4th grade music class - 1971! Too funny! For some crazy reason, this popped into my head yesterday and I told my wife about it, but she has never heard of the song. You think she'd know it since she is from MI and I'm from CA...and Erie is one of the Great Lakes.
@mikeyt62 Well, the Erie Canal, like the Panama Canal, is manmade. Moreover, it's in New York state, as the song indicates. I'm not surprised your Gal From Kalamazoo (I'm kidding) never heard of it. :)
Now please pay close attention before going to the review below which has a typo on the date of which should really be tonight on 12/26/2008 that I learned about all of this local trivia of mine here online on this very You Tube site. This will make even more of an effort to give Natick the Next Town over from here in Framingham,Ma.along with Boston and vicinity itself to get even bigger and better recognition on the whole as well and please check out all of my reviews here and on The Imbd sites.
Not only am I moved by any version of this song since I 1st heard it in The 5th Grade but now tonight on 06/26/2008 to just find out that it was written in the next town over in from here in Framingham, where I've lived for 45 years,in Natick,Ma,where I lived for 6 months, after being born in Dorchester/Boston makes it even more moving for Nostalgia's sake and more proud to bear the memory of when I had first heard it just finding out that it was written in the next town over from Framingham.

A teacher used this song and other folk tunes to teach us US History in 4th grade. I've loved it every since. Thanks for posting.

I have heard a lot of good things about the Erie canal but never been there. I did go to the Finger Lakes and that was wonderful.

I live in Lockport NY. The Erie runs right through it.
