midgets. My question is do you have to be fat or big to play OL or you just have to be strong?. I aint that big but i am really strong. Would this position workout for me?
@bea27997 I had that same question I'm undersized but I have a good technique and a lot of power but I play D-Tackle,Defensive Guard, and D-End and I can play all offensive lineman positions including TE. So if have the right technique, strength, and a lot of heart then you can play OL. By the way 75% of my team weighs at least 15-25 lbs more than me.
Reach block: first step to the reach side (6" power step) at this point there will be a collision (As Coach says, yes the face and the hands). The second step in a reach block is a 6-12" step to split the D-lineman's legs (I teach my guys that they are trying to knee the other guy in the nuts) they will never actually do this but it gets their leg and foot in the right place. At this point; in position for the 3rd step, the foot that made the initial 6" power step swings and seals the DL.
@LBFootballCoach When i learned this stuff i started to learn it this year im a freshman we where always told to block with our forearms because they dont like the Punch and grab but like CHG says and my Dad Punch dont block old school. But i seem to always get called from holding when i reach block but i grab the inner part of there shoulderpads where there numbers are so any tip so i dont get called for this
just because everyone is teaching zone blocking or using your hands to block does not mean it is the best way to teach. Especially a 10 year old. Look at a 9 or 10 year old stance. He looks like a frog. No way you can teach zone blocking to a 9 year old.
i dont know if you want to teach peewee players this, but the fold block works well on run plays when the tackle or end is on the inside shoulder of the offesive tackle.
(the tackle blocks down while the gaurd pulls behind the tackle and goes up field on a backer....but this requires a decent gaurd to block the backer)
You know ... from personal experience those are fairly heavy... hes just tossing it around heh don't think hes lying about what he's talking about but just remember that you can't bully them like he could and you WILL have some resistance
im about 5'9 and 163 pounds...my coach has me on line but i think just about everytime i play i might get ran over...im new to playing football and im a junior....today in football camp i had a guy the outweighed me and keeps pushing me back..im close to cracking and coach yells at me every time someone gets through me...please help
The biggest thing is this - give as much of an effort as you can. If coaches see that you are giving 110% you will be in their good graces. Coach is most likely yelling at you to get through to you that you can block, and that you can take on that guy that's bigger than you.
I've had plenty of guys smaller than me block me - and I was a pretty decent player. Just stay low and drive your feet.
If you find yourself on your heels getting driven back, plant your feet and get lower. Keep in mind that's a last resort because once the feet stop they won't start moving again.
Hit the weight room hard, do some footwork drills and get lots of protein and you'll be alright. Hey, you made the team so be proud and keep your head up. Remember its just a game.
You sir, do not know the first THING about football or blocking. This video made me actually very sad. You couldn't be wronger on anything and everything you said. Please, PLEASE stay away from young people with this information. Please!
I am amazed that you would dare post this on the internet. Please take it down before someone listens to you.
To "slide your head" is what a monkey might try to teach someone.
To "swing you butt" towards the whole is an idiotic thing to coach. Fact. (Okay, just so you know... if your lineman is an actual real live sloth, you might need to tell him to put "his butt to the hole." Otherwise, teaching them to ACTUALLY block might be a good idea.
"down block" by "pushing" the guy to where the ball is.... priceless. This guy's mom must be his aunt, sister, grandma, and uncle!
OK,OK!!! Everyone calm down. ND, we are talking about 10 year olds here. Our main goal is for them to be physical. First, if your facemask is low and you punch with your hands the pads will follow. I don't know why you would not have them punch. 2nd, any time your back is to the ball (or hole) and your man is in front of you, you are in good shape, even if you cannot drive them out. 3rd, of course you down block away from the ball carrier, the idea is to cut off penetration.
"First, if your facemask is low and you punch with your hands the pads will follow."
You, as I said, could not be wronger. That is senseless. If your ten year olds have slinky's for arms, that might work. Otherwise, where your "hands go" you can be damn sure your pads will NEVER BE. Try it at home right now. Make sure you have 911 ready.
If your "back" is "to the hole" that means YOUR BUTT IS IN IT, AND THERE IS NO HOLE and the d lineman is in the backfield.
I never said lead with your hands! Search for Notre Dame Offensive Line and watch the first video, 1:45 maybe you will listen to him if you won't me. What they are doing is the EXACT Technique I teach, even if I did not explain it well here.
It is really unfourtunate that people today can not disagree, and argue different points of view, with out being ugly, calling names, and resorting to bitter fighting. I welcome feedback, and believe the discussion of different oppinions is healthy, and leads to better coaching, but can't we be nice?
Technically, the hands do not punch on the first step, it is the second. But, when teaching 10 year olds, that makes it too complicated. If you get them to block correctly, the hands will punch on step 2 but it feels like one move. I have coached a lot of kids, and have found that breaking it down this way is easiest. Also, the reason I teach the head slide to youngsters, is so they start with the drive on a reach, and if they get dominant position they can turn their man as they drive.
You can teach your kids whatever you want. But, God Blessed, do not post this on the internet as if you know something more than any completely average coach.
Your knowledge is basic at best, and at worst it is just plain wrong.
Quote: "Also, the reason I teach the head slide to youngsters, is so they start with the drive on a reach, and if they get dominant position they can turn their man as they drive. "
This is not right. It isn't. You are not an expert. Accept it and move on.
Look, you have no idea how to teach a "drive." You use that word and then say "turn."
In the span of a 4 second play, why don't you discuss your means of having the child assess his dominant or submissive position. The point is that what you teach is a) illogical and b) fundamentally terrible.
If you want to teach an actual drive block, let me know. Your coaching method can be summed up as "Let's hope the defender doesn't go here." And by "here" I mean "nowhere" because there's no hole.

This Technique might be a little too much for a 9-10 year old, unless they are mature enough to digest this info.

ALWAYS stay low and fire out. Give a good sternum punch and ALWAYS keep your feet moving. You will steer the defender all over the field.
