  • This would be the best version of the Hammerklavier, were it not that the third part will not play: a stupid notice comes up saying that it contains content from UMG (whatever that might be) and is therefore not available in my country (UK). Any way round that?

  • @geminian7846 UMG is Universal Music Group which owns this commercial recording. They, Sony, EMI, and Warner are on a warpath on YT postings. They've come after some of my postings - ironically though - only for the public domain 'live' broadcasts which they do NOT have property rights of. I've had to submit several refutations already...

  • @brtherjohn Thanks for the explanation, and commiserations! One would have more respect for the system if the copyright holders could get it right and not trample on all and sundry. I wonder why they only intercepted Part 3 of this recording and didn't go for them all.

  • Gilels rules!!

  • 6:08 BEETHOVEN SHOWS TO BE A PURE GENIUS!!

  • Thank you, Jaroosh. I have heard Gilels play superbly plenty of times, but not like this! Hammerklavier has secrets: if you find them, you have the queen of piano sonatas. I think Gilels found them.

  • This is a splendid rendition! Thanks for sharing!

  • Stunning !! That's my word for it. And a beautiful recording........If it is from Deutsche

    Grammophon it wouldn't surprise me.

  • .. forgot which 1 is harder , Hammerklavier or Waldstein... CAN ANY1 TELL ME WHICH 1 IS HARDER.

  • @DunNotCome Hammerklavier.

  • @DunNotCome come on! beethoven named his sonata 'hammerklavier' had his reason

    !

  • @DunNotCome depends...kinda

  • He has three orchestra in his piano!!!!!!!!

Marvelous, Fantastic, Magnificent, Almighty Musician, Gilels!

  • excellent clarity, though at the cost of a slower than usual tempo (and much slower than Beethoven's marked tempo iirc)

  • Superb! A religious experience!

  • Splendid! that is the only word to describe it.

  • Is this the recording famous recording from Deutsche Grammophon? thanks!

  • Op. 106 ("Hammerklavier") was dedicated to his friend and patron Archduke Ruldolph.

According to Carl Czerny, his pupil, Beethoven said: "Now I am writing a sonata which shall be my greatest"

Beethoven had told his pupil Ries:

"This sonata was written in oppressive circumstances. For it is hard to write for on's bread, that is the position I am in now"

Sometimes a genius is very maltreated.

I have the vynil album containing this sonata.

    Gilels - great rendition.

  • @ClassicalOJazz I thought ries was his distant lover

  • gilels is one of the most honest musicians ever, just try his schumann concerto out. what tone. what a conception and sense of structure. I would love to know where and when he recorded this, as I am familiar with his london performance in mid 80's.
